、SI 04-20003 1 General 1.1 Scope and object The object of this part of IEC 1300 is to measure the accuracy and repeatability of the attenuation value settings of a variable attenuator. 1.2 General description A variable attenuator is adjusted sequentially through a series of attenuation settings pres

、cribed in the detail specification. The attenuation value is measured at each setting. This sequence of measurements is repeated a number of times as prescribed in the detail specification. The accuracy of the attenuator at each setting is then given by the difference between the mean of the measure

、d values and the nominal value. The repeatability at each setting is given by plus or minus three times the standard deviation of the measurements. This is illustrated in the following figures. Figure 1a shows an attenuator which is calibrated to read the actual or measured attenuation. Figure 1b sh

、ows an attenuator which is calibrated relative to a zero-point attenuation setting. When the attenuator is adjusted to read zero, the actual or measured attenuation will be some value greater than zero. 29、rements. The performance of a variable attenuator will be influenced by the spectral characteristics of the source, and therefore the optical wavelength and bandwidth requirements shall be specified in the detail specification. The coherence and polarization characteristics may also influence perfor

、mance and shall be specified, if applicable. 2.2 Excitation unit (E) This is a special launch fibre or imaging system designed to achieve the specified launch conditions. 2.3 Optical detector (D) Any detector non-linearity contributes directly to measurement error. Therefore, it is important that th

、e detector and associated amplification circuits exhibit sufficiently good linearity over all measurement ranges. The amplifier usually contributes the most to non-linearity, particularly when the transimpedance is changed as the ranges are switched. Precaution should be taken to ensure that the pow

、er density at the detector is always at least 10 dB below the saturation level of the detector. 2.4 Temporary joint (TJ) The insertion loss of the temporary joint shall be sufficiently stable over the time required to perform the measurements. A fusion splice is recommended. 2.5 Reference fibre (RF)

、 A reference fibre or two reference connector pigtails (RA and RB), as specified in the detail specification. 38、 provides absolute calibration of the attenuation settings (see Figure 1a), the accuracy of the “ith” attenuation setting is given by: If the manufacturer provides calibration relative to the zero-point setting (see Figure 1b), the above formula is modified to: 3.10 The repeatability of the “ith” at

、tenuation setting is given by: %ai = 3i(dB) where i is the standard deviation of the measurements. A minimum of m = 20 measurements at each setting is recommended to provide a reasonable estimate of i. NOTEIt is permissible to measure the attenuation settings in the reverse direction to what is desc

、ribed in this procedure, i.e., from the highest to lowest values. To avoid mechanical backlash which may reduce the precision of the measurements, the adjustment to each attenuation value should be made in the direction of increasing attenuation except for the lowest setting. 4 Details to be specifi
