、NALE The Standard for Cord Sets and Power-Supply Cords, UL 817 contains requirements for adapter cord sets which are intended for use at locations such as construction sites. As such, these cord sets are subject to cord type and length requirements specific to use in these types of locations. Accord

、ingly, the length of such cord sets is restricted to 2 feet unless one of the following conditions is met: 1. On an adapter cord set having 2 single-outlet load fittings, the face of one of the load fittings is located no more than 2 feet from either the line or load fitting. 2. On an adapter cord s

、et having 3 single-outlet load fittings, the face of one load fitting is located no more than 2 feet from the face of the line fitting and the faces of the other load fittings are no more than 2 feet apart. 3. The adapter cord set employs in-line fittings. UL has decided to propose to revise the len

、gth requirements for adapter cord sets by permitting such cord sets to be up to 100 feet in length without meeting the criteria as described above. This will allow the power interconnection point at construction sites to be possibly located indoors affording protection from rain and UV exposure. In

、addition, the additional length may reduce the risk of the user connecting cord sets together end-to-end. UL has also received inquiries from manufacturers to permit adapter cord sets employing in-line fittings to be provided with No. 14 AWG cord for lengths up to 50 feet and No. 12 AWG for lengths

、over 50 but less than 100 feet. Presently, an adapter cord set employing in-line fittings is required to be provided with No. 12 AWG flexible cord for lengths up to 50 feet and No. 10 AWG for lengths over 50 but less than 100 feet. However, after further investigation, UL has decided to propose to p

、ermit adapter cord sets employing in-line fittings to be provided with No. 14 AWG cord for lengths up to 50 feet and No. 12 AWG for lengths over 50 but less than 100 feet. This change is consistent with the present requirements for adapter cord sets that do not employ in-line fittings. Paragraph 37.

、2 permits an attachment plug rated 15 A to be used in combination with a single outlet rated 20 A. However, in order to reduce the risk of overloading the attachment plug, UL has decided to propose to eliminate this type of construction. Also, UL proposes to revise the definition of adapter cord set

、 in paragraph 2.1 and add an additional marking requirement to paragraph 41 .I to clarify the intended use of these cord sets. COPYRIGHT Underwriters Laboratories Inc.
