1、- 9006379 0004873 T3T I GENERAL MOTORS ENGINEERING STANDARDS I Materials and Processes - Paint I PAINT EQUIPMENT CLEANING SOLVENT - ENAMELS 9984488 1 SCOPE. This spccikation umrs the basic physical, chemical, and performance requirements of solvents used to clean the extemal surfaces of spray and ot

2、her equipment used for applying enamel (curing type) finishes including high solids primers and topcoats. These cleaners must have flash points greater than 38 C to reduce fke hazards particularly when used on electrostatic application equipment. The clean- er may be a single solvent or a blend of c

3、lasses of solvents, such as aromatic hydmcahm, ketones, and esters. Cleaners covered under this specification may not be effective for all paint materials or equipment and therefore are not inter- changeable. Cleaners must be evaluated and approved for use with each specific plant application. 2 REF

4、ERENCED STANDARDS. ASTM D56 ASTM 01078 ASTM DlOl2 ASTM D1298 3 REQUIREMENTS. Materials submiti for qualifica- tion to this specification must meet all the physical, chemical, and performance requirements herein 3.1 Physical Requirements. This specification covers indi- vidual solvents or blends of s

5、olvents having a wide range of physical properties. Upon submission, the following physical properties shall be provided for each cleaner and shall form the specification requirement for all subsequent lots: 3.1.1 Distillation Range (A!XM D1078), C: Initial boiling point, mill 5% 10% 20% 30% 40% SO%

6、 60% 70% 80% Ez 3.1.2 3.1.3 3.1.4 End (Dry) Point, max Flash Point (ASTM DS6), C: 38 C minimum. Specitic Gravity (ASTM D1298) at 25 C. Aniline Point (ASTM D1012), C. 3.2 Chemical Requirements. 5 SOURCE SHIPMENT RESPONSIBILITY. It will be the responsibility of the supplier to insure that the material

7、 is not exposed to temperatures during shipment which would cause the material to fail to meet any of the requirements of this specibtion. 3.2.1 Identification. Gas chromatographic and infrared 6 INSPECTION AND REJECTION. All shipments of analysis will he used to identify, characterize, and qualify

8、new material or parts under contract or purchase order manufac- materials for approval to this specification. The material must be free of any suspended particles, corrosion products, undissolved water, silicones, or any other materials detrimental to the painting proce

10、ss. Product must be essentially colorless and not impart any color to coating materials. 3.2.3 odor. The odor of the material shall be reviewed in comparison with current production materials. Any signifi- cant change in the characteristic odor of the material must be evaluated in a GM approved labo

11、ratory and production trial. Any change in formulation must be reassessed for effect on odor. 3.2.4 Hazardous Matetials Documentation. The supplier must provide all required safety documentation per Section 4 upon initial submission. Materials covered by this specifica- tion are used in spray booths

12、 and must not be classified as F-code (FOOl - FOOS) waste (per 40 CFR 261.31). Toxicity and flammability will be assesxd by the Hazardous Materials Committee of the using plant to determine conditions for use and handling precautions. The supplier must comply with all governmental regulations regard

13、ing proper Welling of haz- ardous materials. 3.2.5 Solvent Emissions Compliance. The supplier must furnish to Plant Engineering of the using plant all information required to assess the effect of the use of the material on meeting governmental restrictions on the discharge of volatile organic compou

14、nds (VGC) and disposal of hazardous waste, 3.3 Perf oxmance Requirements. The cleaner shall be as- sessed and found satisfactory in plant trials with the intended paint materials to be cleaned. Subsequently, the material must perform satisfactorily in the specilied production application. Failure to

15、 do so shall constitute reson for rejection regardless of compliance with the other requirements of this specifica- tion. 4 INlTIAL SOURCE APPROVAL No shipment shall be made by any supplier until representative initial production samples have been approved by engineering as meeting the requirements

16、of this specification. 4.1 Completed copies of the GM Material safety Data Sheet and Critical Material Register (available from the engineering department or laboratory) must be submitted with any new submissions or where a composition change has occurred. -.
