、 Turning around, I started back, and a long time later was outside the house I had set off from. It was at about that time I realized that I had a gate key but no house key. Your reporter gave me a copy of his resume(简历 )and photocopies of six stories that he wrote for you. The headlines showed you played them proudly. With

Surprisingly, your reporter is not unhappy. In fact, he told me he really likes his job. He has a great assignment(分工 ), and

、 said you run a great paper. It would be easy for you to keep him, he said. He knows that the paper values him. He appreciates the responsibility youve given him, takes ownership of his profession, and enjoys his freedom. So why is he looking for a way out? He talked to me because he wants his edito

、rs to demand so much more of him. He wants to be pushed, challenged, coached to new heights. The reporter believes that good stories spring from good questions, but his editors usually ask how long the story will be, when it will be in, where it can play, and what the budget is. He longs for convers

He wants someone to get excited about what hes doing and to help him turn his story idea upside down and inside out, exploring the best ways to report it. He wants to be more valuable for your paper. Thats what you want for

、 him, too, isnt it? So your reporter has set me thinking. Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists everyoneis to work harder to make sure they get the help they are demanding to reach their potential. 31、es C Like dogs, sharks rely on a sharp sense of smell to track down food. But new research shows noses arent the only way that sharks detect smells: Their entire bodies, in fact, function as giant noses capable of even picking up the “shape”of a smell. Running down the sides of every shark are nerve

、- packed strips called side lines. Researchers know these sensitive structures can detect the faint movements sent by living things in water, but their ability to pick up the smell was previously unknown. Even more surprising, researchers said, is that side lines can detect the 3D“plumes”of smells s

、tructures looking like turbulence left behind after waving a hand through thick fog or steam. “Odor plumes are complex, dynamic, three-dimensional structures used by many animal species to locate food, mates and home sites ,” said Jelle Atema, a Boston University biologist and co-author of the study

、 detailed in an upcoming issue of the Journalof ExperimentalBiology . When prevented from using“odor plumes”information, the study shows, sharks are unable to find the source of an odor. To find this out, researchers did an experiment. They ran a stream of squid(鱿鱼 )odor through a circulating water

、tank and noted a sharks ability to find the sourcewith no eddies( 漩涡 )and plumes to track, the shark almost always failed. They then used the same setup, but added a brick behind the smell source, thereby mixing the flow of the squids smell and giving the shark more information to track it. Sure eno

、ugh, the shark got on much better in locating the “prey” Researchers also numbed(麻醉 )the lateral lines with a common antibiotic, producing a similarly disabling effect on the sharks hunting abilities. “The results are interesting for our understanding of animals navigation under water and for the de

、velopment of guidance of autonomous underwater vehicles ,” Atema said. 44What was the purpose of the experiment? AThey wanted to prove sharks are good at locating the prey. BThey wanted to prove sharks are unable to find the source of an odor without using “odor plumes”information. CThey wanted to p

、rove sharks have a better navigation ability under water. DThey wanted to prove sharks can detect the faint movements sent by living things in water. 45What part of body do dogs depend on to track down food? AMouths. BEyes. CTails. 39、source? ATo give the shark more time to track it. BTo give the shark less information to track it. CTo confuse the shark with too many different odors. DTo give the shark more information to track it. 47Which is the main idea of the passage? ASharks use noses to hunt food. BHow do animals navigate i

D (2010 浙江卷 ) My family and I lived across the street from Southway Park since I was four years old. Then just last year the city put a chain link fence around the park and

、started bulldozing(用推土机推平)the trees and grass to make way for a new apartment complex. When I saw the fence and bulldozers, I asked myself,“ Why dont they just leave it alone ?” Looking back, I think what sentenced the park to oblivion(被遗忘 )was the drought( 旱灾 )we had about four years ago. Up until

、then, Southway Park was a nice green park with plenty of trees and a public swimming pool. My friends and I rollerskated on the sidewalks, climbed the trees, and swam in the pool all the years I was growing up. The park was almost like my own yard. Then the summer I was fifteen the drought came and

、things changed. There had been almost no rain at all that year. The city stopped watering the park grass. Within a few weeks I found myself living across the street from a huge brown desert. Leaves fell off the park trees, and pretty soon the trees started dying, too. Next, the park swimming pool wa

、s closed. The city cut down on the work force that kept the park, and pretty soon it just got too ugly and dirty to enjoy anymore. As the drought lasted into the fall, the park got worse every month. The rubbish piled up or blew across the brown grass. Soon the only people in the park were beggars a

、nd other people down on their luck. People said drugs were being sold or traded there now. The park had gotten scary, and my mother told us kids not to go there anymore. The drought finally ended and things seemed to get back to normal, that is, everything but the park. It had gotten into such bad s

、hape that the city just let it stay that way. Then about six months ago I heard that the city was going to “redevelop”certain worn- out areas of the city. It turned out that the city had planned to get rid of the park, sell the land and let someone build rows of apartment buildings on it. The chain-

、link fencing and the bulldozers did their work. Now we live across the street from six rows of apartment buildings. Each of them is three units high and stretches a block in each direction. The neighborhood has changed without the park. The streets I used to play in are jammed with cars now. Things

、will never be the same again. Sometimes_I_wonder,_though,_what_changes_another_drought_would_make_in_the_way_things_are_today . 48How did the writer feel when he saw the fence and bulldozers? AScared. BConfused. Cupset. D Curious. 49Why was the writer told not to go to the park by his mother? AIt was being rebuilt. BIt was dangerous. CIt became crowded. DIt had turned into a desert. 50According to the writer, what eventually brought about the disappearance of the park? AThe drought.
