、n produced to meet the needs of the lift industry for a standard to replace withdrawn standard BS 529-2:1944. It is the eighth Part of BS 5655 relating to lifts and service lifts which will progressively supersede portions of BS 2655. The complete standard will comprise the following Parts. Part 1:

、Safety rules for the construction and installation of electric lifts (implementing EN 81/1), together with PD 6500, “Explanatory supplement to BS 5655-1”; Part 2: Specification for hydraulic lifts; Part 31): Safety rules for the construction and installation of electric service lifts (will implement

、 EN 81/3); Part 41): Safety rules for the construction and installation of hydraulic service lifts (will implement EN 81/4, if published); Part 5: Specification for dimensions of standard electric lift arrangements (implementing ISO 4190/1 and ISO 4190/3); Part 62): Code of practice for lifts; Part

、72): Specification for control devices, signals and additional fittings (will implement ISO 4190/5); Part 8: Specification for eyebolts for lift suspension; Part 92): Specification for guide rails (will implement ISO 7465). Subsequent Parts will deal with testing, inspection, etc. This Part of this

、standard relates to eyebolts which are subjected to axial loading only. The eyebolts are intended for use in conjunction with wire ropes complying with BS 329 and with thimbles complying with BS 464. In the mechanical properties listed in Table 1 of this standard the working load limits are based up

、on one-twelfth of the minimum breaking load of the relevant wire rope and also upon one-tenth of the minimum breaking load of the respective eyebolt. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correc

、t application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages 1 to 6, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyrig

、ht date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover. 1) Not yet in course of preparation. 2) In course of preparation. 19、5655-8:1983 BSI 02-19991 1 Scope This Part of BS 5655 specifies the material, dimensions, test requirements and safe working loads for eyebolts for lift suspension. Eight nominal sizes of eyebolt are listed covering nominal wire rope diameters in the range 6 mm to 22 mm inclusive. NOTEThe titles of

、the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Material The steel used for the manufacture of eyebolts shall comply with the following requirements as determined by a cast or product analysis on the bar or on the finished product. The maximum proportions of sulp

、hur and phosphorus shall be as follows. In all other respects the steel shall comply with one of the following steel specifications of BS 970-1. 080A273) 080A30 070M26 080M30 3 Form and dimensions The form and dimensions of eyebolts shall be as given in Figure 1 and Table 1. NOTEThe dimensions in Ta

、ble 1 have been formulated on the basis of the nominal diameter of the wire rope with which the eyebolts are to be used and on the available threads listed in BS 3643-1. 4 Forgings All eyebolts shall be forged in one piece. Prior to the thread being formed the forgings shall be descaled by pickling,

、 sand blasting or other suitable means after which the eyebolt shall be examined visually for surface defects. 5 Forging tolerances The dimensions of the forged portion of the eyebolts shall be within the tolerances given in Table 1. 6 Nominal sizes The nominal size4) of an eyebolt shall be the nomi

、nal diameter of the wire rope with which it is designed to be used (selected from Table 1). 7 Nominal lengths The nominal length4) of an eyebolt shall be the length of the shank (dimension F selected from Table 1). 8 Heat treatment Before cutting the screw threads and subjecting the eyebolts to the

、tensile tests specified in clauses 12 and 13 they shall be hardened and tempered to ensure that the mechanical properties given in Table 1 are achieved, by heating to a temperature between 860 C and 890 C, followed by quenching in oil or water and tempering at a temperature between 550 C and 660 C.

、9 Screw threads The screw threads listed in Table 1 shall comply with BS 3643-1. The tolerances of the threads shall be class 6g in accordance with BS 3643-2. The portion of the shank at the junction of the screw thread shall be runout or be provided with an undercut in accordance with BS 1936-2. Th

、e threads shall be cleanly cut and when visually examined shall be free from cracks and imperfections. 10 Nuts Each eyebolt shall be provided complete with two precision normal thickness hexagon nuts, complying with the requirements of BS 3692 with strength grade designation 6 and class 6H thread to

、lerances. 11 Split cotter pin hole and split cotter pin After the shank has been screwed a split cotter pin hole shall be drilled near the end of the shank in accordance with Table 1 and Figure 1. The centre line of the hole shall pass through the centre of the thread, perpendicular to the axis. A s

、uitable split cotter pin complying with the requirements of BS 1574 shall be provided. 31、ed in Table 1. The test shall be carried out by applying an axial tensile force between the threaded shank and the eye using a freely rotating round section pin passing through the eye. The diameter of this pin shall not exceed 50 % of the internal diameter of the eye (dimension C in Table 1). The t

、est shall be carried out as part of the manufacturers quality control procedures. For this purpose, one sample eyebolt shall be selected for test from each 100 eyebolts manufactured in a given size. This test is considered to be a destructive test. Even though an eyebolt may not fail the test it wil

、l have been stressed beyond its yield point; it shall therefore be considered as unfit for service. 13 Proof force After manufacture and heat treatment, each finished eyebolt shall be subjected to the appropriate proof force listed in Table 1, which it shall withstand without showing permanent defor

、mation. The test shall be carried out by applying an axial tensile force between the threaded shank and the eye using a freely rotating round section pin passing through the eye. The diameter of this pin shall not exceed 50 % of the internal diameter of the eye (dimension C in Table 1). 14 Examinati

、on After removal of the proof force each eyebolt shall be examined visually by a competent person and shall be deemed to comply with this British Standard only if it is found free from any flaw or defect considered to impair service performance. 15 Marking Each eyebolt shall be legibly and indelibly

、 marked in the position shown in Figure 1 with the following information: a) such marks or symbols as will allow identification with the manufacturers certificate of test; b) the grade letter M; c) the nominal size of the eyebolt. 16 Certificate of test A test and examination certificate in a manner

、 similar to that given in Appendix A shall be completed by the manufacturer or supplier and shall be provided with each consignment of eyebolts. The certificate shall include the following information: a) grade letter M; b) distinguishing mark to enable any particular eyebolt in the consignment to b

、e identified; c) proof force applied; d) working load limit (given in Table 1). The certificate shall also declare that each eyebolt complies with this British Standard and has been examined by a competent person. In addition, the declaration shall state the name and address of the testing establish

、ment and the status of the signatory. 17 Finish Eyebolts shall be in the black (self-colour) condition, free from rust and shall be oiled all over (including screw threads) with a non-drying lubricating oil. 18 Galvanizing If specified by the purchaser the eyebolts and the nuts shall be galvanized i

、n accordance with the requirements of BS 729, and the screw threads of the shank shall be “brush” or “spun” galvanized. The purchaser shall also clearly state whether he requires the galvanizing to be tested and the number of test samples to be so tested. (See Appendix B.) 19 Assembly Each eyebolt s
