11、andards Committee, has been prepared at the request of the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association. Metal cans are a convenient, tamper-proof package for the provision of engine lubricants and similar products. They are supplied to the filler in the “open-top” condition, the top end being supplied
12、 separately for double seaming to the body after filling. It is a main objective of this standard that dimensions are specified in sufficient detail to facilitate interchangeability of components from more than one source without the necessity for closing machine adjustment. A British Standard does
13、not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. 16、rences The title of the publication referred to in this standard is given on the inside back cover. 3 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard the following definitions apply. 3.1 built-up can a can made up of at least two (but often more) components, the side wall being formed by shapi
17、ng and joining the edges 3.2 double seam a rolled, mechanically formed, joint comprising five interlocking “faces” or thicknesses of the two components thus jointed, and being two thicknesses of the one component and three thicknesses of the other 3.3 lock side seam a folded joint comprising four th
18、icknesses or “faces” (two of each component) truly interlocked. It may be sealed by solder, cement or other suitable means 4 Material 4.1 Body. When the side seam is soldered or welded the body material shall be tinplate in accordance with the requirements of BS 2920. When other jointing methods are
19、 used, tin free steel (e.g. electrolytically chromium coated steel) may be used as an alternative. The minimum nominal material thickness for the body shall be as shown in Table 1. 4.2 Ends. Top and bottom ends shall be manufactured from tinplate in accordance with the requirements of BS 2920, tin f
20、ree steel (e.g. electrolytically chromium coated steel) or aluminium or aluminium alloy. The minimum nominal material thickness for the ends shall be as given in Table 1 and Table 2. 5 Construction The can shall be of built-up construction with the body having a side seam which may be locked, welded
21、 or bonded. A lock side seam may be soldered or cemented. Ends shall be double seamed to the body, and a suitable lining compound provided inside the end flange to prevent leakage of the product. 6 Dimensions 6.1 Can. The can dimensions shall be as given in Table 1. 6.2 End. The end dimensions shall
22、 be as given in Table 2. 6.3 Closing machine chuck. The closing machine chuck dimensions shall be as given in Table 3. 7 Top end The top end may be plain, or incorporate pouring and vent holes sealed with aluminium pull-off strips or other tamper-proof closures. 8 Internal coatings If required by th
23、e purchaser, the internal surfaces of the body and ends may have corrosion resistant coatings. 9 Decoration 9.1 Body. If required by the purchaser, the body of the can may be lithographed externally. 9.2 Bottom end. If required by the purchaser, the bottom end may be lacquered externally to inhibit
24、corrosion. 9.3 Top end. If required by the purchaser, the top end may be lacquered externally to inhibit corrosion. The top end may be embossed to indicate the viscosity grade of the product or to give other relevant information. The top end may also be colour coated, lacquered or printed by arrange
