1、教师的故事(A Teacher s Story)教师的故事there is a story many years ago of an eleme ntary teacher. her n ame was mrs. tho mpson. and as she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the childre n a lie. like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved

2、 them all the same. but that was imp ossible, because there in the front row, slu mped in his seat, was a little boy n amed teddy.mrs. tho mpson had watched teddy the year before and no ticed that he didn t play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he con sta ntly n eed

3、ed a bath. and teddy could be unpl easa nt.at the school where mrs. thompson taught, she was required to review each child s past records and she put teddy s off until last. however, whe n she reviewed his file, she was in for a surp rise.teddy s first grade teacher wrote,“teddy is a bright child wi

4、tha ready laugh. he does his work neatly and has good manners.he is a joy to be around. ” his second grade teacher wrote,“teddy is an excellentstude nt, well-liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a term inal ill ness and life at home must be a struggle.his third grade te

5、acher wrote,“ his mother s death has been hardon him. he tries to do his best but his father doesn t show muchinterest and his homelife will soon affect him if somesteps aren t taken. ” teddy s fourth grade teacher wrote, “teddy is withdrawn and doesn t show much interest in school. he doesn t have

6、many friends and sometimes sleeps in class. ”by now, mrs. tho mpson realized the p roblem and she was ashamed of herself. she felt eve n worse whe n her stude nts brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for teddy s. his present was clumsily wrapped in th

7、e heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. mrs. tho mpson took pains to open it in the middle of the other p rese nts. some of the childre n started to laugh when she found a rhin est one bracelet with some of the stones miss ing and a bottle that was one quarter full of perfume. she stifl

8、ed the children s laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the p erfume on her wrist.“mrsteddy stayed after school that day just long eno ugh to say, thompson, today you smelled just like mymomused to. ” after the children left she cried for at leas

9、t an that very day, she quit teaching reading, and writi ng, and arithmetic. in stead, she bega n to teach childre n.mrs. thompson paid particularattention to teddy. as she worked withhim, his mi nd seemed to e alive. the more she en couraged him, the faster he res pon ded. by the end of the year, t

10、eddy had bee one of the smartest childre n in the class and, des pite her lie that she would love all the childre n same, teddy became one of her“teacher s pets. ”a year later, she found a note un der her door, from teddy, telli ng her that she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole yea

11、rs went by before she got another note from teddy. he then wrote that he had fini shed high school, sec ond in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life.four years after that, she got ano ther letter, say ing that while things had been tough at times, he d stayed in

12、 school, had stuck with it, and would soon graduate from college with the highest of honors, he assured mrs. tho mpson that she was still the best and favorite teacher he ever had in his whole life.the n four more years p assed and yet ano ther letter came. this time he explained that after he got h

13、is bachelor s degree, he decided to goa little further. the letter explained that she was still the best and favorite teacher he ever had. but now his n ame was a little Ion ger. the letter was sig ned, theodore f. stoller,the story doesn t end there. you see, there was yet another letter that sprin

14、g. teddy said he d met this girl and was going to be married. he explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if mrs. thompson might agree to sit in the place at the wedding that was usually reserved for the mother of the groom.of course, mrs. thompson, did. and gues

15、s what? she wore that bracelet, the one with several rhinestones missing. and she madesure she was wearing the perfume that teddy remembered his mother wearing on their lastChristmas together.they hugged each other, and teddy whispered in mrs. thompson s ear, “ tha nk you, mrs. tho mpson, for believ
