、is based on information provided by the Electrical Research Association, but is looked upon as an interim revision pending more radical changes. Type 2, which was in the previous edition, has been omitted because this type is no longer being produced in sufficient quantity to justify inclusion in th

、is standard. Types 3/85RT, 3/105RT and 5/180RT have also been omitted because these types are no longer being produced in sufficient quantity to justify inclusion in the standard, thus rendering the symbol “R”, used to denote additional external textile braid, unnecessary. Type 4. extruded polyethyl

、ene sleeving, has been omitted because it is no longer readily available. The remaining Types retain their original numbers to avoid confusion. The majority of Types 1/105a and 1/105b and 1/130a and 1/130b sleeving do not meet the requirements for tropical sleeving given in Clauses 11, 12 and 13. Co

、nsequently, Type 105T has been deleted and Type 130T replaced by Types 1/130a and 1/130b, but sleeving of these Types which meets the requirements of Clauses 11, 12 and 13 may include the letter T in its reference. Type 1/60T has been replaced by sleeving which has a higher operating temperature, e.

、g. Types 1/105a and 1/105b. Type 5/180 now includes a and b differentiated by a test for volatile content. The heat test has been omitted because it is considered that the property assessed by this test is covered by the test for resistance to soldering heat, the bending test after ageing and/or the

、 shrinkage test. The test for long term damp heat has been omitted because it is considered that the accelerated damp heat test examines similar properties. The test for resistance to splitting was previously applicable to Types 3 and 5. It is now applicable only to Type 3 and a test for tensile str

、ength and elongation at break has been included for Type 5. The flexibility test has been re-named the bending test and a new flexibility test has been included as an optional requirement. The slip-back test has been omitted because sleeving with external braid is no longer covered by this standard.

、 Amendment No. 1:1979 introduces into Type 1 sleeving Types 1/155a and 1/155b. It also permits the use of knitted bases as well as braids for all Type 1 sleeving. Different fibres or a different construction in the textile base of the sleeving may affect certain properties not specifically covered i

Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This do

、cument comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages 1 to 22, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover. Licensed

、cal conductors and connections of electrical apparatus. This standard includes sleevings made by varnishing or coating a textile base, and others formed by extrusion of suitable insulating materials. NOTE 1Some of the types of sleeving included are also suitable, especially in the larger sizes, for

、covering and holding together a number of conductors which are already individually insulated. NOTE 2The tests specified are designed to control the quality of the sleeving, but it is recognized that they do not completely establish the suitability of sleeving for varnish and wax impregnation proces

、ses or the use of sleeving in contact with other materials. It is, therefore, recommended that appropriate impregnation or compatibility tests be agreed where necessary between the purchaser and the supplier to suit individual circumstances. NOTE 3The titles of the British Standards referred to in t

、his standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Types of sleeving 2.1 References. The various sleevings have been given references, e.g. Type 3/105T, in which the first number indicates the general make-up and material of the sleeving, the second number indicates (in degrees Celsius) the maximum

、 operating temperature, and the letter T signifies that this sleeving is suitable for use under tropical or similar severe conditions, within the appropriate temperature limitation. The Type numbers are not consecutive for the reasons given in the Foreword. 2.2 Construction. The sleeving shall be co

、nstructed as follows: Type 1. Sleeving made by applying to a textile base an adherent continuous coating of suitable compound or varnish. For sleeving having a textile base of glass, the glass shall be of “E Type” (low alkali content). Type 3. Extruded sleeving of polyvinyl chloride or its co-polyme

、rs, suitably plasticized: 3/85T 3/105T Type 5. Extruded sleeving of silicone elastomer: 5/180Ta1) 5/180Tb Type 6. Extruded sleeving of polytetrafluoroethylene: 6/250T 1/105a:Textile base of cotton or regenerated cellulose. 1/105b:Textile base of cotton or regenerated cellulose with a higher electric

、al strength than that of 1/105a. 1/130a:Textile base of glass or polyethylene terephthalate. 1/130b:Textile base of glass or polyethylene terephthalate with a higher electrical strength than that of 1/130a. 1/155a:Textile base of glass with higher temperature resisting coating than that of 1/130a. 1

、/155b:Textile base of glass with higher temperature resisting coating than that of 1/130a and higher dielectric strength than that of 1/155a. NOTESleeving of Types 1/105a, 1/105b, 1/130a, 1/130b, 1/155a and 1/155b satisfying the requirements given in clauses 11, 12 and 13 may include the letter “T”

、in the reference. 1/180Ta: Single or double textile base of glass usually with a silicone varnish or elastomer coating applied by a dipping process. 1/180Tb: Textile base of glass with a silicone elastomer coating applied by extrusion or a multi-dip process. The sleeving has a higher electric streng

、th than that of 1/180Ta. 1/250T:Textile base of glass usually with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating. 1) The requirements of Type 5/180Ta do not necessitate the elastomer being fully cured. This is normally only of importance where the sleeving is to be used at elevated temperature under circ

、umstances where the release of volatiles is undesirable. In such circumstances Type 5/180Tb should be specified by the purchaser. Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Tue Nov 28 13:55:09 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 2848:1973 2 BSI 02-2000 3 Colour 3.1 Type 1 (coated textile)

、 sleeving. Type 1 sleeving shall be in one of the following colours: black, blue, brown, cream, green, grey, orange, pink, red, violet, white or yellow. The colour shall be a reasonable match with one of those specified in BS 6746C. 3.2 Type 3 (PVC) sleeving or Type 1 with PVC coating. The colour of

、 the opaque versions of these types of sleeving shall be one of those specified in BS 6746C. The colour of transparent Type 3 sleeving is left for agreement between the purchaser and the supplier. 3.3 Type 5 (silicone) sleeving or Type 1 with silicone elastomer coating. The colour of the opaque vers

、ions of these types of sleeving shall be a reasonable match to one of those specified in BS 6746C. It is recognized that an exact match may be impracticable and that a true black cannot be obtained in silicone elastomer. The colour of transparent Type 5 sleeving is left for agreement between the pur

、chaser and the supplier. 3.4 Type 6 (PTFE) sleeving. Type 6 sleeving shall be in natural or coloured form. When coloured, the colour shall be a reasonable match with one of those specified in BS 6746C. It is recognized that an exact match may be impracticable and that PTFE sleeving may not be availa

、ble in the full colour range. 3.5 Colour fastness to light. Sleeving of Types 3, 5 and 6 when tested for colour fastness to light as described in BS 3858 shall meet the requirements of Standard 6. 4 Finish 4.1 The sleeving shall be uniform in appearance and reasonably smooth and free from external a

、nd internal irregularities. Sleeving incorporating textiles shall be made from yarn free from defects likely to cause irregularities. The coating material of textile-based sleeving shall be uniform and continuous and shall adhere firmly to the textile base. 5 Dimensions and tolerances 5.1 Length. Th

、e lengths in which the sleeving is to be supplied are left for agreement between the purchaser and the supplier. NOTESleevings are normally supplied in the following lengths: Type 1. In lengths up to 1 m (present commercial practice is for lengths up to one yard and will continue until suppliers are

、 able to convert their equipment) or in continuous lengths. All other types. In continuous lengths wound on reels or in coils. The continuous lengths of Type 6 which are available are dependent on the bore and wall thickness of the sleeving. All types may usually be obtained in cut lengths. 5.2 Bore

、 and wall thickness. The nominal bore diameter shall be one of those specified in Table 2. Due precautions shall be taken against flattening. When measured in accordance with Appendix A, the bore and mean wall thickness shall comply with the requirements given in Table 3. In addition, the minimum me

、asured wall thickness of extruded sleeving, established by any suitable means at any cross section, shall at any point be not less than the appropriate minimum given in Table 3. NOTE 1Sleeving with non-standard nominal bore diameters may be obtainable from some suppliers. NOTE 2In the cases given in note 1 it is recommended that the tolerances should be those for the next smaller standard nominal bore diameter.
