、I 02-2000 ISBN 0 580 34379 0 Foreword This British Standard, which has been prepared under the authority of the Telecommunication Industry Standards Committee gives the specific rules for the preparation of detail specifications for lead-screw actuated pre-set potentiometers of assessed quality and

、should be read in conjunction with Section 2 of BS 9130 “Potentiometers of assessed quality: Generic data and methods of test”. It has been issued in the United Kingdom, where it is urgently required but if a similar procedure is adopted in other countries changes will be considered for the purposes

Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This

、s for drafting which, in conjunction with the general rules contained in Section 2 of BS 9130, are required for the preparation of detail specifications for wirewound and non-wirewound lead-screw actuated pre-set potentiometers of assessed quality. It also contains provision whereby an approved manu

、facturer may propose amendments to published detail specifications which have been prepared by a BSI Technical Committee. 2 Dimensions and outline drawings 2.1 The detail specification shall prescribe those dimensions which are suitable for gauging. These shall normally comprise the following: 1) Le

、ngth. 2) Height1). 3) Width1). 4) Fixing hole dimensions. 5) Location of terminations. 6) Position and dimensions of actuator. 2.2 The detail specification shall contain an appendix giving the drawing of the potentiometer with full detail dimensions and number of effective operating turns, where it

、is not feasible to give this information on the front cover. It shall also identify the normal mounting means. An approved manufacturer may seek approval of a lead-screw potentiometer which conforms to a detail specification prepared by the BSI committee but does not conform to any of the styles con

、tained in such a dimensional appendix. At the time of submission for qualification approval the manufacturer shall apply for a style-number to be given by BSI to his own drawing of the product. Such a submission shall comply with the provisions of 2.2.1 below. Where qualification approval is granted

、 for this product the manufacturer shall issue an A4 size sheet showing his drawing with the style-number (including the BS number) to which qualification approval has been granted and his name and address. Copies of this sheet shall be made available in the same way as a manufacturers detail specif

、ication. 2.2.1 Any style to be included shall comply in every respect with the ratings and characteristics and inspection requirements of the published detail specification. Where a number of rated dissipations, constructions and climatic categories appear in the publication, the proposal shall iden

、tify: 1) Rated dissipation at 70 C. 2) Nature of the resistive element (i.e. wirewound or non-wirewound). 3) Climatic category. 4) Dimensional details. 5) Normal mounting means. In respect of 4) above, a detail drawing shall be given, which is fully dimensioned in accordance with the scheme shown in

、 Appendix A. This drawing shall be based on an existing dimensional outline. Those dimensions (and operating turns) which are different shall be identified. 2.3 Where, for technical or editorial convenience, a number of detail specifications are published together as a single document, e.g. BS 9131

、N001 to N016, that document will include a selection chart identifying the dimensional outlines available within each detail specification. An approved manufacturer may propose for inclusion in that chart a combination of dimensional outline and detail specification number (i.e a style) which was no

、t previously available. Only those dimensional outlines already referred to in the chart are available for this purpose. The acceptance of such a proposal is subject to the submission by the manufacturer of authenticated test results, and full information in respect of the proposed style. 3 Ratings

Test B: 1

、00 to 155 C. Test C: 04 to 56 days. Values selected within these ranges shall be chosen from the relevant tests of BS 2011-2. The severities for the cold and dry heat tests are the lower and upper category temperatures respectively. For some potentiometers, these temperatures will occur between two

、of the preferred temperatures given in BS 2011-2. In this case, the nearest preferred temperature within the category temperature range of the potentiometer shall be chosen for this severity. 3.7 Preferred severities for environmental tests shall be selected from those given in 1.1.12.7 of BS 9130.

、3.8 Standard values of temperature characteristic of resistance over the range 20 C to 70 C selected from the list in 1.1.12 8) of BS 9130 are as follows. (Equivalent temperature coefficients of resistance are shown in parentheses). 3.9 A statement of derating or a derating curve shall be given whic

、h shall be as shown in 2.1.5.2 of BS 9130. 3.10 The number of effective operating turns shall be stated in the detail specification and shall preferably be selected from the following nominal values: 12, 15, 20, 22 and 25. 4 Drying When drying is required the detail specification shall call for Proc

、edure I of 1.2.4.1 of BS 9130. 5 Additional terminology The detail specification shall include the following terms: 5.1 Lead-screw actuated potentiometers. Those potentiometers which have a multi-turn actuating device which is insulated from the moving contact and from the resistance element. 5.2 Ef

、fective operating turns. The number of turns which are required on the actuating device to move the moving contact across the resistance element between the points at which terminal resistance is measured. 5.3 Slipping clutch. That form of construction which allows continuous rotation of the actuati

、ng device after the moving contact has reached either end of the resistance element. 6 Ordering information The detail specification shall require that the information listed in 1.1.15 of BS 9130 shall be given when potentiometers conforming to the specification are ordered. 7 Inspection requirement
