、f the Elements and Components for Building Standards Committee. It deals with the quality, performance and dimensions of rigid PVC (polyvinyl chloride) corrugated sheeting produced by extrusion and forming to the desired profile. Requirements for seven profiles and related dimensions are specified i

、n Part 2 of this standard. The appendix giving recommendations for use is no longer included and reference should be made to BS 5427. Attention is drawn to the fragile nature of the material in the context of access and safety. PVC corrugated sheeting softens at temperatures above those met with in

、normal service. Wherever it is used, care should be taken to ensure that the finished construction will comply with the relevant Building Regulations. Information on the fire performance of profiled sheeting may be obtained from BS 5427. Reference should also be made to BS 5427 for information on pr

、evention of pull-through of fasteners and compatibility with sealants. A range of colours for external cladding materials, including plastics sheeting, is given in BS 4904. It is recommended that the colour be agreed between the purchaser and the supplier and a sample specimen of the agreed colour r

、The sheeting is of the following three types of which only type A is required to comply with the requirements of clause 11. Type A: transparent (natural) Type B: transparent (tinted or coloured) Type C: translucent or opaque NOTEA certain degree of tinting may occur in some natural sheets during the

、 manufacturing process but these sheets are still designated “natural”. Where colouring has been deliberately introduced to achieve a specific effect sheets are designated “tinted” or “coloured”. 2 References The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on page 10. 3 Materi

、al 3.1 The material from which the sheet is produced shall consist substantially of polyvinyl chloride. Only those additives that are needed for the manufacture of the polymer and for its subsequent conversion into sound durable sheet of good surface finish and mechanical strength and such pigments,

、 dyes or tints as are necessary to meet the requirements of clause 4 may be added. 3.2 The use of the manufacturers own clean rework material complying with the requirements of this standard is permitted; no other rework material shall be used. 4 Colour fastness When the sheeting is tested by the me

、thod given in Appendix A, there shall be no noticeable deterioration in its appearance or colour. 5 Heat stability When the sheet is tested by the method described in Appendix B, the time taken for the sample to become completely black shall be not less than 90 min. 6 Thickness The thickness of the

、sheet shall be quoted by the manufacturer. This shall be not less than 1.30 mm for profile depths of 55 mm and under, and not less than 1.40 mm for profile depths above 55 mm. The measured thickness at any point on the sheet shall be not less than 96 % of the thickness quoted by the manufacturer. 7

、Dimensions The length of the sheet when measured at a temperature of 23 2 C shall be not less than the nominal length quoted by the manufacturer. The ends shall be cut square. The edges of the sheet shall be parallel to the longitudinal corrugations. 8 Retention of profile When the sheet is tested b

、y the method given in Appendix C, the change in the pitch of the corrugations of the test piece shall not exceed 2 %. 9 Resistance to falling weight When the sheet is tested by the method given in Appendix D, the test piece shall not break or sustain any crack or tear extending from one surface to t

、he other. This test shall not be carried out earlier than 24 h after manufacture. 10 Resistance to loading 10.1 When sheet of profile numbers 1 to 7, as specified in Part 2 of this standard, is tested by the method given in Appendix E, the maximum deflection of the test piece shall not exceed the va

、lues given in Table 1. 10.2 When sheet of any profile is tested by the method given in Appendix E, the residual deflection shall be not more than 10 % of the maximum value after the load has been removed for 6 h and there shall be no residual deformation of the profile. Table 1 Maximum deflection 11

、 Light transmission When tested by the method given in Appendix F or by the method given in Appendix G, type A transparent (natural) sheet shall have a light transmission of not less than 80 % for sheet of profile depth 55 mm and under, and of not less than 72 % for sheet of profile depth above 55 m

、At the present time only lamps based on the xenon arc1) have been found to be sufficiently reliable to warrant the publication of a standard test method. The spectral characteristics of the xenon arc emission are very similar to those of daylight if a suitable filter is placed between it and the PVC

、 specimens to correct the ultraviolet radiation. The weathering performance of the specimen may vary with the temperature of the specimen during the test period and also with the effective relative humidity of the atmosphere in the exposure chamber. The method is intended to provide a measure of dur

、ability of rigid PVC materials exposed to external weather conditions. A.2 Principle The specimen is exposed to the light source and compared periodically with a specimen of unexposed material. Any deterioration in appearance or colour is noted. A.3 Apparatus and conditions A.3.1 Apparatus. The foll

、owing apparatus is required. A.3.1.1 Light source. The light source shall be a xenon arc lamp giving a radiation intensity at the specimen of 180 000 lux 10 %. A.3.1.2 Light filter. A filter shall be placed between the light source and the specimens so that the spectral characteristics of the radiat

、ion approximate to those of daylight (see A.1). A.3.2 Exposure conditions. The specimens shall be exposed in a well ventilated exposure chamber and suspended in a manner such that both sides are uncovered. The variation of the light intensity of the area covered by the specimens shall not exceed 10

、% of the mean. The temperature in the chamber shall be 22 3 C. The relative humidity in the chamber shall be 70 5 %. Any convenient specimen size may be used, consistent with easy assessment of its condition. A.4 Procedure Expose the test specimen for 4 000 h. At intervals of approximately 500 h com

、pare the exposed specimen with a specimen of unexposed material and report any deterioration in appearance or colour. Appendix B Heat stability test B.1 General One of the factors which determines the durability of rigid PVC sheet is the amount of heat stabilizer remaining in the sheet after the pro

、duction process. In this test it is measured by maintaining a specimen at an elevated temperature and using up the heat stabilizer. B.2 Principle The specimen is placed in an oven maintained at a temperature of 190 2 C, and the time taken for it to become completely black is measured. B.3 Apparatus

、The following apparatus is required. B.3.1 A forced air circulation oven2) that can be controlled to a temperature of 190 2 C and that is fitted with a sliding sample frame in the door to minimize heat loss when test pieces are introduced or removed (see Figure 1). B.3.2 Two 12 mm wide strips of thi

、n mild steel, perforated to take small bolts and nuts. B.4 Test piece The test piece shall be 100 mm 25 mm the thickness of the sheet. The test piece should preferably be cut with its longest dimension parallel to the extrusion direction to avoid relaxation in the oven. B.5 Procedure Clamp the test

、piece between the two metal strips by a bolt and nut passing through a pre-drilled hole, 6 mm from one end of the test piece. Further secure the test piece on either side by a bolt and nut through both metal strips. Attach the metal strips to the sliding sample frame so that the test piece is suspen

、ded vertically. Then push the sliding frame into the oven, which shall be at a temperature of 190 2 C. After 90 min remove the test piece from the oven and examine against a white background. 1) The Xenotest light and weather-fastness testers 150 and 450 made by Original Hanau Quarzlampen GmbH, Hana

、u, West Germany and the Atlas 60 testers made by Atlas Electric Devices Co., 4114 North Ravenswood Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60613, USA, are suitable for this method. 2) A suitable oven is manufactured by Laboratory Thermal Equipment Ltd., Greenfield, Oldham, Lancs.
