、ion of UL 879, the Standard for Components for Electric Signs (currently titled Electrode Receptacles for Gas-Tube Signs). A meeting of the Standards Technical Panel of UL for Electric Signs and Sign Components was held on June 24 and June 25, 2003 in Northbrook, Illinois. The purpose of the meeting

、 was to continue discussion of the proposed draft of UL 879. Attached as Appendices A and B are the STP membership rosters for STP 879 and STP 48 respectively. Please note that these rosters are a result of the finalization of the process for splitting the STP for Electric Signs and Sign Components

、into two STPs. Attached as Appendix C is information regarding Working Groups. Attached as Appendix D is a list of those who attended the meeting. Questions regarding interpretation of requirements should be directed to the responsible UL Staff. Please see Appendix E of this bulletin regarding desig

、a verbatim transcript of the discussion at the meeting, but is intended to record the significant features of those discussions. 1. Status of Current Working Groups The five task groups established at the May, 2003 meeting of STP 48 were assigned the following new completion dates. Task Group #I -Wo

、#4 -Working Group to Study Inorganic Materials NEW DATE - AUGUST 18,2003 Task Group #5 -Working Group Regarding Sign Components vs. Component Signs NEW DATE - OCTOBER 31,2003 2. Discussion of the Draft of UL 879 The intent of this meeting of the STP was to perform a paragraph-by-paragraph review of

、the fourth and fifth parts of the UL 879 draft standard. A number of discussions regarding the details of some requirements ensued. Many editorial and minor wording changes were suggested which will be reflected in the subsequent draft. Only major discussion items or conceptual changes will be cover

、ed in this report. It was determined that markings indicating conditions of acceptability, as presented in the draft, may need to be consolidated or rethought. All agreed that some form of conditions of acceptability needs to be in the standard. The Sign Accessory Manual (SAM) was adopted only as an

、 interim fix to this problem. There are practicality issues with special markings, however, and these need to be addressed. Additionally the exact hazards that are being dealt with through these markings need to be determined. A working group was formed to address this issue, see Appendix C. The cur

、rent paragraph 4.3.6.2 of the draft may need to include abnormal testing. Jeff Nimmer will conduct a study of the available data and come up with a recommendation for this paragraph. A draft of the revised paragraph, with a load recommendation, should be made available to the STP secretary within a

、month. There was significant discussion on the use of glazing in component parts centering around the possibility that glazing these products could produce a hazard. It was determined that, since there have been no field reports indicating that this is a problem, there is likely not a hazard involve

、ught up. There is an opinion by some members of the committee that caps actually create rather than reduce hazards. Randy Wright is to provide data on the efficacy of caps to the STP secretary. A representative of the research group at Underwriters Laboratories presented their findings on the ultrav

、iolet radiation created during energization. Essentially it was found that the amount of UV created is, in itself, insignificant but, when added to the ambient UV, and when the length of time of exposure is taken in to account, it could cause degradation of the components. There was no available cor

、relation between the presence of UV radiation and the length of life of the product. The group requested that there be a study to determine if degradation in the field is the result of ozone or electricity. Temperature requirements and test requirements have been increased to deal with degradation d

The group will make a formal request to have this testing performed. A task group was formed to develop a table to cov
