2、opic 1. Your Learning Task Boys and girls , youll begin a new long march . In order to learn English well and to pass CET, Band 4 or Band 6 (英语四,六级) one or two years later youll have to work harder than ever .,Free Talk,Youll have no choice but to learn more than one thousand English words or expres

3、sions in each term within two years (5,000 words / 2 years) . In both junior and senior middle schools , you spent 6 years learning about two thousand English words and expressions (2,000 words /6 years) . Thats a great gap or difference between them. Time for your study in Class We have four classes each week and finish one unit in less than two weeks , while in middle school you had 6-8 classes each week . Part one (paras 1-2), An introduction :,Main idea : Baker as bored by everything associated with English course , including essay writing and Bakers first impression of his new “prim” English teacher . More in detail : In

13、Para 1 Bakers idea of becoming a writer took hold in his third year in high school . Until then , hed been bored by everything associated with English courses , including essay writing . In this way , Baker leaves us a suspense . On the one hand , he wanted to be a writer and the idea took hold . On

14、 the other hand he hated English course . Is it self-contradictory ? Why ?,In Para 2. Whats more , Bakers first impression of his third year English teacher . Mr. Fleagle was terrible ,not good . Therefore , he lost his confidence in his teacher and anticipated another cheerless year . Causes for th

29、Analysis Russell Baker is very good at selecting details (see Part IV Writing Strategy) to prove his point . For example ,in Para. 2 he creates an unfavorable image of Mr. Fleagle by describing his “form ,rigid and hopelessly out-of-date” eyeglasses ,hairstyle ,clothes ,jaw ,nose , and manner of spe

30、aking. Whats more ,Russell Baker employs repetition not only to make it easy for reader to follow what he is saying ,but also to impress them more deeply .For example ,in Para. 2,there are 9 prim s or primly s in as few as 3 sentences ! Thus readers will have in their mind a vivid picture of what Mr

31、. Fleagle looked like .,Another example of such repetition can be found in Para. 5. Count how many I wanted s there are in this paragraph (there re 5!). They help to emphasize Russell Baker s strong desire to write for himself . On the other hand , where this stylistic device is not justified ,Baker

32、 is also expert in avoiding repetition by employing synonymous words and phrases .
