、ellular solings. The test can also be used for solid and semi-expanded solings but in these cases may be of limited application owing to the tendency of the tear to run quickly to one surface giving misleading results. This can also occur, but to a lesser extent, with cellular solings. NOTESection 2

、.6 is based on SATRA1) Physical Test Method PM 65. 2 Reference This Section refers to the following standards publication: BS 5131, Methods of test for footwear and footwear materials Section 2.7: Preparation of soling test pieces (in course of preparation). 3 Principle A test piece is split for par

、t of its length parallel to the surface of the rubber so that the split is midway between the two surfaces. The two tabs so formed are pulled apart and the maximum force required to propagate the split as a tear is determined. 4 Apparatus The following apparatus is required. 4.1 A low-inertia type t

、ensile machine, preferably autographic, with a constant rate of traverse of 100 o 20 mm/min, a force range of 0 to 200 N and preferably higher and lower ranges also. 4.2 A splitting jig and knife to use for making the initial cuts. NOTEThe SATRA knife and jig STD 191 are suitable and are illustrated

、 diagrammatically in Figure 2.6/1. 5 Test pieces Cut rectangles each measuring 75 mm I 25 mm, three in the direction along the soles or sheet material and three at right angles to this from samples which have already been reduced to the standard testing thickness for cellular solings of 5.0 o 0.2 mm

、 by the procedure described in BS 5131-2.7. Using the splitting jig and knife, split one end of each test piece half-way between the top and bottom surfaces for a distance of approximately 15 mm. (The split should not be longer than 20 mm and the test is difficult if it is less than 12 mm.) Make sur

、e the split portion ends in a clean cut. This forms two tongues at the end and leaves a piece approximately 60 mm I 25 mm intact. Turn the test piece round and cut the other end in the same way so that two ends are split and the centre portion is not. Draw two lines across the test piece 12 mm beyon

、d the end of each split portion. A prepared test piece is then as shown in Figure 2.6/2. 6 Conditioning and testing atmosphere Condition the test material for at least 6 h at 20 o 2 pC after reducing it to the standard thickness and carry out the test in this atmosphere. The time interval between cu

、tting out the test pieces and testing is not critical. 7 Procedure 7.1 Select the force range most suitable for the test; usually this is the 0 to 200 N range but occasionally strong materials give results above 200 N and for very weak materials it may be desirable to use a 0 to 100 N range to impro

、ve the accuracy of the results. Fold back the two tongues at one end of the test piece and insert and clamp one in each jaw of the machine. 7.2 Start the machine so that the jaws separate at 100 mm/min, and record a trace of the force as the test continues. If autographic force recording is not avai

、lable on the tensile machine being used, set it to show the maximum force reached during the test. When the test piece has been torn for 12 mm, which will be indicated by the line across the test piece, stop the test. The test piece might however tear to one surface before the 12 mm tear length is c

、ompleted, in which case this is noted and the maximum force reached is measured. Clamp the other end of the test piece in the jaws and test in the same way. 1) Shoe and Allied Trades Research Association. BS 5131-2.6:1979 2 BSI 09-1999 7.3 Repeat for other test pieces cut in the same direction. 7.4

、Test the test pieces cut in the other direction, in the same way. 8 Calculation and expression of results 8.1 For each direction of test record the highest force observed for each of the six tears and take the arithmetic mean of the three highest results. Divide this mean by the width of the test pi

、ece (25 mm) and record the split tear strength in that direction as N/mm width, to one decimal place. 8.2 State how many (if any) of the three results contributing to the average were for tests which had torn to one surface within the specified 12 mm. 9 Test report Include the following items in the

、 test report: a) the average tearing strength per unit width (split tear strength) for each direction, tested in accordance with 8.1; b) the number of test results in which the tear ran to one surface, in accordance with 8.2; c) the nature and full identification of the sample(s); d) reference to th
