、ncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 6884:1987 ii BSI 12-1999 Foreword This British Standard has been prepared under the direction of the Packaging and Freight Containers Standards Committee and is closely based on International Standard ISO 3676:1983 published by the International Organization for Standard

、ization. The nominal plan dimensions recommended are those given in ISO 3676 but the International Standard additionally specifies dimensional deviations of + 0, 40 mm. These deviations may cause problems in practice when the unit load is based on a pallet of identical plan dimensions, where ISO/DIS

、 6780-11) specifies tolerances of + 0, 6 mm, since this means that to meet the specified dimensions no part of the unit load can overhang the pallet at any point. The dimensional deviations specified in ISO 3676 are to be reconsidered by the responsible ISO Technical Committee but pending resolution

、 of this aspect the BSI committee has decided that the unit load plan dimensions established by ISO 3676 should be recognized by the publication of a related British Standard. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are re

、sponsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages 1 and 2, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard ha

This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover. 1) ISO/DIS 6780-1 has been approved for publication. It will be implemented in the United Kingdom as a revision of BS 2629-1. All nominal plan dimensions r

、ecommended in this standard are related to the dimensions of pallets in general use for the through transit of goods. The preferred unit load size forms part of the modular system based on the 600 mm 400 mm module, which incorporates the preferred ISO pallet size 1 200 mm 1 000 mm. Factors affecting

、 actual plan dimensions of unit loads are load bulge, which may arise from filling, compression or setting, and stacking irregularity which occurs particularly in the manual formulation of transit package layers in a unit load (see Figure 1). When choosing transport package materials and forming the

、 unit load, consideration should be given to transit and storage conditions and every effort should be made to ensure that the unit load length and width will not vary from the nominal dimensions specified by more than a small margin. 1 Scope This British Standard recommends nominal plan dimensions

、for unit loads suitable for the distribution of goods. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard, the following definitions apply. 2.1 unit load a load consisting of items or packages h

、eld together by one or more means, and shaped or fitted for handling, transporting, stacking and storing as a unit. The term is also used to describe a single large item suitable for the same purpose 2.2 plan dimensions the dimensions of the rectangle defined on a horizontal surface by the four vert

、ical planes intersecting at right angles which enclose a unit load free-standing on that surface (see Figure 2) 2.3 distribution of goods the movement of products from their point of origin to their destination and consisting of the following basic elements: a) packaging; b) unit loads; c) material

、handling systems; d) storage facilities; e) means of transportation. 3 Dimensions 3.1 The nominal plan dimensions of the preferred modular unit load are 1 200 mm 1 000 mm. NOTEThis unit load is derived from the basic 600 mm 400 mm module specified in BS 68372) and as such it is an element of the mod

、ular distribution system. 3.2 The nominal plan dimensions of 1 200 mm 800 mm and 1 140 mm 1 140 mm are also acceptable for unit loads. NOTEThe 1 140 mm 1 140 mm plan dimension is derived from the specified minimum internal width of the ISO series 1 general purpose freight container. Figure 1 Load bu
