、ator chambers and for stop valves and sluice valves on service pipes and water mains. The largest size of surface box covered by this Part has a designated minimum clear opening of 300 mm in diameter. A summary of optional items to be agreed between the manufacturer and the purchaser is given in App

、endix B. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on page 10. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Part of BS 5834 the following definitions apply. 2.1 surface box an assembly of a frame and cover to give access to a valve or regulator chamber 2.2 frame a part of

、a surface box which receives and supports the cover 2.3 cover a part of a surface box which covers the access opening and which is constructed in one or two sections 2.4 composite unit a cover and frame set in a concrete surround and suitable for bedding on a sectional-type guard as described in Par

、t 1 of this standard NOTEA cast iron surface box complying with the requirements of a grade A box, and subsequently surrounded by concrete, does not constitute a composite unit. 2.5 clear opening the access opening in the surface box through which a horizontal disc of a diameter equal to the specifi

、ed minimum clear opening will pass unimpeded, without deviation from a vertical axis, when the surface box is placed in its normal position and with the cover fully open 3 Materials 3.1 Surface boxes 3.1.1 General. The materials used for the manufacture of surface boxes shall comply with the require

、ments of 3.1.2, 3.1.3, 3.1.4 or 3.1.5. The cover and the frame shall be of the same material, i.e. all cast iron, all aluminium or all plastics. 3.1.2 Cast iron units. The metal used for the manufacture of iron castings shall be either: a) grey iron (flake graphite iron) of a quality not less than t

The materials used for the manufacture of plastics surface boxes included in this standard shall

、 be either: a) thermoplastics; or b) thermosetting materials. NOTEIt should be noted that plastics materials may be adversely affected by heat, and care should be taken to avoid contact with hot materials e.g. hot rolled asphalt or mastic asphalt. 3.1.4.2 Thermoplastics materials. Thermoplastics mat

、erials used for the manufacture of surface boxes shall have a Vicat softening point of not less than 100 C when tested by Method 120A of BS 2782-1. It is permissible for thermoplastics to be reinforced or unreinforced or to be filled or unfilled. Thermoplastics shall be coloured black by the incorpo

、ration of between 1.5 % and 2.5 % by mass of finely dispersed carbon black. If colour coding of the lid is required for identification purposes, this shall be achieved by use of a coloured plastics insert. 3.1.4.3 Thermosetting materials. Thermosetting materials used for the manufacture of surface b

、oxes shall be glass fibre reinforced polyester moulding compounds complying with BS 5734-3 or BS 5734-5. Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Mon Dec 04 16:22:25 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 5834-2:1983 2 BSI 01-1999 3.1.5 Composite units 3.1.5.1 General. The materials used f

、or the manufacture of cover and frame shall comply with the requirements of 3.1.2, 3.1.3 or 3.1.4. The materials used for the concrete surround shall comply with the requirements of 3.1.5.2 to 3.1.5.5. 3.1.5.2 Cement. The cement used in manufacture shall be Portland cement (ordinary or rapid-hardeni

、ng) complying with BS 12, Portland blastfurnace cement complying with BS 146-2 or sulphate-resisting Portland cement complying with BS 4027. The same type of cement shall be used throughout. NOTEIf sulphate-resisting cement is specifically required because of the ground conditions in which the guard

、s are to be used, then the purchaser should specify this in the enquiry and/or order. 3.1.5.3 Minimum cement content. The cement content of the compacted concrete shall be not less than 400 kg/m3 (see also 5.3.2). 3.1.5.4 Aggregate. The aggregates shall comply with BS 882, BS 1201 except that the si

、ze shall not exceed 6.3 mm. 3.1.5.5 Admixtures. The composition and use of admixtures, if required, shall follow the recommendations of CP 110-1. 3.2 Fasteners. Fasteners supplied for loosely coupling separate sections of covers shall be of steel or ductile iron and shall have cross sections of not

、less than 28 mm2 for 100 mm and 135 mm boxes, 50 mm2 for 225 mm boxes and 78 mm2 for 300 mm boxes. If bolts or studs complying with BS 4190 or BS 4439 respectively are used, they shall be not less than M6, M8, M10 and M10 for surface boxes having clear openings of 100 mm, 135 mm, 225 mm and 300 mm r

、espectively. 3.3 Hinge pins. Hinge pins shall be made from steel, ductile iron, plastics or non-ferrous metals, as selected by the manufacturer to suit the design and dimensions of the unit but plastics hinge pins shall only be used in conjunction with plastics surface boxes. Hinge pins made from st

、ainless steel and non-ferrous metals shall be not less than 4 mm in diameter. Hinge pins made from ferrous metals other than stainless steel and hinge pins made from plastics shall be not less than 6 mm in diameter. Hinged units shall be capable of supporting the specified design loads without the h

、inge pins forming part of the loadbearing surface. 3.4 Swivel pins. Swivel pins shall be made from steel, ductile iron or non-ferrous metals as selected by the manufacturer, and securely anchored to the cover, and captive to the frame. The pins shall have a minimum diameter of 12 mm and shall be of

、suitable length to allow the cover to be lifted and swivelled. 4 Design features 4.1 Shape and size. The minimum clear-opening sizes shall be as given in Table 1. NOTE 1The shape, e.g. square, rectangular, circular, and the actual size are the product of the individual manufacturers design. NOTE 2If

、 the purchaser desires to specify a particular shape, this should be stated on the enquiry and/or order. Frame dimensions for composite units shall be as specified in 4.10. 4.2 Displacement by traffic. The design of covers shall be such that they shall not be displaced by normal traffic. 4.3 Drainag

At least one prising slot per cover-element shall be provided for the purpose of opening hinged covers and for initially loosening removable covers.

、4.5 Keyways. Covers that are not hinged shall incorporate one keyway per cover-element as shown in Figure 2, for lifting purposes. NOTEThe purchaser should specify in his enquiry and/or order if open or closed keyways are required. 4.6 Clearance. The maximum clearance between cover and frame shall b

、e 3 mm all round, with a permitted further clearance between cover sections of up to 3 mm. 4.7 Coupling of cover sections. Cover sections shall be loosely coupled; fasteners shall be provided with means to prevent tightening together of the cover sections (see 3.2). 4.8 Metal detection component for

、 plastics units Plastics units shall be provided with a corrosion-resistant or suitably protected metal component moulded into or permanently fixed to the underside of the cover to facilitate detection using an electronic surface-box finder. The metal of the component shall have a minimum plan area

、of 5 000 mm2 and a minimum thickness of 1 mm.
