11、Foreword This Part of this British Standard has been prepared under the direction of the Elements and Components (of Diverse Materials) for Buildings Standards Committee. It is a metrication and revision of BS 3798:1964, which is withdrawn. Few changes to the basic specification have been made, othe

12、r than bringing the requirements for materials into line with those given for window sills in BS 5642-1. For a satisfactory coping system, it is essential to follow the recommendations for design and installation given in Appendix C. These have been included pending publication of BS 5628-31) which

13、will be a revision of CP121-1:1973. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summa

General 1 Scope This Part of this British Standard specifies requirements for copings of precast concrete, cast sto

16、ne, clayware, slate and other natural stone. Appendix C gives recommendations for the design and installation of copings. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this Part of this standard are listed on page 8. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Part of this standard the definitions gi

17、ven in BS 2787, BS 2847, BS 2900, BS 3589 and BS 4330 apply, together with the following. coping a unit placed at the head of a wall and designed to shed water from the top of the wall clear of all exposed faces of the walling it is intended to protect NOTEFor typical details see Figure 1. 3 Mass Th

18、e mass of flat-bottom copings not designed to be fixed by cramps or dowels shall be not less than 25 kg per metre run. 4 Cross-sectional dimensions Clip type copings shall have the cross-sectional dimensions shown in Figure 1(a). Flat-bottom copings shall have the cross-sectional dimensions shown in

19、 Figure 1(b). Tolerances shall be as specified for the particular material in the appropriate section of this standard. 5 Fixings Where copings are designed to be held down by means of cramps, holes suitable to receive the cramps shall be provided. NOTE 1Hole positions should be agreed between manuf

20、acturer and purchaser at the time of placing the order. NOTE 2For details of recommended fixings see Appendix C. 6 Marking The following particulars relating to copings made in accordance with this standard shall be indicated clearly on the delivery note, invoice, manufacturers or suppliers certific

21、ate or brochure supplied with the consignment of copings: a) the name, trade mark or other means of identification of the manufacturer; b) the number and date of this British Standard, i.e. BS 5642-2:19832). Section 2. Precast concrete copings 7 Materials 7.1 Cement. The cement shall be ordinary, ra

22、pid-hardening or white Portland cement complying with BS 12, or Portland-blastfurnace cement complying with BS 146-2 or BS 4246-2, or sulphate-resisting Portland cement complying with BS 4027. 7.2 Aggregate. Aggregates shall comply with the requirements of the standards in the following table, excep

23、t that the gradings may be modified to suit the manufacturing process. The aggregate shall be of a size not greater than a maximum nominal size of 14 mm. Where marine aggregates are used, they shall follow the recommendations of 6.2.2.3 of CP 110-1:1972. 7.3 Admixtures. Chloride based admixtures sha

24、ll be used only when the coping contains no embedded metal and is not to be fixed by cramps. The use of such admixtures shall follow the recommendations of CP 110-1:1972. Pigments shall comply with BS 1014. Other admixtures shall be used only if they have no adverse effects on the setting and harden

25、ing of the concrete or on the reinforcement. 2) Marking BS 5642-2:1983 on or in relation to a product is a claim by the manufacturer that the product has been manufactured to the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of such a claim is therefore solely the manufacturers responsibility. Enquirie

Sampling procedures and methods of test shall be in accordance with BS 3148. 7.5 Reinforcement. Reinforcement sh

30、all be: a) hot rolled steel bars complying with BS 4449; or b) cold worked steel bars complying with BS 4461; or c) hard drawn mild steel wire complying with BS 4482; or d) steel fabric complying with BS 4483; or e) bars, wire or fabric of stainless steel in 302, 304, or 321 alloys complying with BS

31、 970-1, or of phosphor bronze in PB 102 alloy complying with BS 2874, or of aluminium bronze in CA 103 or CA 104 alloys complying with BS 2874. The concrete cover to the reinforcement shall follow the recommendations given in Table 19 of CP 110-1:1972. Handling reinforcement shall be either: a) two

32、bars not less than 5 mm in diameter longitudinally, with transverse bars not less than 5 mm in diameter placed at maximum 400 mm centres; or b) a section of long mesh fabric complying with the requirements for grade C283 in BS 4483, and cut to provide two longitudinal bars. NOTEAs an additional safe

33、guard all steel reinforcement and tying wire, other than austenitic stainless steel, may be protected against corrosion after fabrication or cutting to size, either by hot dip galvanizing complying with BS 729 or by other means providing equal protection. 8 Concrete quality The concrete used in the

34、manufacture of the copings shall be of minimum grade 30 as detailed in Table 47 of CP 110-1:1972. Either a prescribed mix from Table 50 of CP 110-1:1972 or a designed mix with a minimum cement content of 350 kg/m3 shall be permitted. The fresh concrete shall be sampled and cube tested at 28 days in

35、accordance with CP 110-1:1972, using rate 2 of Table 51 of CP 110-1:1972 but not exceeding one sample per 20 m3. NOTEThe manufacturer should supply a test certificate if requested to do so by the specifier or purchaser. 9 Tolerances The actual sizes of copings shall be within the following permissib

36、le deviations from the manufacturers stated work sizes: a) + 0 mm, 6 mm on length; b) 3 mm on height and all other dimensions. 10 Finish The finish of precast concrete copings shall be smooth and even with true clean arrisses. There shall be no permanent staining or discoloration. NOTEOther finishes

37、 may be available. The supplier should, if required, supply a sample of representative size for the approval of the specifier or purchaser. Section 3. Cast stone copings 11 Materials 11.1 General. Materials other than aggregates (see 11.2), shall be as specified for precast concrete copings in claus

38、e 7. 11.2 Aggregate. Aggregates shall comply with BS 877-2, BS 882 or BS 3797-2, except that the gradings may be modified to suit the manufacturing process. For homogeneous cast stone and facing mixes, crushed stone, gravel or natural stone complying with BS 882 shall be used. For backing mixes natu

39、ral aggregate complying with BS 877-2 or BS 3797-2 shall be used. 12 Composition Cast stone shall be either homogeneous throughout or shall consist of a facing concrete not less than 20 mm thick and a backing concrete. In a coping comprising a facing and backing concrete, adequate bond between the f

40、acing and backing mixes shall be ensured by either a mechanical key or inter-diffusion, and any reinforcement shall be at least 10 mm from the interface between the mixes and shall comply with the requirements for cover given in 7.5. 13 Tests 13.1 General. Three copings shall be selected at random f

41、rom each consignment (or part thereof) of 1 000 copings, for testing. Making and testing the cubes shall be in accordance with BS 1881-108 and BS 1881-116 respectively but using the same method of compaction for the cubes as for the coping units. Cast stone from copings sampled in accordance with 13.1 shall comply with the requirements for strength and drying shrinkage specified in BS 1217. 13.3 Initial surface absorption. W

43、hen the exposed faces of three copings sampled in accordance with 13.1 are tested in accordance with BS 1881-5, after 3 days dry storage and not earlier than 28 days after manufacture, the initial surface absorption rate of each coping shall be not more than 0.25 mL/(m2 s) at 10 min and not more tha

44、n 0.10 mL/(m2 s) at 1 h. 14 Tolerances The actual sizes of copings shall be within the following permissible deviations from the manufacturers stated work sizes: a) + 0 mm, 6 mm on length; b) 3 mm on height and all other dimensions. 15 Finish Where rubbing and filling techniques are used the surface

45、 laitance of cement and fine aggregate shall be removed to reveal the aggregate. NOTEThe colour and appearance of the exposed face of cast stone should be agreed between the supplier and the specifier or purchaser at the time of placing the order. The supplier should, if required, supply a sample of

46、 representative size for the approval of the specifier or purchaser. Section 4. Clayware copings 16 Material and quality The copings shall be manufactured from fired clay, shale, brickearth or composite bodies producing stoneware, terracotta or faience. The copings shall be well fired and free from

47、cracks and other defects which would adversely affect their durability or performance. Copings shall comply with the requirements for frost resistance for special quality fired-clay bricks as specified in 12.5 of BS 3921:1974. 17 Tolerances The actual sizes of copings shall be within the following p

48、ermissible deviations from the manufacturers stated work sizes: a) + 0 mm, 6 mm on length; b) 3 mm on each dimension up to 150 mm and pro rata for longer dimensions. 18 Finish The finish of normal clayware and terracotta shall be faced or unglazed. The finish of faience shall be glazed. The finish o

49、f stoneware shall be either glazed or unglazed. NOTEThe colour and texture should be agreed between the specifier or purchaser and supplier. Section 5. Slate copings 19 Material and quality The slate shall be obtained only from metamorphic rock and shall be free from vents, cracks or fissures which would adversely affect the durability or performance of the coping. The slate shall be either type A or type B as determined by the sulphuric acid immersion test requirements of 23.2. NOTE 1Type A copings are suitable for areas of high air pollution whils
