、provide a range of standardized builders hardware for use in the post war housing programme. It was revised in 1954 and took into account the development of alternative materials for a number of the items specified. In due course BS 1331 will be replaced completely by a number of new British Standar

、ds which will be expressed in metric units. This British Standard, the first of the new standards, specifies performance criteria for lever and knob furniture for use with locks and latches on doors. Because of the complexity of the subject, the material cannot be specified in detail for each piece

、of every component. Likewise dimensions of those pieces cannot be given to suit all materials. This British Standard does not aim to specify metric design. It is expressed wholly in metric terms but these are based on British practice. Thus, the tolerances which are given enable existing practice ba

、sed on imperial measurements to conform to the requirements of the new standard. Equivalent imperial measurements if required may be determined from BS 350, “Conversion factors and tables” Part 1, “Basis of tables. Conversion factors” and Part 2, “Detailed conversion tables”. A British Standard does

、 not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an insid

The fixing bolt

、s shall be not greater than 5 mm in diameter. Bolt fixing systems shall be in accordance with Figure 1. 5.1.2 Bolt fixing systems not obstructed by the lock or latch case shall have the following minimum dimensions. 1) For locks. 31、, (c) BSI BS 4951:1973 2 BSI 03-2000 NOTE 1The minimum dimensions in 5.1.2 1) and 5.1.2 2) are approximately 10 mm large than the corresponding dimensions of cases for locks and latches complying with BS 455, (patterns L4, L5 and L9). Locks and latches with larger cases are also available. Whenever

、these are used, furniture with suitably increased bolt centres should be selected. NOTE 2Where requested by the purchaser, spindles of 8 mm square may be supplied. In such cases, provided the other requirements of the standard are met, the furniture shall be deemed to comply with the standard. NOTE

、3In the event of the spindle system being fully floating it is essential that the spindle be of such length as will permit engagement to full depth of cored hole in one side and simultaneously permit of minimum 12.00 mm engagement in other side. NOTE 4When the door is of a finished thickness differe

、nt from 33 mm to 46 mm finished thickness, the manufacturer requires to be advised of the thickness to enable him to supply a spindle of the appropriate length. 6 Materials All components shall be manufactured from materials complying with or equivalent to the appropriate British Standard where such

、 standard is available. Metals likely to promote electrolytic action shall not be used in direct contact with each other unless suitably protected. 7 Finishes 7.1 Electroplated coatings of nickel or chromium shall be in accordance with the provisions of BS 1224 appropriate to the conditions of servi

、ce specified. 7.2 Anodized aluminium alloys shall be in accordance with the provisions of BS 1615 appropriate to the conditions of service specified. 7.3 Any other finish shall be to the appropriate British Standard where available for that particular finish and service. Where no British Standard ex

、ists, obligation is laid on the manufacturer to specify the finish used. 8 Tests 8.1 This standard recognizes two categories of performance of lock and latch furniture: Category 1 Suitable for heavy duty (public use generally) Category 2 Suitable for normal duty (residential dwellings generally). 8.

、2 The method used to secure the specimens to test blocks is defined in Appendix A. 8.3 Specimens shall be submitted to and comply with the test routine in the following sequence: 9 Conditions of test The specimens shall be tested in the “as received” condition using the fixing and spindling system r

、ecommended by, or supplied by, the manufacturer. 10 Marking Lock and latch furniture manufactured in compliance with this British Standard shall be marked with the following particulars. 1) The name, trade mark or other means of identification of the manufacturer. 2) The number of this British Stand

、ard, i.e. BS 4951. NOTE 1The mark BS 4951 on or in relation to the product is a claim by the manufacturer that it complies with the requirements of this standard. T

、hese blocks shall be 33 mm finished thickness and shall be made of whitewood (European), straight grained and free from defects. The test pieces shall be prepared as follows: 1) The appropriate lock and latch shall be fitted to the blocks in the manner prescribed by BS 2088. The performance of the l

、ock or latch shall be not less than that called for in BS 2088. In the case of non-spring loaded furniture, the lock or latch shall be of a type incorporating a sprung follower of adequate strength to support the levers. The two component halves of the specimen shall be fixed to opposite faces of th

、e test block, inter-connected through the block and the lock follower by means of the spindling system supplied with the specimen by the manufacturer. 2) Spring-loaded furniture. For the purpose of conducting tests no. 2 and 6 (see B.2 and B.6 in Appendix B) spring-loaded furniture shall be mounted

、as for 1) above, incorporating a spindling system but omitting the lock or latch. 3) Non-spring loaded furniture. For the purpose of conducting tests no. 2 and 6 (see B.2 and B.6 in Appendix B) non-spring loaded furniture shall be mounted as for 1) above. 4) The fixing screws, bolts or other devices

、 used shall be those supplied by, or recommended by, the manufacturer. Appendix B Mechanical tests B.1 Definition The original rest position of the levers is defined as the position of the levers before commencing the test procedure. This position shall be measured and recorded. B.2 Strength of retu

、rn mechanism (test no. 2) Figure 6 shows a suitable test rig. The specimens mounted on the test block in accordance with A.1 2) or A.1 3) of Appendix A shall be subjected to the following tests. 1) A torque of 0.25 N m shall be applied to one of the levers. This torque shall not produce any angular

、movement of the lever from the original rest position. 2) A constant torque of 1.50 N m shall produce a movement of the lever of a minimum of 60. On removal of the torque, the lever shall return to its original rest position within a deviation of 4. 3) The lever shall now be rotated through intermediate angles from 0 to 60 at 10 intervals and shall always return to its original rest position within a deviation of 4. B.3 Strength of furniture and methods of fixing (test no. 3) The use of normal tensile testing procedure is preferred
