、tted without license from IHS -,-,- SUBJECT 1598 -Al- NOVEMBER 21, 2001 APPENDIX A REPORT OF THE OCTOBER 16 - 18,2001 STANDARDS TECHNICAL PANEL (STP) MEETING FOR LUMINAIRES WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS The STP Chair welcomed STP members, guests, and observers to the first meeting of the Standards Techn

、ical Panel for Luminaires, STP 1598. Self-introductions were made. STP PRESENTATION Don Snyder, UL Global Standards, presented a brief overview of ULs STP process as it relates to harmonization. This activity was important since UL 1598, Standard for Luminaires, is a binational standard harmonized w

、ith the luminaire requirements of Canada. A flowchart of the process, circulated at the meeting, is available for your information upon request. Please contact the STP Secretary for this chart. Don explained that the main function of STP 1598 is to be the consensus body for the approval and maintena

、nce of UL 1598 as an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard and to develop the US consensus position for new and/or revised requirements for the standard. The STP consensus decisions will be forwarded to the Luminaire Harmonization Committee (LHC) for final harmonization with Canada a

、s long as the LHC is an active harmonization committee. Any proposed revisions from either the STP or the LHC will be circulated to the other group before adoption into the binational standard. Don also explained that a trinational effort is underway and that a proposal to have the trinational commi

、ttee oversee the further harmonization with Canada and Mexico is being considered. ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE SECRETARY The STP Secretary explained that UL is in the process of converting and publishing all UL standards in SGML - Standard Generalized Markup Language. Consistent with this change, UL is p

、reparing to convert UL 1598 to this language as well. SGML is a markup language that defines a document by its structure and organization and not by its appearance and format. Therefore the conversion to SGML will impact the way the standard looks but not the technical content. Differences to the cu

、rrent document may appear in the font size, the spacing, indentation, and wrapping of text, and in the size of figures which when converted will be either half or full page. The conversion also eliminates the first Table of Contents, currently located on page 3. Once converted, it is expected that t

、he above stated changes will impact what page text appears on and will no longer exactly mirror with the Canadian Standards Association version. The biggest impact in the conversion to SGML will be in the appearance of the marking tables, Tables 17.1 .I, 17.1.4, 17.1.5, 17.1.6, and B.1. SGML prohibi

、ts the specific font sizes for markings from appearing within these tables. The Secretary proposed that we either rely on the sizes stated in Table 17.1.2 or possibly create a new graphic (figure) that shows the size of the different fonts specified for markings. This issue will be discussed by the

、LHC in the upcoming meeting in December 2001.
