1、I GENERAL MOTORS ENGINEERING STANDARDS I Materials and Processes - Paint 1 BODY SHOP HIGHLIGHTING MATERIAL 9964117 1 SCOPE. This qecifica!.ion covers the rcquircxznts for a sprayable or wipe-on highlighting fluid that is used to reveal surba defects in the sheet metal that needs refinishing prior to

2、 phosphate in the body shop. These mater%& may bc applied on a fully or partially assembled automobile or truck body prior to paint processing at either low pressure or by wipon to provide the highlighting on a body-in-white. The mat&al mustalsoprovide&upomryresistancttorustingwhichwill not interfer

3、e with subsequent phosphating of the metal 1.1 Since the condition of the metal surface is critical to the proper perfotmance of the phosphate, the mat&ah used under this specification must not adversely affect the formation of the proper phosphate coating. Therefore these mate&h am con- sidered par

4、t of the metal pretreatment process and shall be supplied by the phosphate vendor in each plant Any excep- tions to this rule must be first approved by the GM North American Operations (NAO) Paint Engineering Department. 1.2 Specified herein are the material requirements per the GM NAO Paint Eugiuee

5、ring Department. These specifications are used to verify that the materials have been processed to produce a fmished product of quality consistent with that proven in initial qualification testing. 1.3 RESTRICTED AND REPORTABLE CHEMICALS (GM1OOOM). By 1997 start of saleable vehicles, all materials s

6、upplied to this specification must comply with the rquim- ments listed in GMlOOOM, “Restricted and Reportable chemicals.” 2 REFERENCED STANDARDS. GMlOOOM GM4389M GM4386M ASTM D92 3 REQUIREMENTS. !See the geneml phosphate spec& cation (GM4386M) for additional requirements and requirement details not

7、listed in this specification. 3.1 All mquimments for the highlighter shall be tested for performance versus a currently approved phosphate system without highlighter material. 3.2 RUST PREVENTI ON. GM CRS and EG test panels shall bc spray applied with this material and air blown dry. Panels must rem

8、ain free of rust a&r exposure for 72 h 20 to 25.G 50% f 10% RI-I. 3.3 PANEL PREPARATION. See GM4386M. Must meet the requirements listed in GM4386M, 3.1 to 3.4.6 and 3.5.8. Perform these tests for all substrates listed in GM4386M, 3.4.1 (only CRS and EG needed for 3.5.8). The number of panels pertest

9、shouldbetbeasthatlistodinthedprocG dum or GM4386M. 3.4 FLASH POINT (ASTM D92). These materials must have a flash point no less than 9OC. 35 VOLATTLE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. Any qualified material must have a VOC level no greater than -06 kg/L. 3.6 S E4BILITX Mat&al shall be unaffected by normal stor- age

10、 periods and normal temperature variations. 4 PROCESS REOUIREMENrS. 4.1 MIXING. The compound must be a conccntmte which can be applied to the body in a concentmtion ranging from a 1 to 5O:l dilution with plant water, to be spcci6ed by the sup- plier. 4.2 FUNCTIONAL REQ UIRWENTS. The material must pe

11、rform satisfactorily in the specified production application. Failure to do so shall constitute reason for rejection, regardless of compliance with the other requirements of this specification. 4.3 QUALITY CONTROL REQ UIREMENTS. In addition to nxeting all of the above detailed requirements, all subs

12、e- quent lots of au approved compound will be requited to meet the standards of composition established in the originally approved lot. Reference original i&ared spectra and gas chro- matOgrams. 5 SOURCE SHIPMENT RESPONSIBILKY, It will be the responsibility of the supplier to insum thar the material

13、 is not exposed to temperahues during shipmnt which would cause the material to fail to meet any of the require- ments of this specification. 6 INlTlAL SOURCE APPROVAL. No shipment shall be made by any supplier until representative initial production samples have been approved by engineering as meet

14、ing the requirements of this specification. 6.1 Completed copies of the GM Material Safety Data Sheet and Critical Ma&al Register (available from the engineering department or laboratory), or equivalent, must be submitted with any new submissions or where a composition change has occurred. 7 INSPECT

15、lON AND REJECTION. All shipments of material or parts under contract of purchase order manufac- tured to this specification shall be quivalent msmW to the initial samples approved by engineer. no changes in either formulation or manufacturing processes permitted without prior notification and approv

16、al by engincer- ing. Lack of notification by the supplier constitutes grounds for rejection of any shipment. While samples may be taken from incoming shipments and checked for conformance to this specification, the supplier shall accept the responsibility for incoming shipments m%ing this specificat

17、ion without depen- dence upon purchaser s inspection. In addition the supplier shall be responsible for submitting a CERTIFICATE OF ANALYSIS with each batch of material arriving at a plant. This docunxnt shall be prepared and provide data in accord- ance with the mq uircmenrs detailed in GM4389M. 8

18、APPROVED SOURCES. Engineering qualification of an approved source is mquired for this specification.
