、TRUMENTATION INSTALLED RADIATION MONITORS FOR THE DETECTION OF RADIOACTIVE AND SPECIAL NUCLEAR MATERIALS AT NATIONAL BORDERS 1 Scope and object The scope of this International Standard is to define the performance of installed monitors used for the detection of gamma and neutron radiation emitters c

、ontained in objects/ containers or vehicles, general characteristics, mechanical characteristics, environmental requirements, test procedures and documentation. This standard is applicable to installed monitors designed to detect special nuclear and other radioactive materials by their emitted gamma

、 and/or neutron radiation. They are used to monitor vehicles, cargo containers, people, or packages and are typically located at national and international borders, but may be used at any location where there is a need for this type of monitoring. This standard does not apply to hand-held monitors.

、Information regarding the detection of special nuclear material (SNM) is contained in Annex A. This standard provides the purchaser with information that may be used to determine the performance of the monitor in detecting the presence of radioactive sources. This standard does not provide the data

、needed to determine the performance of the monitor in measuring the quantity of the radioactive material. In this standard, the term radioactive material includes both special nuclear and radioactive material unless otherwise specifically noted. The radioactive material may be transported by vehicle

、, carried by person, or concealed in a cargo container or in a package moved by conveyor belt, such as international mail parcels. Conformance with the requirements of this standard does not guarantee that a radioactive source will always be discovered. The selection of the location and the configur

、ation of the monitoring system on each site needs to be optimised to achieve the best performance, however, this is outside the scope of this standard. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are relevant to the application of this document. 39、ementary information on certain characteristics of the assemblies 4 General characteristics 4.1 Overview Monitors addressed by this standard are designed to detect radiation from gamma and/or neutron emitters contained in objects, containers, or vehicles, or carried by a pedestrian. They issue a vis

、ual and/or audible alarm when the signal from the detection system exceeds an alarm threshold. Measurement occurs when the object passes through the detection zone (dynamic mode) or is placed for some period of time within the detection zone (static mode). Alarms are activated when the measured gamm

、a or neutron emissions are statistically greater than the photon and/or neutron count rate detected in the absence of radioactive material. According to their use, monitors are classified as pedestrian, road vehicle, rail vehicle, conveyor. If a monitor is designed for use in two or more classificat

、ions, its associated detection zone shall be appropriate for each classification. The detection zone shall be equivalent in width to the width of the entire detector assembly. The height shall be as required for its specific use and is described in the following subclauses. For example, if the detec

、tor assembly for a pedestrian monitor is 1 m wide by 2 m high, the detection zone will be 1 m wide and from 0,1 m to 2 m from the floor or ground surface. 4.2 Pedestrian Pedestrian monitors shall provide a detection zone to ensure that people are monitored properly. As a minimum, the height of the d

、etection zone shall be from 0,1 m to 2 m from the base surface. The width shall be based on the width of the detection assembly. Monitors may use a single detection assembly (single-sided) or multiple opposing detection assemblies (two-sided). The maximum distance of the detection zone shall be no m

、ore than 1 m from the surface of the detection assembly for single-sided monitors. The detection zone of two-sided monitors is located between the detection assemblies. For evaluation purposes, the distance between each opposing detection assembly is 1 m. For dynamic monitors, the passage speed shal

、l not exceed 1,2 m/s. 7 BS IEC 62244:2006 Licensed Copy: London South Bank University, London South Bank University, Thu Mar 01 06:42:14 GMT+00:00 2007, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI 4.3 Road vehicles (includes road transported containers) Road vehicle monitors shall provide a detection zone that ensur

、es that the entire vehicle is monitored during passage. The monitoring system should be two-sided. Single-side monitors are discouraged. The detection zone of two-sided monitors is located between the detection assemblies, which should not be greater than 5 m apart. The height of the detection zone

、shall be from 0,2 m to 4,5 m from the base surface. For dynamic monitors, the passage speed shall not exceed 8 km/h. NOTE The height of the detection zone may be changed on the basis of national requirements. 4.4 Rail vehicles (includes rail transported containers) Rail vehicle monitors shall be two

、-sided. The detection zone shall be located between the opposing detection assemblies, which should not be more than 6 m apart. The height of the detection zone shall be from 0,3 m (from the rail) to 6 m. For dynamic monitors, the passage speed shall not exceed 8 km/h. NOTE The height of the detection zone may be changed on the basis of national requirements. 4.5 Conveyor Conveyor monitors shall provide a detec
