It forms a part of BS 5000 which, together with BS 4999, “General requirements for rotating electrical machines”, will eventually form a comprehensive series of British Standards for rotating electrical machines. A list of
15、 the contents of BS 5000 showing all the parts envisaged in the foreseeable future is given in the General Introduction and Index (published separately) which will be brought up to date as new parts are published. The contents of BS 4999 are given in a separate index and introduction to that standar

19、ies such as circulating water pumps, boiler feed pumps, draught fans, pulverisers, etc., essential to the operation of the main generating units. This standard does not include motors which may be used for non-essential drives, such as ventilating fans, drainage pumps, cranes, etc., which do not nor
20、mally differ from their counterparts in general industrial service. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 General In addition to the requirements specified in this standard, motors shall also comply with BS 5000-99. 3 Types of environm
21、ental protection and classification of cooling methods Machines for indoor use shag have an enclosure giving a degree of protection not less than IP 12 (see BS 4999-105). For use outdoors or in exposed conditions, weather protected machines should be used, and the conditions should be specified at t
22、he time of enquiry. NOTEIn dirty atmospheres or other adverse conditions a closed air circuit machine may be required which may be either air or water cooled, depending on the coolant most readily available. For such machines the collector enclosure may alternatively be filter-ventilated, when this
23、is agreed between the manufacturer and the purchaser. 4 Duty and rating Machines shall be suitable for maximum continuous rating (MCR) or duty-type rating (DTR). NOTEAdjustable speed machines are normally rated at the highest and lowest speeds of the specified range; it is assumed that the load char
24、acteristic is such that one of these represents the most severe condition. Controllers used in conjunction with variable speed motors should be designed to match the motor ratings. 5 Voltage variation during operation Motors shall also be capable of supplying the starting and normal operating load r
25、equirements of the driven unit at 0.8 times the rated voltage for a time at least twice the normal starting time. D.C. motors intended for use from rectified a.c. supplies shall meet these requirements with the same variations on the a.c. supply to the rectifier. NOTEIf during starting conditions th
26、e supply voltage falls below 0.8 times the rated voltage and/or the total time at the reduced voltage exceeds twice the normal starting time, the relevant figures should be specified by the purchaser. 6 Frequency variation during operation Motors shall be capable of operating continuously at any fre
27、quency in the range 0.96 to 1.02 per unit (p.u.). Operation for short periods in an emergency shall also be possible at any frequency between 0.96 p.u. and 0.94 p.u. with voltage and load falling pro rata with the further drop in frequency below 0.96 p.u. When motors are required to operate under st
28、eady-state conditions with simultaneous variations of voltage and frequency, the permissible variations shall be as specified below. D.C. motors intended to operate from rectified a.c. supplies shall meet the above requirements assuming the same variations on the a.c. supply to the rectifier. 7 Char
29、acteristics 7.1 Starting performance of cage induction motors. Unless otherwise specified at the time of order, machines shall have characteristics as design N (see BS 4999-112) modified in accordance with the table given in 7.2 below. NOTEFor motors of large ratings (e.g. over 1 000 kilowatts) it m
30、ay not be economical or justifiable to conform to this requirement and in such cases it is recommended that the motor starting torque characteristics are matched to those of the driven plant so that the accelerating torque at any speed is not less than 0.1 times the rated load torque when the supply
31、 voltage is reduced to 0.9 times the rated value.
