、 Mon Dec 04 15:59:09 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 5442-3:1979 ii BSI 07-1999 Foreword This Part of this British Standard has been prepared under the direction of the Adhesives Standards Committee. Parts 1 and 2 of this British Standard deal, respectively, with adhesives for flooring

、 and for interior wall and ceiling coverings. A number of adhesives for the site-bonding of timber and wood-based materials fall within the scope of these Parts of the standard. In addition adhesives are widely used for the fabrication of external and internal wood joinery and of timber fitments, an

、d a number of wood-based materials used in construction are manufactured using adhesives. The conditions to which the adhesive bonds of such fitments and materials are exposed in construction vary widely, particularly in respect of the degree of exposure to moisture and, therefore, the corresponding

、 hazard to the bond. Part 3 of this standard, therefore, provides guidance on the suitability of wood adhesives in relation to the conditions to which adhesives bonds may be exposed during the construction and use of buildings, and in other situations, both for joints fabricated on site and in the f

、actory, and for manufactured materials such as plywood and wood particle board. In respect of the latter materials, attention is drawn to BS 1088 the choice, however, for any particular case, depends on economic and practical factors. Adhesives that comply with the requirements of BS 1444. 3 to 5. Phenol-formaldehyde, resorcinol-formald

、ehyde, and resorcinol/phenol-formaldehyde. Adhesives based on phenolic synthetic resins derived from the reaction of the phenolic materials named with formaldehyde and complying with the requirements of type WBP of BS 1203:1979 and BS 1204-1 as appropriate. 6 to 8. Urea-formaldehyde, urea/melamine-f

、ormaldehyde and melamine-formaldehyde. Adhesives based on amino-plastic synthetic resins derived from the reaction of urea, thiourea, melamine or allied compounds, or mixtures of these compounds with formaldehyde, and complying with the requirements of types BR or MR of BS 1203:1979 or BS 1204-1 and

、 BS 1204-2:1979 as appropriate. 9. Polyvinyl acetate emulsion (cross-linkable). Adhesives based on an aqueous emulsion of a polyvinyl acetate resin which contains in each molecule reactive groups capable of being cross-linked by the addition before application of a catalyst as a second component. 10

、. Epoxide resin. Adhesives based on a two-component system consisting of liquid epoxide resin and liquid hardener both of which may contain fillers, and which are mixed immediately before use. 11. Unsaturated polyester. Adhesives based on a blend of a poly-condensation product of saturated and unsat

、urated dicarboxylic acids and polyhydric alcohols with styrene or other unsaturated monomer with accelerator catalyst, fillers and structuring agents and supplied as a multi-component material requiring mixing immediately before use. 12 to 15. Elastomeric contact adhesives. Adhesives based on a solu

、tion of the named elastomer, together with modifying resins and stabilizers in organic solvents. Some members of this group are reactive, and may be cross-linked by the addition of a second component before application. 16 to 19. Elastomeric gap-filling adhesives. Adhesives based on a solution of th

、e named elastomer, together with modifying resins, in organic solvent, and containing fillers to produce a paste-like consistency. 20 to 23. Hot-melt adhesives. Adhesives based on thermo-plastic resin blends, substantially based on the named polymer, and possibly containing pigments or fillers, appl

、ied molten, and developing their adhesive strength simply by cooling. 24. Polychloroprene latex. Adhesives based on an aqueous dispersion of polychloroprene elastomer and synthetic resins possibly containing fillers. 25. Polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl acetate copolymer emulsion. Adhesives based on

、an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl acetate homopolymers or copolymers, which may contain fillers, and satisfying the requirements of BS 4071. 26. Acrylate polymer emulsion. Adhesives based on an acrylate ester copolymer emulsion which may contain resin modifiers and/or fillers. 5 Code for suitability

、of adhesives for Table 1 NOTE 1Where a D code is given in the table, it is understood to be suitable also for conditions under A and BC. Similarly a BC code is suitable for conditions under A. NOTE 2The first line of Table 1 gives the highest suitability coding that can be obtained with some members

、 of the class of adhesives indicated, provided that the adherends are also suitable for the degree of exposure indicated in that coding. NOTE 3Certain urea formaldehyde-based adhesives which comply with the requirements of type MR of BS 1204-1 and BS 1204-2 have been found suitable for applications

、where the moisture content of natural softwood can exceed 18 % in service but which does not remain at this figure continuously; they are suitable also where joints are protected by paint films and are not subjected to loads. These adhesives are generally found to give satisfactory service in situat

、ions where the temperature may exceed 50 C. For those applications marked with an asterisk in Table 1, it is recommended that the urea formaldehyde-based adhesive should comply with the above requirement. NOTE 4For assembling components on site the adhesives and conditions should not be inferior to

、those used for factory assembly. ASuitable for service inside heated and ventilated buildings and in other environments where the equilibrium moisture content of natural softwood does not exceed 18 % and the bond-line remains below a temperature of 50 C. BC Suitable for exposure conditions intermedi

、ate between A and D bearing in mind that any given set of exposure conditions can have different results depending upon the type of wood and on the article or fabrication in question. DSuitable for full exposure to weather or to water immersion. SCould be suitable in special cases, but is not used i
