9、 ii BSI 03-2000 Foreword This British Standard has been prepared under the direction of the Automobile Standards Policy Committee, to establish a standard of safety during lifting for accessory jacks for passenger cars or passenger car derivatives and towed units. Examples of use are for changing th

10、e wheel and for inserting axle stands. It is important that the design, manufacture and materials of the jack are kept within the compass of sound engineering practice so that the jack is suitable for the purpose intended. This amendment introduces a method of test, B.5, for the permanence of markin

11、gs which replaces reference to BS 4781-1:1973 and BS 4781-2:1979. The amended standard supersedes BS AU 172b which is withdrawn. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compli

14、specifies the safety requirements for the performance of general purpose accessory jacks for vehicles of the following categories (see Appendix A): passenger car M1 and N1; towed units O1 (i.e. under 0.75 t). Trolley jacks as specified in BS AU 154 or original equipment jacks as specified in BS AU 1

15、65 are not covered by this standard. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 General All accessible surfaces shall be free from sharp edges and lubricant shall be applied to moving parts. 3 Performance 3.1 General New accessory jacks sha

16、ll be used for each of the tests specified in Appendix B. 3.2 Endurance When tested in accordance with B.1, there shall be no failure or visible permanent deformation. At completion of the test, the force required to operate the jack shall not differ from the value determined before the test commenc

17、ed by more than 10 %. At completion of the test, the jack shall comply with clause 4. 3.3 Load capacity When tested in accordance with B.2, there shall be no failure or visible permanent deformation. The reduction of height shall not exceed 5 %. 3.4 Stability When tested in accordance with B.3, the

18、jack shall remain stable. The upper surface of the head of the jack shall not tilt more than 10 out of parallel with the surface on which it is standing. 3.5 Overtravel When tested in accordance with B.4, overtravel shall not occur, nor shall the overtravel mechanism fail. 4 Design 4.1 The head of t

19、he jack shall be designed so as to counteract slipping (e.g. by ribbing or by cross hatching). The lifting pad shall have a minimum bearing area of 600 mm2 and a minimum width of 25 mm. 4.2 The rate at which the jack is lifted or lowered shall be capable of being regulated, or stopped, under all loa

20、ding conditions. The direction of operation shall not be reversible due to any load condition. 4.3 The method of release of hydraulic jacks shall require a distinctly different operation from raising. It shall only be possible to raise and lower any jack from the same side. 4.4 It shall not be neces

21、sary to reach under the vehicle to operate the jack, other than to place it in position and to remove it after it has been lowered. 4.5 For jacks with a capacity up to 2 t, the projected area of the base within 10 mm of the lowest point shall have an area of at least 50 cm2/t. For jacks with a capac

22、ity in excess of 2 t the minimum area of the base shall be calculated on the basis of 100 cm2 plus 5 cm2/t of the rated capacity. 4.6 There shall be positive means of preventing overtravel without any damage or jamming or failure at maximum extension when tested in accordance with Appendix B.4. NOTE

23、A pressure release valve incorporated in a hydraulic jack is not sufficient to comply with this requirement. 4.7 Hydraulic jacks shall incorporate an overload device. Where a jack is fitted with a means of protection against raising the head cap under a load in excess of its nominal capacity, such p

24、rotection shall operate at the nominal capacitypercent. 4.8 It shall not be possible for the user to lift the vehicle with a jack incorrectly assembled. 26、arning to locate the jack securely, to use it on a firm level surface and to chock the wheels. The following statement in bold type: “Do not get under the car when it is supported only by a jack”; d) the additional statement “Refer to instructions for safe use”; e) the manufacturers name, trade mark

27、 or other means of identification; f) the fluid to be used for a hydraulic jack. After testing in accordance with B.5 all markings shall be legible. 6 Instructions for safe use Instructions for use shall be provided with the jack as follows: “Note that the jack is for wheel changing and snow chain a

28、ttachment (if appropriate). Lift only one wheel at a time. Do not place any part of your body under the vehicle when it is supported by the jack alone. Use hazard lights when wheel changing at the roadside. Apply the handbrake and place the gears in first or reverse, or “P” on automatic transmission

29、s. Chock the wheels. Occupants should leave the vehicle. Do not start the engine when the vehicle is jacked up. Loosen wheel nuts slightly prior to jacking up the vehicle. Screw up the wheel nuts before lowering the vehicle. Finally tighten the wheel nuts after lowering the vehicle. Securely stow th

30、e jack and do not leave loose. Note that it is very dangerous for users to go underneath a vehicle supported by a jack, whether or not other supports are in use. Take special advice before using the jack on a caravan or light trailer. Note that the jack should be inspected and lubricated regularly.”

31、 Manufacturers should take note of the DTI/Institute for Consumer Ergonomics document “Instructions for Consumer Products”. 1) Marking BS AU 172c on or in relation to a product represents a manufacturers declaration of conformity, ie a claim by or on behalf of the manufacturer that the product meets

32、 the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is therefore solely the responsibility of the person making the claim. Cycle

35、the jack mechanism 100 times against a load equal to the marked safe working load. Each cycle shall commence at one half of the lifting height, rise to within 5 mm of the full extent, remain there for 2 min, and then return to the one half level. B.2 Load capacity test Support the base of the jack o

36、n a flat horizontal surface. Raise the lifting pad from one-third of its maximum extension to its full extent against a load equivalent to the safe working load. Set the jack at half travel. Apply a load equal to twice the safe working load to the lifting pad for a period of 1 h. Where an overload l

37、imiting device prevents the application of twice the safe working load, then sustain a load of not less than 105 % of the safe working load for 15 min. B.3 Stability test B.3.1 Carry out the tests B.3.2 and B.3.3 with the jack at its maximum extension, apply a force equivalent to the marked safe wor

38、king load to the lifting pad by means of a 60 steel cone. Place the jack base on a flat steel surface, and constrain the point of the cone to move in a vertical line of action. B.3.2 With the jack base horizontal, apply the load at a point on the greatest horizontal dimension of the lifting pad 75 %

39、 of the radial distance from the centre, for a minimum of 60 s. If the lifting pad can be rotated with respect to the jack base, choose the least favourable angular position. B.3.3 Support the jack base at an angle of 6 0.5 from the horizontal and apply the load to the centre of the lifting pad for

40、a minimum of 60 s. Choose the angular position of the jack base to be least favourable for stability. B.3.4 If the lifting pad has a hole or recess at the required loading position that prevents contact of the point of the cone, a flat steel plate 3 mm to 6 mm in thickness can be placed between the

41、cone and the lifting pad upper surface. B.4 Overtravel test Operate the jack to full extension and apply a torque of 40 Nm to the operating handle of the jack. In the case of hydraulically operated jacks operate the mechanism at a speed between 20 and 40 cycles per minute. B.5 Test for permanence of

42、 marking B.5.1 Test sample Take a sample jack from a batch as specified by the manufacturers quality control procedures or customer requirements and test the marked area (see clause 5) in accordance with B.5.2. For ease of handling, a section of the jack containing the marked area may be cut or remo

43、ved from the sampled jack. B.5.2 Procedure B.5.2.1 Immerse the test sample in commercial unleaded petrol to BS EN 228 for 10 min at 20 C 2 C. Remove from the petrol and rub the markings over an area of approximately 10 mm 50 mm with firm hand pressure for 30 s using mutton cloth dampened in the petr

47、lean water into which 0.5 % by volume of detergent has been thoroughly mixed. Keep the sample immersed at 20 C 2 C for 24 h. Remove from the water and rub the markings over an area of approximately 10 mm 50 mm with firm hand pressure for 30 s using mutton cloth dampened in water/detergent mixture. B
