3、 origin of spinning and weaving. Nature provides four main fibres: cotton, flax, wood and silk. Cotton, from the Arabic (qutun), is the most important vegetable fibre of civilization. It has been cultivated from time immemorial and many varieties have been developed from the original wild-growing pl

Wool, the most beautiful of textile fibres, has one great drawback: its attraction for destructive animal pests. F

If, however, you are of legal age, choose to drink, and can control your drinking, here is somethi

In large amounts, it makes dull the area of your brain that controls judgement and self-control. Losing these qual

Studies have proven that a combination of alcohol and anger is responsible for much of the wildly careless driving that causes fatal highway accid

The only scientific way to check how much alcohol can affect you is by blood alcohol concentration (BAC). A simple breath test will show your BAC. And if alcohol i

It was the first machine that could automatically carry out a long list of calculations, all in the proper o

27、rder. It used mechanical and electronic parts. In the years that followed, computers became much more complicated, much faster in operation, and were very widely used in science and in business. This came about for two main reasons. Firstly, scientists and engineers needed correct answers to importa

28、nt and complicated problems. Say a group of engineers were building a new type of rocket engine. An important question might be: How should each part be designed cheaply and efficiently? There are mathematical rules for calculating shapes, pressures, stresses and efficiency. Other questions might be

29、: Is our basic design a good one? or How much of the material do we need? Again there are mathematical rules which can be used to answer these questions. Mathematicians could write the equations for solving problems such as these. But the amount of calculation was too great for them to carry out. Th

30、e invention of the automatic computer enabled them to solve such complicated problems. The second main reason for the development of computers is found in the world of business. Any big business has enormous quantities of records to keep, and thousands of calculations to make every week. It has reco
