His most famous wri

2、tings areAlices Adventures in Wonderlandand its sequelThrough the Looking-Glass, as well as the poems “The Hunting of the Snark” and “Jabberwocky”, all examples of the genre ofliterary nonsense(荒唐文学).,He is noted for his facility atword play, logic, and fantasy, and there are societies in many parts

3、 of the world dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of his works and the investigation of his life.,Alices Adventures in Wonderland is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym(笔名) Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hol

4、e into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures.,A brief introduction,1.Descriptive modification,First of all, a lot of descriptive modification have been included in the story, such as “a white rabbit with pink eyes”, “in a languid(倦怠的), sleepy voice” and so on, which make t

5、he novel more concrete and visual.,2.Rhetorical devices,Personification: In this novel, a lot of peculiar, anthropomorphic(赋予人性的) creatures presented in the fantasy world, such as the talking rabbit, the smoking caterpillar(毛毛虫), the dancing lobsters(龙虾) and the like. Undoubtedly, the use of personi

6、fication make all these animals create a world filled with curiousness and naivety(纯真).,For example, in chapter 1, “Down the Rabbit-Hole”, in the midst of shrinking(收缩), Alice worries about what final size she will end up as, perhaps “going out altogether, like a candle”; this pondering reflects the

7、 concept of a limit. In chapter 7, Alice ponders what it means when the changing of seats around the circular table places them back at the beginning. This is an observation of addition on the ring of integers modulo.,3.Since Carroll was a mathematician at Christ Church, it has been suggested that t

8、here are many references and mathematical concepts in this story.,Also in chapter 7, “A Mad Tea-Party”, the March Hare(三月兔), the Hatter, and the Dormouse(睡鼠) give several examples in which the semantic value of a sentence A is not the same value of the converse of A (for example, “Why, you might jus

9、t as well say that I see what I eat is the same thing as I eat what I see!”); in logic and mathematics, this is discussing an inverse relationship(逆相关).,4.Symbolization Most of the books adventures may have been based on and influenced by people, situations and buildings in Oxford and at Christ Chur

10、ch, e.g., the “Rabbit Hole,” which symbolized the actual stairs in the back of the main hall in Christ Church.
