、aken from the surface layer of a material during a specified heat treatment in the presence of an absorbent material is measured. 3 Apparatus and materials 3.1 A ventilated oven, capable of being maintained at (100 2) C. 3.2 A metal container, of volume approximately 900 000 mm3, with perforated cov

、er. 3.3 Metal mesh circular dishes, with approximately 1 hole per mm2; diameter 60 mm, height approximately 6 mm. 3.4 Activated charcoal, free of powder, grain size (4 to 6) mm, of uniform type and quality. The charcoal, sieved and dried at 70 C (preferably in a vacuum) to a constant mass, shall be

、kept in a hermetically sealed container. 3.5 A balance with a sensitivity of 1 mg. 4 Sampling and preparation of test pieces Take a representative sample from the available material. Take three test pieces peeled or cut from the surface layer of the sample, the distance between the outer edge of the

、 sample and the nearest edge of the test pieces being at least 100 mm, of minimum area 2 000 mm2. 5 Conditioning Condition the test pieces at a temperature of (23 2) C and relative humidity of (50 5) % for a minimum of 24 h. Maintain these conditions when carrying out the test. 6 Procedure Weigh eac

、h test piece separately and record the mass. Place the test piece in a metal dish. Using new charcoal for each test, pour approximately 120 000 mm3 of activated charcoal into the bottom of the container. Place the dish on the charcoal and cover with a further 120 000 mm3 of charcoal. Repeat this pro

、cedure for the two other test pieces, then place the perforated cover on the container. Place the container in the oven which has previously been brought up to a temperature of 100 C. Six hours later, remove the test pieces, leave them to cool for 24 h in the standard atmosphere and then weigh them

、again. 7 Calculation and expression of results Express the change in mass loss as a percentage of the original mass for each test piece. Calculate the mean value for volatile loss for the three test pieces. 8 Test report The test report shall include the following information: a) a reference to this

、 standard, i.e. EN 664; b) a complete identification of the product tested, including type, source, manufacturers reference numbers; c) the previous history of the sample; d) the mean value for volatile loss; e) any deviation from this standard which may have affected the results. 4 blank BS EN 664:
