、 following changes: a) A title change from Standard for Tests of Fire Resistive Grease Duct Enclosure AssembliestoStandard for Fire Resistive Grease Ducts, b) Removal of Condition B which represented non- ventilated combustible enclosures, c) A requirement for measurement of pressure and temperature

、 data at maximum 1 minute intervals to better refl ect current laboratory operations, and d) Editorial revisions such as correcting references and language clarifi cations. COMMENTS DUE: OCTOBER 26, 2006 1. FOR PRELIMINARY REVIEW ONLY: PROPOSED SECOND EDITION OF THE STANDARD FOR STANDARD FOR FIRE RE

、SISTIVE GREASE DUCTS, UL 2221 BACKGROUND This proposed new edition is for review and comment only (no ballot at this time). Comments received during this preliminary review period may not be provided with a response. After comments are considered by the STP task group that drafted the proposed new e

、dition, further action will be determined relative to whether or not the proposed new edition will be modifi ed and advanced to the next step (ballot and subscriber review). RATIONALE Proposal submitted by the STP task group on UL 2221. The STP task group on UL 2221 has prepared a draft new edition

、of UL 2221 in response to actions recommended during the March 23, 2004 and April 14, 2005 STP meetings, and recommendations made by the task group members. The task group was established at the April 14, 2005 STP meeting, and was charged with deleting the fi re tests in UL 2221 and adopting the tes

This assignment was also to include the development of an “inside-out, outside-in” wall test for rigid systems. The task group was also to develop a proposal that would be submitted by one of the task

、 group members to ASTM for removal of the hose stream from the E119 exposure described in ASTM E2336. Associated with these tasks, this group was to review the reports of the task groups established at the March 23, 2004 STP meeting to determine the application of their recommendations with respect

Consider the feasibility of a requirement addressing the visibility of markings after installation. “Inside-out” vs. “Outside-in” wall test: ASTM E2336 requires a 10 by 10 foot vertical sample be subjected to the fi re and hose stream tests def

、i ned in ASTM E119, Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. ASTM E2336 requires the test sample to be a reinforced steel plate with the insulation material secured to one face of the steel plate and the face with the insulation exposed to the furnace. This repres

、ents an “outside-in” condition. ASTM E119 requires unsymmetrical wall assemblies, such as specifi ed in ASTM E2336, be tested with either side exposed to the fi re and the report to indicate the side exposed to the furnace. When both sides are exposed to the fi re, the report is to indicate the fi r

、e resistance classifi cation applicable to each side. Several task group members believed the “inside-out” condition represented a more severe test condition and thus testing only the “outside-in” condition should be not be considered as being representative of fi re exposure to both faces. This con

、cern was confi rmed by data from fi re tests conducted on nominal 4 by 5 foot vertical samples and by requirements in the FTP Code published by the International Maritime Organization. The fi re test data are published in Report R15388 dated October 19, 2005. The FTP Code states, “In tests for A cla

、ss bulkheads for general application, it may be possible for approval to be granted on the basis of a single test only, provided that the bulkhead has been tested in the most onerous manner, which is considered to be with the insulation on the unexposed face and the stiffeners also on that side.” Wi

、th respect to a grease duct, this would be an “inside-out” condition. Further discussion with representatives of the code community confi rm this understanding that the ASTM E119 exposure specifi ed in ASTM E2336 only represents an “outside-in” condition. With the limited application of the ASTM E11

、9 exposure confi rmed, the task group addressed the need for an ASTM E119 exposure to be added in UL 2221. The “outside-in” exposure condition for the grease duct enclosure represents the grease duct located within a room that is in a post fl ash over fi re condition. The “outside-in” condition is i

、ntended to prevent the occurrence of a fi re within the grease duct during this post fl ash over fi re condition. However, the ability of the grease duct to contain a fi re when the fi re occurs inside the duct is addressed by the Internal Fire Test described in Section 8 of the UL 2221 August draft

、. With the understanding of the limited application of the ASTM E119 exposure and the presence of the internal fi re test in UL 2221, the task group decided not to revise UL 2221 to include an ASTM E119 fi re exposure on a 10 by 10 foot vertical sample as contained in ASTM E2336. Hose Stream Test: T

、he task group was requested to develop a proposal for ASTM E05, for submission by one or more of the task group members, to remove the hose stream test on the 10 by 10 foot vertical sample as required in ASTM E2336. The proposal was to be based upon the ability of a steel plate to withstand SEPTEMBE

、OT FOR OUTSIDE DISTRIBUTION the hose stream exposure. This proposal will be expanded to not only request deletion of the hose stream test but also the deletion of the fi re test on the 10 by 10 foot vertical sample for the reasons discuss in the section on the “Inside-out” vs. “Outside-in” wall test

、. Deletion of Fire Tests: The task group was charged with deleting fi re tests in UL 2221 and adopting the tests of ASTM E2336 by reference. The task group initially completed this task but, upon review of the resulting document, decided to retain the fi re tests within UL 2221. In addition, the tas

、k group decided to limit the scope of UL 2221 to grease ducts that are in compliance with the requirements of UL 1978, Grease Ducts. The grease ducts within the scope of UL 1978 are factory built using proprietary designs. This action was taken in response to revisions to the International Mechanica

、l Code (IMC) that occurred after the April 14, 2005 STP meeting. Revisions to the IMC includes an exception to Clause 506.3.10, Grease duct enclosure, which states, “The shaft enclosure provisions of this section shall not be required where a duct penetration is protected with a through-penetration

、fi restop system classifi ed in accordance with ASTM E814 and having an “F” and “T” rating equal to the fi re resistance rating of the assembly being penetrated and where a prefabricated grease duct enclosure assembly is protected on all sides from the point at which the duct penetrates a ceiling, w

、all or fl oor to the outlet terminal with a classifi ed and labeled prefabricated system specifi cally evaluated for such purposes in accordance with UL 2221.” The 2006 IMC contains a similar exception for enclosures intended for non-proprietary type grease ducts with reference made to ASTM E2336. M

、arking Requirements: Clarifi cation of the hourly rating is addressed in Clause 13.3.1 which states, “The fi re resistance rating of a fi re resistive grease duct shall be the minimum time for which compliance has been demonstrated for the conditions of acceptance defi ned in 13.1.3 and 13.1.4. Fire

、 resistance ratings shall only be determined for fi re resistive grease duct systems that have demonstrated compliance with the conditions of acceptance defi ned in 13.1.1, 13.1.2 and 13.1.5.” The need for a marking requirement pertaining to the traceability of manufacturing over a time period not e

、xceeding twelve months and a requirement regarding the visibility of the markings after installation has been deferred to UL 1978 because all grease ducts within the scope of UL 2221 must comply with the requirements of UL 1978.
