For Preliminary Review Only: Addition of the Requirements for Double Bottom Tanks (UL 80 - PR4482) Proposal Presented as Submitted by STP 80 Working Group 1 - Double Bottom Tanks RATIONALE This concept was accepted at the last STP 80 meeting. However

、, additional details were needed and therefore Working Group 1 was formed to address them. One concept that was discussed in detail in the working group was how much area the second bottom should contain on the bottom of the tank. Granby Steel Tanks conducted an autopsy study that showed that 88% of

、 the leaks on an obround tank occurred on the bottom of the tank within two inches of the centerline. An additional 7% of leaks would be contained if the lower two inches of the head are also double contained. Therefore the working group determined that double containment of the head should be optio

、nal, as the greatest additional level of safety is obtained simply by double containing the very bottom of the tank. Project Managers Note:To facilitate review, proposals requested under this topic (PR4482) to revise Sections 11 and 12 of the Standard have been merged into Topic 2 of this proposal.

、Proposals requested under this topic (PR4482) to revise Section 16 of the Standard have been merged into proposed Section 16A in Topic 1 of this proposal. Finally, proposals requested under this topic (PR4482) to revise Section 18 of the Standard have been merged into proposed Section 18A in Topic 3

、 of this proposal. PROPOSAL 1.1.2 Each tank shall be permitted to be fabricated as a double bottom tank as covered in this Standard. 3.1.8.1 DOUBLE BOTTOM TANK A primary tank with an additional bottom capable of being pressurized and has means for monitoring for leaks in the interstitial space. 6.13 The additional bottom of double bottom
