、olished ferrule. 1.2 General description The ferrule endface radius R is defined as the radius of curvature of the portion of the endface which is domed for physical contact polishing. It is assumed that the endface is spherical, although in practice the endface is often aspherical (see Figure 1). T

、hree methods are described for measuring the endface radius. Method 1 Profiling the endface with a surface analyzer Method 2 Analyzing the separation of interference rings when the endface is imaged with an interferometer Method 3 Use of a profile projector to make a simple go/no go measurement of p

、hysical contact and angled physical contact shaped endfaces. 1.3 Normative reference The following normative document contains provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this standard. At the time of publication, the edition indicated was valid. All normative document

、s are subject to revision and parties to agreements based on this part of IEC 1300 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent edition of the normative document indicated below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers of currently valid International Standards. ISO 25

、o the nominal angle of the ferrule tip. The preferred angle for a V-groove is 108 according to ISO 2538. 2.1.2 Profilometer A profilometer, equipped with a chisel type probe, is arranged so that the motion of the trace is perpendicular to the axis of the ferrule. 2.1.3 Chart recorder A chart recorde

、r is used to record the trace of the profilometer as it moves across the endface of the ferrule. 31、 BSI EN 61300-3-16:1997 4 BSI 04-2000 2.2 Method 2 Interferometry The apparatus consists of the following elements. 2.2.1 V-groove fixture This fixture is parallel to the viewing axis of a flat plate interferometer or a non-contact interferometer operating at a known wavelength. In the case of angle

、d endface type ferrules, the V-groove fixture shall be adjusted according to the nominal angle of the ferrule endface. 2.2.2 Television camera and monitor This allows the display of the interference fringes that result from viewing the spherical endface with the interferometer. 2.2.3 Means of vision

、 This may be manual or automatic and permits the determination of the diameter and location of at least two rings. 2.3 Method 3 Profile projector The apparatus consists of a profile projector having the following features: magnification of 20 minimum; simultaneous top and bottom side illumination; g

、oniometer table; cross-hair chart; chart with the minimum and maximum profile of the object to be measured. 3 Procedure 3.1 Method 1 Profiling NOTEThe traces of some profilometers only show surface finish and may not accurately show the curvature of the surface. 3.1.1 Affix the ferrule in the V-groo

、ve so that the portion of the ferrule closest to the end face is in contact with the V-groove. The length of the ferrule contacting the V-groove shall be two times the diameter of the ferrule in the contact area. 3.1.2 Adjust the chisel tip of the profilometer so that the bottom edge of the tip is p

、erpendicular to the axis of the ferrule. 3.1.3 Adjust the apparatus so that the profilometer trace passes through the axis of the ferrule. 3.1.4 Cause the profilometer to trace across the surface of the endface, recording the displacement as a function of length on the chart recorder (see Figure 2).

、two points equidistant from the highest point. Choose the points to cover an area approximately 500 4m in diameter. 3.1.6 Calculate the radius of curvature R (see Figure 4) from the following formula: where cis the length of the chord; his the height of the apex above the chord. For additional confi

、dence, more points from the trace may be digitized and entered into a circle fit calculation. 3.2 Method 2 Interferometer measurement 3.2.1 Affix the ferrule to the V-groove and focus the interferometer to obtain the interference fringes in the area surrounding the bore at the centre of the ferrule

、endface. 3.2.2 Measure the diameter of two rings designated as m and m+p, where ring m+p is larger than ring m. Choose the m and m+p diameters to cover an area of approximately 500 4m around the centre of the ferrule. Calculate the radius of curvature from the following equation: R = (D2m+p D2m)/4p2

、 where Note that any two rings can be used to make the measurement. NOTEFor additional confidence, measure the diameter of three or more rings and calculate an average radius based on all the possible combinations of two ring diameters. 3.3 Method 3 Profile projector 3.3.1 For completely assembled c

、onnectors, install the connector with its key oriented as required for the relevant connector design on the goniometer table. 3.3.2 Adjust the illumination and focusing mechanism of the projector to optimum visibility on the screen. 3.3.3 Install the chart with the connector ferrule minimum and maxi

、mum shape on the projection screen. 3.3.4 Set the screen rotation dial to zero. 3.3.5 Using the goniometer fine adjustment align the image of the ferrule with the x-axis of the chart according to Figure 5, or according to Figure 6 with respect to angled endface connectors. 3.3.6 Move the goniometer

、table along the x-axis to compare the image of the ferrule on the screen with the cross-hair pattern on the chart. Figure 4 Measurements for calculating the radius of curvature R c2 8h - -= Ris the calculated radius of curvature; Dm+pis the diameter of the m+p ring; Dmis the diameter of the m ring.
