、quirements and associated methods of test for gas-fired convector heaters burning 1st, 2nd and 3rd family gases. Since 1974, discussions have been proceeding in the Technical Committee CEN/TC 62 of the European Committee for Standardization towards a harmonized European standard for gas-fired convec

、tor heaters; however, it has not yet proved possible for this European standard to be agreed and it has therefore been decided that this Part of BS 5258 should be published. While the requirements and methods of test given in this Part of BS 5258 follow existing UK practice, they are in no way inten

、ded to prejudice UK participation in European standardization or the implementation of any resultant European standard or Harmonization Document of which the UK approves. Requirements for the safety and performance of 1st family gas convector heaters were previously given in BS 1250-1 and BS 1250-4

、while those for 3rd family appliances were given in BS 2773; these standards have now been withdrawn and the relevant safety requirements, revised where necessary, have been incorporated in this Part of BS 5258 together with requirements for 2nd family appliances. Where technically appropriate, the

、requirements have been harmonized with other Parts of BS 5258. Thermal performance requirements for these appliances are the subject of BS 6332-4. In common with other Parts of BS 5258 currently being revised, this Part can be applied to all production appliances through a recognized scheme of quali

、ty assurance, whereas earlier Parts were written with type approval in mind. The intention is that all appliances manufactured in accordance with this standard will be safe in normal use when installed and maintained in accordance with the relevant British Standard codes of practice and with the man

、ufacturers instructions. Furthermore, such servicing as may be necessary to maintain the appliance in a safe condition should be able to be carried out by a competent fitter without difficulty. The codes of practice relevant to this Part of BS 5258 are BS 5440-1 and BS 5440-2, BS 5871 and BS 5482-1,

、 BS 5482-2 and BS 5482-3. Attention is drawn to the requirements of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, Electrical Equipment Safety Regulations, Heating Appliances (Fireguards) Regulations and various Building Regulations. The following Parts of BS 5258 are already published or are, a

General 1 Scope This Part of BS 5258 specifies safety requirements and describes associated methods of test for

、domestic gas-fired convector heaters having an input rating not exceeding 25 kW and of the following flue types: a) open-flued (natural draught and fan-powered); b) balanced-flued (natural draught and fan-powered); c) Se-duct. In specifying requirements for appliances burning 2nd family gases it is

、assumed that a meter governor will be fitted and for appliances burning 3rd family gases it is assumed that the gas supply from the container will be governed by a pressure regulator complying with BS 3016. The requirements for controls relate to controls fitted as part of, or supplied with, particu

、lar appliances; they do not necessarily provide a complete specification for controls intended for general use. This Part of BS 5258 is not applicable to: 1) flueless appliances; 2) the special requirements for appliances with premixed gas and air burners; 3) type C2 appliances burning 3rd family ga

、ses (these appliances are not manufactured at present); 4) appliances that incorporate their own butane container. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the page 30. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Part of BS 5258, the definitions given in BS 1179:1967,

、 BS 1179-6 and in the relevant British Standard codes of practice apply, together with the following. 2.1 adjustment pressure the pressure, measured at the test point, that is required to obtain the rated heat input using the reference test gas 2.2 rated heat input the manufacturers declared heat in
