1、Beauty Will NeVer Gone With the Wind-The Spirit and Courage of ScarlettAbstract:Gone With the Wind is one of the most popular American novels in China. The extraordinary courage and great power that Searlett had owned encouraged generations of readers to face the violent competition brave-ly, and th
2、e deep aspiration of land inspired readers to strive for their dream forever: This thesis is aiming at analyzing the charaeteristios of writing to display the real value in litemtttre and in society.GONE WITH THE WIND was written by American woman writer, Maragaret Mitchell, which has introduced int
3、o China for about fifty years. Its appearance in China experienced special traits. Although it was welcomed by most readers, this world-wide novel was neglected for long time, when coming across the tradi-tional criticism, based on political practice and moral judge. This thesis is aiming at transce
4、nding the limitation of traditional criticism,exploring the artistic channing of the heroine, Searlett OHara, in the novel, so that we can have a comprehensive understanding of this figure. When we finish the novel after reading earefifily, we cant help praising the courage and courage of Sea,rlett
5、OHara, then we will question omselves, where does her courage come from? In my opinion, I divide my paper into two parts.1 Extraordinary courage in face of difficulty and re-alityThe figure and story were placed under the great historical background about 1860s around the Civil War in U.S.A.The sout
6、hem slavery and life style were destroyed completely. The southern capitalist grew dramatically after the war, which was re-placed by new order, new value concept and life style. Every class and every character were confronting with a choice during the course of disturbed world with violent change.
7、In slave-owners class, there were old group who were ready to sacrifice themselves to old times. There were three-K party members, and there were more people who were cynic and seeking no progress in tragedy.All these different opinions and choices showed the traits of corrup-tion, rigidity, stupidi
8、ty of backward classes and the destine fate that will be eliminated by history. Thats the situation in America,which is so-caned disturbed world that has produced the heroine of this great works.Being the daughter of owner of Tara plantation, Searlett OHara inherited her fathers thought and power, c
9、hose a way of seeking for survival and eager for development. The cruel war end-ed the idle and casual life of Sea/lett, which threw her into hellsuddenly. Luckily surviving the fire of Atlanta, she had fiothing but her great spirit, and she faced the hungry of physical and the threatening of life a
10、nd then the living competition and choice be-tween good and bad. Confronting with the completely strange and extremely cruel living surroundings, young Scarlett developed her own living space with the attitude of all the people are disturbed except me, and strong will of to be the unique in the worl
11、d bravely. When the other people cried for the downfall the old times, she always said to herself in calmness:I will never look back the past days. Because who can move forward burdening with sorrowfifi memory. In her deep heart, she even has the spe-cial relaxation and fantasy escaping from the res
12、triction of traditional regulation. So she insisted on looking forward. She actually did what she had said. She always faced all the challenge of the reality directly. When she overcame all the unimaginable hardship to save Tara and herself from the damage of the war, all the admonition and moral in
13、struction mother had imbued into her were fallen off like the leaves in the wind of autumn. As for this, Scarlett looked it as this All the standards and value have been changed. So she herself has to change so as to adapt to this new world. There-fore, she could constantly adapted to her own time a
14、nd society with extraordinary courage to face all kinds of insult, threat and defeat from conservative power, with her special wisdom and arbitrary,with her amazing action which surprised and terrified all the world. In order to pay the tax of Tam, she acted as the younger sister of Butler so as to
15、borrow some money, however, she got insult from Butler. In spite of frustration, she tried her best to survive Tam from economic crisis. Being the oldest daughter in three sisters,OHara burdened all the duty to support tile whole family. The fate left her to burden all the obligations by herself. Wh
16、en she found:Money is the most important thing in tile world. She went to Tara immediately, going all herself out for the economical activities for urban money. She bought sawmill and operating shops, then com-peted with all the other businessmen. She became mindful with boldness, elasticity, practi
17、cality, and ambition, adapting to the principle and economic rule of tlmt society. At last, she defeated all the other rivals one by one, expanding her business continuously and increasing her capital rapidly. When all the slave-owner plant-ation of America have disrupted and the self-supplied mini-
18、agricul-tural economy began to collapse, Scarier stepped into newly-grown track of bourgeois economy and then became a earlier bourgeois in the south of America. It was her spirit and courage that have helped her stand firmly among all the slave-owners. To some extent, this is the spirit of .all the
19、 Americans, readers and audience love and sympatlfize Scarlett for decades, because there is a feeling of hometown, bnt Scarier is the perfect model of this feeling.2 The product of society and lifeUndoubtedly, Scarlett is the winner and heroine in such a dis-turbed society. People who are living in
20、 the modem society, having sense of crisis because of their own experience to various extent.This sense of crisis and strong eagerness for living and instinct of living made them accept and agree to Scarlett from the bottom of beart and mentally. We would rather say the success of Scarlett made read
21、ers excited, enlightened, thnilled and meditated, than say the solely-owned living-straggling realization produce such things. The competition concept of life and the explored, progres-sive, modem realization that adapting to the tide of history. Spur the old and Upgrade tbe new generation, intendin
22、g to reform and progress coinciding with acceptable realization of all the readers.Readers hope to get anesthetic psychology of the enlightenment of modem life and psychological reflection of the society from litera-ture, which was satisfied from Scarlet to some extent. When we look back on our life
23、, we cant help praising the bravery, courage and wisdom of Scarlett. To certain extent, she is the symbol of will, strength and beauty, which encouraged thousands of people to achieve their goal and realize their dream on the way to success.That s the intonation of the book, which displays philosoph
24、y of living through all ones life, that is, we will never be subjective to the fate, but meet the challenge confidently. So I say she is a per-fect model of spirit. Even though she is not perfect in other ss-pects, especially when she often looked upon love as means and ig-nored those people who wer
25、e hurt by her ruthlessly. In contrast with her enemy of love, Scarlett was easily hated by others. However, the gentle Melenie, even her son and husband will never survived without the help of Scarlett. They were incapable of living in the crisis, including Scarletts younger sisters, who had beth lo
26、ve and hatred to Scarlett, couldnt escape from hungry after the war. Un-like them, Scarlett was like a bunch of burning rose in the war, re-kindling the light of life in Tera. Thats enough, this is rare beau-ty, a kind of peculiar beauty, which is the beauty ofsustaining the whole world, instead of
27、the gentle beauty of singing the carol.During the past years, Scarlett was excellent in being a grace-ful lady, but she grew up with the change of situation wisely.Those people who were more graceful, gentler, and more knowl-edgeable limn would have to live on her land, which is the best es-timation

The special proud of American spirit and the new sense provided to the civilization of the whole wold was just the beauty of Scarlett, the beauty of power that conquer savageness and temper, the beauty of power with wildness.
