、- 900b379 0004596 894 I GENERAL MOTORS ENGINEERING STANDARDS I Materials and Processes - Paint 1 PRIMER CHIP RESISTANT, WEATHERABLE, BLACKOUT 9984189 1 SCOPE. This specification covers the requirements for a low bake, thermosetting, chip resistant primer applied by spraying. This materiaI is intende
、d to provide a smooth chip and corrosion resistant coating, for steel or composite sub- strates, when applied over previously applied primer such as cathodic electrocoat. It is intended to protect lower body com- posite or metal surfaces that are subjected to severe gravel impact and also perform as
、 a blackout material without subse- quent topcoating. 2 REFERENCED STANDARDS. GM4356M GM9501P GM4389M GM9505P GM4465M GM9508P GM9071P GM9509P GM9163P GM9543P GM9595P ASTM D1186 ASTM D2246 ASTM D3170 ASTM D3363 3 REQUIREMENTS. The requirements listed below shall be met on all critical surfaces of the
、 part or as designated by the applicable engineering document. These requirements shall be determined on the baked anticbip primer. This primer shall meet Type IU primer requirements of GM4356M. 3.1 FILM THICKNESS (ASTM 01186). The range and tar- get values may vary with each suppliers material. The
、refore, these values will be declared by tbe supplier and agreed on with the responsible GM paint engineer prior to the initiation of testing. 3.2 WTHERABILI A . The coating shall be exposed in South Florida (5 south per GM9163P). Teat requimmems for test samples and control (current production) are
、 as follows: 3.2.1 A minimum of 12 months Florida exposure with panels prepared to this specification must retain at least 90% of the original gloss and DOI. In addition there must be no signifi- cant shift in color or adverse appearance change. 4 SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION. 4.1 APPLICATION AND BAKE.
、The material must be capable of being applied from all conventional spray equip ment. Nominal bake for this material is 30 minutes 12O C. Baking within the range of this process specification shall have no effect on product durability. The supplier must provide data showing the viscosity-temperature
、 relationships and circulation stability characteristics of the materials. 4.2 PANEL PREPARATION. A detailed description of the test panel and qualification requirements for the material is covered in this specification. The engineering group responsi- ble for coordinating the material development s
、hould always be contacted prior to preparation of panels and initiation of testing to determine if the test program should deviate in any way from the specifted GM4356M and plant application. 4.2.1 A sufftcient number of panels should be prepared to accommodate all required tests; however, some test
、s may be combined on the same panels. Pretreatment and priming of panels will be established at the beginning of the test pro- grams. All bakes refer to substrate temperature in gas fired ovens. 4.2.2 All bakes are described in Table 1. TABLE 1 - BAKE CHART Bake Normal Primer Time, minutes Temperatu

Both the supplier and the engineer must agree on the target prior to testing. 5 SOURCE SHIPMENT RESPONSIB
、ILlTY. It will be the rcsponsibiity of the supplier to insure that the material is not exposed to temperatures during shipment which would cause the material to fail to meet any of the requirements of this specification. 8 INlTlAL SOURCE APPROVAL. No shipment shall be made by any supplier until repr
、esentative initial production samples have been approved by engineering as meeting the requirements of this specification. 6.1 Completed copies of the GM Material Safety Data Sheet and Critical Material Register (available from the engineering department or laboratory), or equivalent, must be submit
、ted with any new submissions or where a composition change has OCCUlTCd. 6.2 SUBMISSION PACKAGE. Four (4) submission pack- ages shall be prepared for distribution. One package should be prepared for each of the 3 GM divisions and one for documen- tation retention to insure corporate product complian
、ce with GM standards. One complete set of test panels shall be retained by the supplier and be available for review as long as the product is in production. The submission packages shall contain a submission letter, panel preparation data, test data, product data sheet, 8 x 10” photographs of each p
、anel and key process control information. The package shall be dated and signed by the GM Corporate Primer Committee acknowledg- ing that the testing procedures complied with this specification. 7 INSPECTlON AND REJECTION. All shipments of material or parts under contract or purchase order manufac-
、tured to this specificatian shalJ be equivalent in every respect to the initial samples approved by engineering. There shall be no changes in either formulation or manufacturing processes pemitted without prior notification and approval by engineer- ing. Lack of notification by the supplier constitu
