、der the direction of the Plastics Standards Policy Committee and is a revision of BS 5734-4:1980, which is withdrawn. This Part of BS 5734 is the fourth in a series for polyester moulding compounds; the other Parts are as follows: Part 1: Methods of test; Part 2: Specification for dough moulding com

、pounds for electrical purposes; Part 3: Specification for dough moulding compounds for mechanical purposes; Part 5: Specification for sheet moulding compounds for mechanical purposes. Part 4 deals with electrical grades of sheet moulding compounds which are classified into three types according to t

、heir mechanical properties and may be further distinguished by their oxygen index. In this revision the test methods have been updated. The mechanical requirements in this Part are identical to those in Part 5 but additional tests for material used for electrical purposes are specified. It should be

、 noted that this specification requires the fibrous reinforcement to be E-glass, whereas BS 5734-5 does not do so. Given in Appendix A is a list of additional properties that may be the subject of purchaser/supplier agreements, together with appropriate test methods that can be used to assess compli

Users of this British Standard are advised to consider the desirability of third party certification of product conformity with this British Standard based on testing and continuing surveillance, which may be coupled with assessment of a suppliers quality systems against

、 the appropriate Part of BS 5750. Enquiries as to the availability of third party certification schemes will be forwarded by BSI to the Association of Certification Bodies. If a third party certification scheme does not already exist, users should consider approaching an appropriate body from the li

Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pag

This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.

、 and which are further distinguished by their oxygen index. Compounds whose fibrous reinforcement includes materials other than E-glass are excluded. NOTE 1Appendix A lists further properties and appropriate test methods that may be specified by agreement between the purchaser and the supplier. NOTE

、 2The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Part of BS 5734, the following definitions apply. 2.1 E-glass low alkali glass containing not more than 1 % of alkali metal oxides expressed as Na2O 2.2 batch a q

、uantity of material so designated by the manufacturer and of uniform quality 2.3 flatwise perpendicular to the plane of the sheet, a direction in which a load or electric stress may be applied in testing a sheet 2.4 edgewise parallel to the plane of the sheet, a direction in which a load or electric

、 stress may be applied in testing a sheet 3 Classification Requirements are specified for the following three types of sheet moulding compounds. The mechanical properties are the same as in BS 5734-5 and the suffix E indicates that they are electrical grades: S1E: an electrical type of material with

、 superior mechanical properties; S2E: an electrical type of standard commercial material with good mechanical properties; S3E: an electrical type of general purpose material with lower mechanical properties. NOTECompounds may be further distinguished by their oxygen index if agreed between the purch

、aser and the supplier (see Appendix A). 4 Composition The material shall consist of a chemically-thickened unsaturated polyester resin system, combined with fillers and E-glass fibre reinforcement, which is supplied in sheet form and is capable of being cured by moulding under heat and pressure. 5 P

、reparation of test specimens The moulding conditions shall be as specified in Annex C of BS 2782:Method 902A. Unless otherwise stated in the test requirements, the test specimens shall be cut from a moulded sheet of the appropriate thickness, which shall have been made in a positive or semi-positive

、 mould. 6 Conditioning of test specimens before testing Unless otherwise specified in the test method, moulded test specimens shall be conditioned for at least 16 h at a temperature of 23 2 C and ambient relative humidity before testing. 7 Properties The material, as supplied, shall comply with clau

、ses 8 and 9. The moulded and conditioned material (see clauses 5 and 6) shall comply with Table 1, when tested by the methods given therein. NOTESee Appendix A for optional requirements that a purchaser may wish to specify. 8 Mass per unit area and mass distribution When tested by the method describ

、ed in method 1 of BS 5734-1:1990 the consistency of the unmoulded sheet shall comply with the following. a) The average mass per unit area of all test specimens taken from any strip across a roll shall not differ by more than 12 % from the nominal value for the average mass per unit area which shall

、 be declared by the manufacturer. b) The mass per unit area of individual test specimens taken from a single strip across the roll shall not differ from the mean value for all the test specimens taken from the same strip by more than 10 % of the nominal value. 9 Glass content The described glass con

、tent shall be declared by the manufacturer and when tested as described in method 2 of BS 5734-1:1990 shall be within 4 % of the declared value. NOTEFor example, for a declared value of 25 % the permitted range is 21 % to 29 %. Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Fri Dec 01 14:56:17 GMT+00:0

、0 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 5734-4:1990 2 BSI 12-1999 10 Storage life The manufacturer shall state the storage life of the material when kept in the original unopened container under the conditions recommended by the manufacturer. Immediately after first opening the container, at any time

、within the stated storage life, the material shall be mouldable and shall comply with clause 7. 11 Marking Containers of material shall be marked clearly with the following information: a) manufacturers name or trade mark; b) material classification; c) batch number; d) mass per unit area (in g/m2);

、 e) glass content; f) number and date of this British Standard, i.e. BS 5734-4:19901).
