、BSI 12-1999 National foreword This Part of this British Standard, prepared under the direction of the Office and Information Standards Committee, is identical with the second edition of ISO 2257 “Office machines and printing machines used for information processing Widths of fabric printing ribbons

、on spools” published in 1980 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The International Standard differs from the first edition of ISO 2257 in that widths of the individual colour bands of two-coloured printing ribbons are now also specified. The first edition of ISO 2257 was pub

、lished in 1972 and reproduced as BS 5519-2 in 1977. This edition is now superseded and has been withdrawn. Other Parts of this British Standard deal with different aspects of ribbons and spools used on office machines and data processing equipment as follows. Part 1:1977: Minimum markings to appear

、on containers of printing ribbons (Identical with ISO 2258:1976); Part 3:1977: Widths of one-time paper or plastic printing ribbons up to 19 mm wide and marking to indicate the end of the ribbons (Identical with ISO 2775:1977); Part 4:1977: Characteristics of cores for paper or plastic printing ribb

、ons (Identical with ISO 3540:1976); Part 5:1977: Recommendations for widths of fabric printing ribbons on spools exceeding 19 mm wide (Identical with ISO 3866:1977). Terminology and conventions. The text of the International Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as a British Standar

、d without deviation. Some terminology and certain conventions are not identical with those used in British Standards; attention is especially drawn to the following. Wherever the words “International Standard” appear, referring to this standard, they should be read as “British Standard”. The comma h

A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their co

、rrect application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. To reduce the number of widths, this International Standard has selected nine of them which cover the majo

、rity of requirements. 1 Scope and field of application This International Standard specifies the principal widths to be retained for fabric printing ribbons of 19 mm (0.75 in) width and less, on spools, intended for office machines and printing machines used for information processing. In case of tw

、o-coloured fabric printing ribbons, this International Standard also specifies the widths of the colour bands. Ribbons of more than 19 mm width are the subject of International Standard ISO 3866. 2 Methods of measuring widths Widths shall be measured on the ribbon when it is ready for use, kept flat

、, and not stretched, on a flat support. Measurements shall be carried out with the aid of any appropriate instrument, at a minimum of five points distributed at random over the whole length. For ribbons longer than 10 m (395 in) carry out measurements every 2 m (79 in). The arithmetical mean of the
