3、of injunjoe-and they are right to be afraid because injun joeis very quick with a knife.this story is very interesting and exciting.I believethatone of the factorsthatmakes a pieceof literatureor even a movie a masterpieceishow wellthe reader can relate to the story. This is definitely a book everyo

4、ne can relate to.TheAdventuresofTom Sawyer isa literarymasterpieces,writtenin1876 by the famous authorMarkTwain. Tom Sawyer is a mischievous young boy who livesin the small town on the Mississippi River called St.Petersburg. The story line is simple, the book readslikea biography or a memoir ofa sum

5、mer inTom Sawyerslife.Tom Sawyer seems to be the precursor of and thetemplate for misfit kids such as Dennis the Menace,Malcolm intheMiddle,and Calvinand Hobbs. What makesthisstorygreatisthatTom Sawyerrepresentseverything that is great about childhood. The book isfilled with Toms adventures playing

6、pirates and warwith his friend Joe Harper. Tom has a trusted friend,Huck Finn, who few of the adults approve of. The bookis filled with ideas of how the world works, such ashow piratesand robberswork, thatare so innocent,theycouldonlycome froma child.Itis a storyfilledwithaction,adventure,ingeniousi

7、deas,love,andschoolyard politics. The whole story is seemingly acomplicationof what people did or wish they did duringtheir childhood.The book is a little difficult to read at first. Personally, it takes me a little while to get used tothe 19th century dialect in the book. Other than referring to pe

8、rsons of African decent in derogatoryterms (which Im sure uses terms even young children already know), the book would be an enjoyable read for people of all ages. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to feel young again, if just for a few hundred pages.The Magic of Tom SawyerThe discover

9、y of Tom Sawyer in a Chinese textbookreally came as a shock for me. I ran across the report on this novel by a Grade Six boy when I was tutoring him English. The little boy had been required to write this report after the Chinese class. Young as he was,he had made severalremarkablecomments in hishom

10、eworkamong which was his advocate for Chinese students to have an adventure life as Tom had. However, at the endof hisbook reviewhe came to pityhimselfand his peersa little bit , saying that such a desire could hardlybe achieved, given the fact that they have lots ofhomework and examinationsto finis

11、hand in the meantimetheir parents won t allow them such a risk.As wellas shocked,I was in a sudden choke of shame.Ifmy memory worksproperly,itwas notuntilthesophomore year that I first read this book which wasunexpectedlygainedasatrophyintheFirstInterpretationContest.To make thingsworse, I skimmedan

12、d scanned this amazing novel, as a result of whichI could not figureout the rightsequence of the events,let alone a deep reflection on the theme. I felt thatIt took me quite some time to survive this shockas well as shame. And when I eventually get over it,another thing struck my mind-why did the co

13、mpliersincludeTomSawyer as a textinprimaryschooltextbook.Is itsimply becausethebook entertainsschoolchildrens curiosity, since it depicts life of someblackchildren?Or,isitan efforttoequipourchildren with some foreign literature since it is forthe moment the trend?Questions like such haunted mymind s

14、o much thatI feltitan obligationtorereadthebook in detail.The answersgraduallysurfaced themselvesas Iproceedthereadingand Ifoundmyselfon thecompilers side. The style of Mark Twain s writing as well asthepersonaltraitsof itsprotagonist,Tom Sawyer ,hascombined to create the magic of this adventure nov

15、el,and for short I will name it magic of Tom.Mark Twain s uniquelanguage fascinatedme inthefirst place. This novel features the frequent use oftheconversationalruleofBlackEnglish-Doublenegatives make a negative, which constantly remindedme thatthisis aboutblackAmericansand nothingelse.Mark Twainwasa

16、lsoskillfulwiththe emloymentofcontracted forms which is quite common in black oralEnglish.Thesetwotogethercreatesalifelikescenarios for Tom and the reader came to perceive Tomand his deeds through his identity both as a black anda child.I thinkthisis theveryreason thatMark Twainhas been elevated off

17、 other writers. He tells abouttruthand he tellsabout reallife.He involvesthelifeof black Americans into his book, and shows the worldthat everyone has a role to play on the stage ofhas.Huck has. And so do many others. No matter how manyscandlous charges were brought against him for thismatter,no one

18、 can deny his outstandingnessand uniqueperception.TomSawyer isofMark Twain stylein another aspect,that is the author s attention to the interactionbetweenhimandhisreaders.Differentfromotherwriters, Mark Twain bore in his mind to giving some ofhis own opinions on the events which would lead hisreader

19、sforbetterunderstanding.Thus thereaderwouldhardly forget where has the story comes to and whycertaineventswouldoccur.Readersseldomfindthemselves alone in the reading, but rather they haveMark forcompany, who would sharewiththem some humors.Well,it s hightime forme to elaborateabout theprotagonist,To

20、mSawyer.Thisisa extremelymischievous boy. In the eyes of his village folks, heis nothing but a trouble-maker. He fights and swearsandhatestogotochurch.EvenauntPolly,hisblood-kin, would not want him around in her house. Ibetmany a Chinese adultwould have no fondnessforsucha boy and if anything, try t

21、o keep him as far away aspossible from their own children.However, my readers, I would like to remind you inadvance that you should not judge a boy by his appearance, especially in the case of Tom. This little boy is not that simple as he is a wisdom in his mischievousness. To understand Tom, you ha

22、ve got to dig deeper. A reader myself, I have noticed 4 importanttraits of Tom that I believe has contributed to his magic.Firstly, Tom knows far too well how people think. Remember how Tom got Rodgers Ben paint the fence for him?When Ben teasedHi-yi! You re up a stump, aint you?, Tom gave no answer

23、.But ratherhesurveyedhislast touch with the eye of an artist, then he gave hisbrushanothergentlesweep and surveyedtheresult, asbefore. Tom swept his brush daintily back and forthstepped bach to note the effectadded a touch hereandthere critizedtheeffectagain.Thisconcentratedness and enjoyfulness on

24、the part of Tommade Ben water for the painting work. Yet he would notconfer THIS PRIVERLEGE to Ben so easily. He knew the mind-setof the boys -in order to get a man or a boy conveta thing,its only necessary to make thethingdifficulttoattain.Bearingthisinmind,thereisno doubtthathe could succeding

28、in cheating his peers.Not only the children but also the adult cannotsurvive Toms wisdom. Rememberhow our pirates returned from Jackson s island? There was a rustle in the gallery, which nobodynoticed; a moment later the church door creaked; theminister raised his streaming eyes the congregation ros

29、e and stared while the three dead boys came marching up the aisle (Chapter 18) Scaring and somewhat astonishing, right? Why didn t these boys returnearlier since they had been grief homesick and relieftheir families who had been repenting for the loss of them? Perhaps many adults may condemn them as

30、 being naughty and ungrateful.But,consideritfora moment and you willfindthatthisis again a strategyof Toms. A funeralis a solemnoccasion sybolizing the mortal end of a person. griefand prayinghas apparentlybeen the theme forAunt Pollyand the villegers. The sudden revival of the begonerswould surelym

31、akes them cherishthem allthe more. Undersuchcircumastances,Tom wouldsurelysavehimselfscoldness and punishment and by the way, elevate him to the-apple-of-the eye position for the moment. That would sound kind of ironic for the adults since theyhad been fooled with by these three boys. But sorry,he i

32、s Tom and you cannot readily prepare for it.Second, Tom s courage for starting an adventurelife. Rebelling seems to have been deeply rooted inAmericanliterature,and we can alsofindthisqualityin Tom. He hated Sunday school. He hated going to thechurchand beingtorturedby the miniser s preaching.He hat

33、ed being misunderstood by Aunt PollyHe hatedhis life in St. Petersburg. He had desperately wantedtobreakawayfrom theoldlifetogetherwithitstraditions,authorityandbeingrebellingisnotenough for an adventure career. He dares to confront all therisks(getlostoreven getkilled)ofthewould-belife.Third,the boy s abilitytomanage the personnel.To succeed a pirate career, Tom knew far better thathecannotmake itbeginwith,hehadtofindhispartner. See who he had included in this pirate

35、 group?It s Joe Harperand HuckleberryFin.WhydidTom chosethem and nobody else? The truth is as follows. Joe hadjustbeen whipped by hismotherfordrinkingsome creamwhile he had never tasted. He had firmly believed thatshe was tiredof him and wishedhim togo. Any childrenwant to be lovedand any denialoflo

36、vewouldbringthemsuffering.Defintely,Joe wants tobreakaway fromthissufferingand livinga piratelifeisa prettygood wayout. And Huck. 37、treasures, Tom gave hisopinion-It shidinmightypaticularplaces,somethimes on islands,sometimes inrottenchestsunderthe end of a limb of an old dead tree, just where theshadow falls at midnight, but most under the floor inhaunted huses.Tom alsogave his reasonswhy treasurescould be found in the hauntedh

38、ouses-Theymostalways put ina dead man when theyburya treasureundera tree, to look out for it. While reading this part,I had been wondering whether they could succeed. Thethingisthat they made it becauseInjunJoe reallyhadhid the treauresin thehauntedhouse.I couldn tgivethem a big round of applouse. A

39、nother case in point ishis adventure withBecky inthe cave.They had gotlostand were in a dire need to find the way out. See whatTom haddone-Hemade a smoke mark forfutureguidance and started upon their quest He took a kiteline from his pocket, tied it to a projection Howcalm and clever is our hero! I

40、think his backgroundknowledgeaboutadventurehas,toalargeextent,contributed to his success.At this point, the compilers intentions seemedcomletelycleartome. TomSawyer isintroducedtoChinaneither for fun nor for fashion only, it is an effortof our government to educate our children in a brandnew style.C

41、hinesechildrenhave longbeen consumed inthe textbooks and they as a whole lack the spirit ofexploring which is vital to their further study andcareer.TomSawyer,withitsirresistablemagic, servesas a guide to invoke the courage and ability to takeadventure in children. Mark Twain had it right when hesaid,Twentyyearsfromnowyouwillbemoredisappointed by the things that you didn t do than bythe ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines.
