TERM REPORTSEnd of Term ReportStudents NameZhao XingSubjectEnglishTeacherMr. DickensZhao Xing has always been a hard-working pupil. However, he finds that studying English is very difficult. At the beginn

、ing of the term, he was struggling to keep up with his classmates. So I was very pleased that at the end of this term, Zhao Xing came top of his class. All areas have improved greatly. In his writing, his spelling and punctuation are much better. He is able to correct his own work and help correct o

、ther pupils. In speaking, he is much more confident. He can have English conversations with his friends and with me. He takes part in group work and he is not afraid to speak anymore. He is able to read and understand quite difficult texts much more easily. When I ask him questions in English, he sm

、iles and can answer them quickly. Zhao Xing should feel very positive about the progress he has made this term. If he continues like this, he will do very well indeed.End of Term ReportStudents NameSam SmithSubjectEnglishTeacherMrs. Black Sam is a popular member of the class. He is also very clever.

、 However, his results this term in English have been very disappointing. In his final writing exam, he made a lot of mistakes and came last in the class. He should try and check his writing more and concentrate on his spelling. When he is speaking, he should remember to speak more slowly and clearly

、. Sometimes, it is very difficult to understand what he is saying. He doesnt seem to listen carefully either. His knowledge of basic English grammar is poor. He needs to buy a good grammar book and study it every day. I realize that Sam is the youngest member of his class. He is an intelligent pupil

、 who could do well, if he tries harder.3. GHATTING ONLINEZhao Xing:Hi Sam. Hows it going? Its great to have an online pen friend. Im feeling great today. We got our end of term reports and my parents were so pleased. Ive never seen them smile so much. How about you?Sam:Hi Zhao Xing. Yes, its good to

、 hear from you. My report came today and Ive never seen my parents look so unhappy. I cant believe it.Zhao Xing:Im sorry to hear that. Do you remember the advice June gave me about setting up an English club? Well, I did! A group of us meet after school and talk about things that interest us. Often

、we just talk about films we have seen. Theres only one rule when we meet you must speak English! I enjoy meeting different people. Its really helped me to feel confident when I speak English in class. Why dont you try and do the same?Sam:Thats a really good idea, thanks. There are lots of people fro

、m different countries in my school. The trouble is, they stay in little groups and dont mix very well.Zhao Xing:It must be difficult for you. There must be things you can do outside school. I really like football, so Ive joined a football club. Its great because we do something we really enjoy and s

、peak English at the same time! And we get fit as well! How about trying the same?Sam:I cant play football but I can play the drums! Ive got a friend who can play the guitar. Another can play the piano. Maybe we could make a music group instead!Zhao Xing:Yes, great idea. Do it and let me know how you

、 get on. But make a rule for your music group. When you are together, you may only sing and speak in English!4. ENGLISH JUST GOT HARDER!Many teachers who teach English language in the USA and England HATE mobile phones! They hate text messages. English language and grammar are hard to learn. English

、 spelling is even harder- and people in the USA and England spell a lot of words differently. English spelling has rules. But it also has lots of words that break the rules. You have to learn each of these words. Now text messaging has made spelling even harder.Text messages have to fit onto a small

、 mobile phone screen. The job of text messages is to say as much as possible with as few letters as possible. It is a whole new language. Most teenagers do not use much punctuation. Here are some examples:“Ill see you later and well go shopping” becomes “C U ltr 2 shop”. “Come to the pub at 8 oclock

、” becomes “cum 2 pb 8”.Teachers do not mind “2” instead of “to”, “too” and “two” too much. The biggest problem is when students use text spelling in everyday writing. These include:cum=comealredi=alreadyamazn=amazingcoz=becauseenuf=enoughSee if you can work out what the following text words mean:may

Shes telling us all about London. Is Oxford like London? They are both cities in England, but I guess tha

、t doesnt mean they are like each other. She doesnt know much about Oxford, except that it has a famous university. Weve been e-mailing each other for a while, but you havent told me much about Oxford and I havent told you much about LA. Thats what we call Los Angeles. So I will tell you about Los An

、geles now. You can tell me about Oxford when you write back.LA is one of the biggest cities in California. There are about 10,000,000 people here. We learned in school last week that in 1900 there were only 100,000 people here. So it has grown fast. It is mostly sunny here. It gets very hot in the s

、ummer-up to 28C. It doesnt get much colder than 9C. In summer we often get a thick smog because of all the petrol fumes from the cars. The heat, the way the land lies and the way the wind blow all make it worse. Some people even wear masks on bad days because they dont want to breathe it in. Do you

、have smog in Oxford?Eric6. BEN IN OXFORDHi Eric,We dont have smog in Oxford. We get fog sometimes, but thats all. Oxford is much smaller than LA. We only have about 135,000 people. I looked up the 1900 population, it was about 57,000. So it is about twice as many people, not ten times as many, like

、LA! Oxford is much smaller than London - London has about 7,000,000 people. So that means that LA has more people than London. LA gets hotter than Oxford. We have colder winters too it can be -4C in winter.Im not surprised that your new student only knew about the university. It is famous because it

、 is one of the oldest universities in the country. The university dates from the 12th century. Now there are about 9,400 students in residence, of whom a third are women. The city of Oxford is popular with tourists because of the universitys many beautiful medieval buildings. There are more tourists

、 in Oxford than students, I should think. We get a lot of tourists, all year round. We also get a lot of young foreign students because there are a lot of language schools here. You can stand in the middle of Oxford, close your eyes, and hear accents from all over the world!Ben7. POSTCARDSDear Eric,

、Here is a postcard from Paris. We came here at half term for a holiday. We went to Disneyland. Id like to see the Disneyland in California one day. Im speaking French because Mum and Dad have forgotten the French they learned at school! Were going to up the Eiffel Tower late this afternoon because w

、ay. We will go to Disneyland and go on all the fast rides!Eric 8. THE FLYING SCOTSMANEric Liddell was known as the flying Scotsman because he ran so fast. 43、hinese, he was known as Li Airui(李爱锐). Eric lived in China until the age of five. After that his parents sent him to school in England. In 1920, Eric went to the University of Edinburgh to study science.Sports played a large part in his life and he became the fastest runner in Scotland. He was chose

、n to be part of Britains 1924 Olympic team. The games were in Paris. The 100-meter race was his best event, but it was to be held on a Sunday. Eric, a strong Christian, refused to run on Sundays because he believed that it should be a day of rest as the Bible teaches.Although many people told him to

、 run the race, he refused. Instead he started to train for other distances. At the Olympics he won a bronze medal in the 200-meter race and then a gold medal in the 400-meter race, setting a world record. This story is told in the award-winning 1981 movie Chariots of Fire. Though now famous in Scotl

、and, Eric still loved and remembered China. He wanted to go back to the country where he was born. In 1925, he went to China and worked as a middle school teacher in Tianjin. Then he went to Hebei Province to help the poor people there. After the Japanese invaded(入侵)China, Eric chose to stay. He want

、ed to help the sick and give hope to the Chinese people. In 1943, the Japanese sent him to a prison camp in Weifang. Even in the camp, he continued to help the old people. He also arranged games for the children, and taught them science. In 1945, Eric was very ill. He was given a chance to leave the camp but he refused. Instead he gave this chance to a pregnant woman.
