It is important that readers assure themselves they are using a current Standard, which should include any amendments which may have been published since the Standard was purchased. 10、 Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee PK-025, Packaging Code at the request of Australian Industry. The objective of this Standard is to specify a method for testing tack for low-tack adhesives on pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes. CONTENTS Page FOREWORD3 1 SCOPE4 2 REFERENCED

、monstrates good reproducibility within a single laboratory and shows the ability to detect batch-to-batch variations accurately if adhesive film thickness is held constant. Rolling ball tack is not intended as an investigative tool since for most pressure sensitive adhesive applications rolling ball

、 tack results do not correlate well with application tack requirements. In the determination of tack by the rolling-ball method, a steel ball is released at the top of an incline, allowed to accelerate down the incline and roll on to a horizontal surface covered with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. T

、ack is determined by measuring the distance that the ball travels across the adhesive before stopping. There are two major retarding forces applied by the adhesive to the ball; the adhesion between the ball and the adhesive, often called “grab” and the “plowing effect” or energy required to push the

、 adhesive out of the balls path. Test results are influenced by adhesive film thickness, bond of adhesive to backing and backing rigidity, so these factors should be carefully controlled for satisfactory comparisons. 17、ling a ball over an adhesive to determine tack. NOTE: This test method is not recommended for the specification of end use products. 2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS The following documents are referred to in this Standard: AS 2400 Packaging 2400.1 Part 1: Glossary of packaging terms 3 DEFINITIONS For the pur

、pose of this Standard, the following terms and definitions and those in AS 2400.1 apply: 3.1 Tack The property of an adhesive that enables it to form a bond of measurable strength immediately after adhesive and adherent are brought into contact under low pressure. 4 REAGENTS 4.1 Isopropynol Reagent

、grade is required. NOTE: Acetone, reagent grade, may also be used. 5 APPARATUS AND MATERIALS The following apparatus and materials are required: (a) Inclined troughThe inclined trough is made of aluminium, which has a release lever at the top, which shall allow the ball to roll down the groove gaini

、ng momentum (using Figure 1). (b) BallThe ball shall be made of stainless steel which is resistant to corrosion. The diameter of the ball shall be 11 mm unless other wise specified by the purchaser. 6 TEST CONDITIONS Testing shall be conducted at 23 5C and 50 5% relative humidity. Accessed by UNIVER

、SITY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA on 09 May 2008 5 AS 2313.1.32005 .au Standards Australia 7 PREPARATION OF TEST SPECIMENS The test specimen shall be a substrate coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. The roll shall be conditioned at 23 5C and 50 5% relative humidity for 24 1 h prior to testing. The test

、specimen shall be between 375 mm and 400 mm in length. The test specimen shall have a width between 24 mm and 51 mm. Specific sample dimensions may be selected for the adhesive to be tested if it is agreed between the purchaser and the supplier. NOTE: Since the adhesive length only needs to be suffi

、cient to allow the adhesive to stop the ball; and the width sufficiently wide enough to allow the ball track. 8 PROCEDURE The procedure shall be as follows: (a) Dispense the isopropynol (4.1) on the clean stainless steel ball (5(b) which is free from corrosion and wipe until dry. Dispense the isopro

、pynol (4.1) on the clean inclined trough (5(a) which is free from corrosion and wipe until dry. NOTE: Either surgical gauze or untreated paper tissue can be used as the cleaning material, as these are lint free and contain no soluble additives. (b) Select a hard horizontal surface of sufficient size

、 to conduct the test. NOTE: Metal or glass plates should be used. (c) Arrange the specimen to be tested, adhesive side up, in line with the inclined trough. The specimen shall be free of any wrinkles, creases or splices. The end of the specimen opposite the incline shall be held on the table with ta

、pe or a weight. Only one test shall be run on each specimen. (d) Prior to the roll of the ball and after cleaning inspect the ball for scratches, flat spots or any other damage that might impede the momentum of the ball. When positioning the ball on the upper side of the release a pair of dry, clean

、 tongs shall be used. (e) Release the ball and allow it to roll to a stop on the adhesive. (f) Measure the distance from the point in millimetres where the ball initially contacts the adhesive to where the ball is in contact when it stops. All measurements shall be made to the nearest millimetre. 9

、TEST REPORT 9.1 General The stopping distance measurement shall be the average of five tests results. 9.2 Report The following information shall be reported. (a) Identification of the adhesive tested and the substrate on which it is coated including type, source and manufactures code number. (b) The

、 thickness of the adhesive and the substrate. (c) Conditions of test area, temperature and humidity. (d) Number of specimens tested. Accessed by UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA on 09 May 2008 AS 2313.1.32005 6 Standards Australia .au (e) Maximum, minimum and average value of rolling ball distance. NOT

、E: A standard deviation for the value may also be included. (f) Observations on the visual inspection of the test, e.g. noticeable residue on the ball or lifting of the adhesive from the substrate. (g) Reference to this Australian Standard, i.e. AS 2313.1.3.
