2、Tai) is the third largest freshwater lake in China. Some 90 islets, large or small, plus the presence of many fleets of fishing junk boats add to its landscape, making it a remarkable spectacle.,About Taihu Lake,Besides the natural scenery of Taihu Lake, there are many ruins of historic sites, such

3、as the Grand Canal of the Sui Dynasty (581-618), the Islets in the lake along with the coastal places in the east, the north and the west both of which are the cradle land of the culture of Wuyue (this culture touches on traditions that flow from or refer to Jiangsu, Zhejiang and the southeast part

4、of Anhui Province today) and so on.,About Taihu Lake,The lake has to its credit a thriving fishing industry as well as its ornamental limestone rocks that is native to no other place. These are much favored as accessories used in decorating traditional Chinese gardens in China.,About Taihu Lake,Abou

It is very well worth a visit.,General Information,Wuxi is often called the “Pearl of Lake Tai Hu,“ and the best place to see the beauty of the lake is from the gardens of the Yuan Tou Zhu peninsula and its nearby islands. Yuan Tou Zhu literally means “the Head of the Dragon-Turtle,“ inspired

7、the way the peninsula dramatically juts out into the lake.,General Information,Yuan Tou Zhu has been visited and admired by poets, painters, and tourists for centuries. In almost every dynasty famous poets have left poems praising the areas striking natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere.,General In

8、formation,Although it has been a well known scenic spot for centuries, the area was first made into a garden in the late 19th century, and the narrow bridges and pavilions seen today date from this period.,General Information,Several successful Wuxi businessmen bought much of peninsula and turned it

9、 into their country estates, where they find relief from the stress of their work by admiring the natural landscape.,The pavilions, bridges, and small ponds of the lakeside gardens are designed to accentuate the beauty of the natural landscape, not create an artificial landscape as many traditional

10、Chinese gardens try to do, especially those in Suzhou.,General Information,While this takes advantage of such an exceptional setting, it is also the result of a difference in culture and attitude. Many other classical gardens were created by officials as a retreat from the outside world, with its st

11、resses and politics.,Their walled gardens were an attempt to create alternate natural environment as an escape from the outside world.,General Information,In contrast, Yuan Tou Zhu was laid out by successful merchants and businessmen with a more optimistic and confident outlook. They came to the sho

12、res of Tai Hu Lake for pleasure and relaxation, and to entertain friends, not to escape the demands of the outside world, and the design of the gardens reflects this different motivation.,General Information,The most beautiful part of Yuan Tou Zhu is at the tip of the peninsula. Rocky cliffs carved

13、with ancient calligraphy loom near small ponds teeming with lotus flowers and crossed by arching bridges, while balustraded causeways curve out into the lake.,General Information,One side of the peninsula faces the forested coastline, while on the other side the great lake stretches out into the dis

14、tance, its other shore far out of sight. This part of the garden is especially beautiful in spring, when the countless cherry trees planted here bloom,their pink and white blossoms contrasting beautifully with the blue water of the lake and the green hillsides behind.,General Information,The rest of

15、 the peninsula is laced with narrow trails leading through the woods and down to the coastline, passing pagodas and pavilions, small shrines and ancient calligraphy carved into weathered stone tablets.,General Information,The best way to experience the beauty of the lake is to take a boat out to one

16、 of the three small islands that lie off the shores of the peninsula. They are known as the “Islands of Immortals,“ since classical authors imagined that Daoist sages and nature spirits would be drawn to a place of such great natural beauty, and also separated from the human world by the lake.,Gener

17、al Information,Although the immortals arent frequent visitors today, their legends have inspired a range of scenic spots hidden beneath the islands trees.One of the most impressive is a giant bronze statue of Lao-tzu, its green patina blending with the surrounding forests.,General Information,Many o

19、Spring Bridge Ju Qu Sheng Jing Arch Inscription for Wuxis Tourism The Turtle Head,The Entrance Archway,Ok, ladies and gentlemen, here we come to the entrance to Yuan Tou Zhu, overhead on the archway is a board with five Chinese characters meaning: The most beautiful part of Taihu Lake, which was wri

20、tten by Guo Moruo, a famous Chinese writer in 1958. This archway actually was built in 1931.,The Entrance Archway,Before 1934 the only access to this place was by boat. On disembarking people would ask which way to take? This is expressed by the two inscriptions on top of the brick gate next to the

21、entrance archway , one at each side.,The Entrance Archway,Lishe means good water access or boat pier available; Wenjin means asking the way. (On the right, there is an arch which used to be a private dock, on the arch, there are four Chinese characters meaning “making inquiries and boat pier availab

22、le”. These words are taken from an article from a great Chinese poet in Wei and Jin Dynasty, Tao Yuanming. “The Story of Xanadu”,The Entrance Archway,It means that Yuan Tou Zhu is so beautiful that is like a Xanadu.,Hanwanxuan Screen Wall,Before entering the gate, you will see a screen wall just inf

23、ront of the entrance insides, which serves to prevent peole from seeing whats inside at first glance. This is a typical gardening art in China. All the traditional Chinese gardens do that way, while sometimes a Taihu stone can be used instead.,Hanwanxuan Screen Wall,The center of the screen wall is

24、decorated with “phoenix and peony pattern” which is supposed to bring all the visitors fortune and good luck.,Huan Wan Xuan Pavilion,Behind the screen wall is a semi-pavilion called “Hanwanxuan” means “containing every kind of natural beauty here” . This means after you enter the entrance, you will

25、have the chance to enjoy all the beauty in this garden.,Ever-Spring Bridge,A high-arched stone bridge together with its reflection in the lake forms a pleasing streamlined circle and sloping down from each end of the bridge is an elegant trail on both sides with cherry trees. Early April is the best

26、 time to visit here when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom.,The Cherry Dike,This period of dike is called cherry dike, for both sides of the dike are planted the cherry trees, which were introduced from Japan in 1930s. From the cherry dike, you can better enjoy the scenery around.,Ju Qu Sheng Ji

27、ng Arch,It is a decorative arch with four Chinese Characters read as “Ju Qu Sheng Jing” on top. “Ju Qu” is another name for Taihu lake, an archaic one. “Sheng Jing” means “Land of superb scenery”. The arch here serves to remind that we are approaching the wonderful scenery ahead.,On the other side o

28、f the arch, there are the words “Villa Acrossing the Cloud”,Facing the arch, stands a piece of grotesque rock with the name “Gu Yun Shi”, meaning “time honored clouds”. This is kind of Taihu stone is very important element for traditional Chinese garden. The Gu Yun Shi actually was the relic from th

29、e Yans villa.,Not far to the right, there is a four-character inscription on a stone “Dao Ci Wang Ji”, which conveys the ideas that people will get rid of all their worries when they really are attracted by the beautiful scenery. In Chinese “wang Ji” means holding oneself aloof from the world and re

30、fering a kind of state of mind.,Ou Hua Shen Chu,“Ou Hua Shen Chu” or “Where the Lotus Are Opulent”, as a scenic spot in the park, is composed by a lotus pond, an isle, a zigzag bridge, a square pavilion, Taihu stone rockery and classical buildings.,Ou Hua Shen Chu,It is said that when this sight was

31、 completed in 1931, many tried but failed to give it a proper name for it. A young construction worker came up saying “ I remember a line from lyric peom by Li Qingzhao which sounds like a dream. That is Contentedly exhausted late in the night, I casually rowed my boat into where the lotus flowers a

32、re opulent so why should we name it the Lotus Flower Opulent ?” Hence the name.,Ou Hua Shen Chu,So this period of words shows people who once lived here had a life full of coziness and freeness . They want to have a poetic life in their spirits.,常记西亭日暮, 沉醉不知归路, 兴尽晚回舟, 误如藕花深处, 争渡,争渡, 惊起一滩鸥鷺 宋李清照,Insc

33、ription for Wuxis Tourism,Okey, eight Chinese characters on the stone are the slogan of Wuxi city, or for those who want to be Wuxi. It tells people that Wuxi attract people with her wonderful scenery and sight around Taihu Lake, along the Grand Canal and at the Scend Best Spring under the Heaven-al

34、l being related to water-and that Wuxi sees to it that everyone who comes to Wuxi feels welcome.,You can understand the sentence like Wuxi if full of warmth and water, or “Wuxi-rivers, lakes and affection everywhere.” The other side of the rock is a song called”Love to tour Wuxi” composed by a Japan

36、ty when viewed from here”.,General Information,The lakes endless rippling water reminds one of the attractiveness of the sea. Among all the green hills and little islands on the lake that can be seen from here, a cluster of four isles are most eye-catching: they are set out like a giant tortoise per

37、ching on water.,General Information,Local people call it “tortoise hill”, whereas visitors would imagine themselves to have seen a fairy land.,The Light House,A 13-meter high tower is the only building on the Turtle Head. It was built as a light house in 1924 to celebrate the inauguration of a local

38、 steamer co. and has been regarded as the symbol of the scenic spot ever since. Actually as Yuan Tou Zhu is in the main sea-route, people also hope this can direct night navigation.,Yuan Tou Zhu Tablet,The front of the tablet is inscribled with three Chinese characters read as “Yuan Tou Zhu”, meanin

39、g “Turtle Head Penisula”, which is the name of the park. The calligrapher was a scholar from Wuxi named Qin Dunshi.,Yuan Tou Zhu Tablet,On the other side of the tablet are four Chinese characters written by Liu Chunlin, read as “Yuan Zhu Chun Tao”, meaning “Spring Billows at the Turtle Head”.,Yuan T

40、ou Zhu Tablet,Liu Chunlin once won the first place in the highest imperial examination in 1904 and obtained the title “Zhuang Yuan” or “Number One Scholar”. It was only in the next year 1905, that the imperial examination system was abolished, forver. Liu hence assumed himself, jokingly, to be the “

41、last of Chinas number ones” .,Han Xu Pavilion,The pavilion was built in 1981. “ Han” literally means “ contain” and “Xu” “void” or “ emptiness”. It is true to the fact that there is nothing in the pavilion except for the name board overhead with the two characters on and also, it it open on all side

Visitor would come in for a rest while enjoying the breathtaking view around.,Han Xu Pavilion,“ Pavilion” in Chinese is “Ting”, homophone for “ stop or “stay” in Chinese, so a pavilion is where people “ stop” or “ stay” for a while. Pavilion is also one of the essential parts composing a traditio

43、nal Chinese garden.,Inscriptions of Yuan Tou,Some distance away from here, two inscriptions on the face of a cliff are easy seen. One is “ Heng Yun” meaning “ clouds stretching across the sky or hanging up in the sky”. It is a description of the original prospect the Turtle Head Penisula presents wh

44、en viewed from far away on the lake.,Inscriptions of Yuan Tou,Liao Lun, the then magistrate of Wuxi County, witnessed the wonderful prospect when he took a boat-ride with his friends on the lake in the Spring Festival of 1891. They saw the Turtle Head Peninsula appearing like floating clouds stretch

45、ing across the sky and it was no other than(正是) where the blue sky and the green water met.,Inscriptions of Yuan Tou,In amazement he wrote “Heng Yun” as well as “Bao Yun Wu Yue” in the inspired moment, which literally means “ covering and conceiving the State of Wu and the State of Yue”. Lake Taihu

46、is bounded on the north by Jiangsu province and on the south by Zhejiang province and the two provinces belonged respectively to the State of Wu and the State of Yue in Chinas “Warring States Period” some 2500 years ago.,Inscriptions of Yuan Tou,Of all the inscriptins in the whole Lake Taihu scenic

47、area, the inscription “Bao Yun Wu Yue” is appraised as the most outstanding. It impresses one with the lakes imposing large sizeso vast that it goes across two states, with the important role the lake has played in thousands of yearsThe lake, like a mother, has been nurturing the great people as wel

48、l as the brilliant culture of Wu and Yue.,Inscriptions in historical sites and scenic spots and a great dea; tp the taste of those resorts. It is a cultural phenomenon originated in China.,The Bronze Statue of Turtle,The bronze turtle was a gift presented in 1985 to the First Lake Taihu Spring Art F

49、estival by Shanghai Bronze Culture Renaissance Co. 1.3m high, 1.7m long and weithing 700 kilo, it bears on its base four characters in Zhuanshu style: “Zhen Ze Shen Yuan” meaning the “ Divine Turtle of Lake Taihu”.,铜鼋,Ending Words,Taking a stroll starting from the “Turtle Head” to this “Bronze Statue of Turtle”, one may notice that the magnificent lake-view on the right is properly coordinated with the green hills on the left like a backdrop.
