、 BSI ii BSI 1998 BS 1217 : 1997Issue 2, January 1998 | | Foreword This revision of this British Standard was prepared by Technical Committee B/524 and supersedes BS 1217 : 1986 which is withdrawn. Several innovations have been introduced, the primary one being the division of material and product re

、quirements. An equally important matter is the introduction of a choice in weathering test requirements by the inclusion of the capillary absorption test (CAT) as an alternative to the existing initial surface absorption test (ISAT), each test having a single specification limit. The reasoning behin

、d this is described in annex B (informative) which refers to the individual clauses. The following other principal changes have also been made. a) Slenderness ratio, being a design consideration, has been moved to annex C (informative) with accompanying figure. b) Due to there being insufficient dat

、a relating the rebound hardness number to product strength, the rebound hardness test has been withdrawn and guidance is given in annex B. Since cutting or drilling of samples from products is banned, this has resulted in there being no test specification for product strength, only cube strength. Th

、e Technical Committee hopes that future research, such as the DOE/PIT Dundee University project, will yield useful information enabling the Technical Committee to make up for this shortfall in a future revision. c) Drying shrinkage requirements have also been deleted and guidance may be obtained fro

、m BS 5628 : Part 3 concerning control joints. d) Reference is made in table B.1 to the two common methods of cast stone manufacture, namely the semi-dry mix design (also known as earth-moist) virtually instantly demoulded and the wet-cast mix design generally left in the mould overnight. No referenc

、e to these methods is made elsewhere in the standard. e) The Technical Committee is aware of the confusion in definitions and the overlap in BS 5642, BS 6457 and BS 6100 : Section 5.2 with this standard and action is being taken to clarify the situation. Compliance with a British Standard does not o

、 Annexes Annex A (normative) CATweathering Measure the visual test face of each product by suitable means and record the area of each in square millimetres to the nearest 10 mm2. Record as A1, A2, A3. At not less than 14 days old, dry the three products in a well ventilated oven or ovens at (705) C

、for at least 72 h and allow to cool to room temperature (15 to 25) C in an air-tight enclosure. Weigh and record the mass of each unit to the nearest gram on a balance, accurate to 0.5 g. Record as W1, W2, W3. Place each product, supported on suitable spacer devices, into a tray and fill with cold w

、ater so that the visual face under test is under a maintained (51) mm head of water. After (100.5) min, remove each product; remove excess water with a damp rag and within 30 s of the removal, reweigh and record the masses as above. Record as X1, X2, X3. Calculate the capillary absorption C1(in mg/mm2) to the nearest 0.1 mg/mm2: C1= 1000(X12 W1) A1 Similarly repeat the calculation for C2and C3 substituting the relevant values of X and W. Finally calculate the mean value C(in mg/mm2) as: C = C1+ C2+ C3 3 Annex B (informative) General notes for guidance
