、 BSI BS SP 118:1958 BSI 02-20001 1 Scope This British Standard specifies the materials, dimensions and finish of tie rods with Unified threads for aircraft. NOTEThe figures in British units are to be regarded as the standard. A table is given in the Appendix to provide a ready means of calculating t

、he approximate millimetre equivalents of the inch dimensions. More accurate conversions should be based on the tables in BS 350. 2 Material and manufacture a) Each tie rod shall be made from one piece of material only. b) The tie rods shall be manufactured from material complying with the requiremen

、ts of the latest issue of Ministry of Supply aircraft material specification D.T.D. 5032, Carbon steel (suitable for the manufacture of tie rods). The material shall be subject to cold work over the reduced portion of the rods during the process of manufacture to achieve the mechanical properties li

、sted in Table 1. c) The material used for the manufacture of the tie rods shall be ground after cutting and straightening to eliminate surface decarbonization. d) The tie rods shall be free from twists and waves; the reduced portion shall be concentric with the ends. 3 Dimensions The overall length

、of the tie rods shall be as specified on the order (see Clause 7) and other dimensions shall conform to the dimensions and tolerances specified in Table 1 and Table 2 4 Screw threads The screw threads shall be rolled and shall conform to the Class 2A limits and tolerances specified in the latest edi

、tion of BS 1580, “Unified screw threads”. The screw threads shall be required to pass gauges approved by the Inspecting Authority. 5 Finish The tie rods shall be cadmium plated in accordance with the latest issue of Ministry of Supply aircraft process specification D.T.D. 904. 6 Freedom from defects

、 a) The rods shall be free from harmful defects. b) Rods may be rejected at any time for faults in, or revealed by, manufacture, although they have been made from material passed previously for chemical composition and mechanical properties. 7 Identification and marking a) All tie rods shall have th

、e appropriate code letter and an indication of length see Clause 7 b) marked on the portion of the rod between the end of thread and the square portion. b) The British Standard number shall not be marked on the tie rods, but shall be used, with the appropriate code letter and the length of the rod t

、o within 0.1 in., for the purpose of specifying tie rods on drawings and for ordering. For example, the complete part reference of a 5/16 in. UNF tie rod with an overall length of 46.5 in. is SP.118/G/46.5 for ordering, etc., but the corresponding marking on the rod will be G/46.5. c) All tie rods s

、hall be identified as “Unified” by a plain extension on the end of the thread complying with the dimensions specified in Table 1. 8 Tests Production samples of finished tie rods, or test samples typical thereof, shall be periodically submitted to a tensile test to verify that the rods do not fail at

、 loads below those specified in Table 1. For rods from any one coil the minimum frequency of such tests shall be: After completion of the forming process one tie rod at the beginning of manufacture from each combination of machines used in the forming process and subsequently one tie rod after every
