1、A Brief Talk about Affect in English Language TeachingAbstract: With the development of humanistic psychology, the factors of affect in education are more and more attached importance to. Affect has played an important role in English language teaching. Humanistic psychology highlights that cognitio

2、n must be related to affect in order to promote the full development of people. However, for a long period of time, English language teaching commonly has paid much more attention to the aspect of cognition in our country but has ignored the effect of affect in English language learning. As teachers

3、 of English language of high school, how can we adjust ourselves to the new situation? We need to develop affect in English language teaching because it has a great effect on learning of students. So we can take measures of affect from three different perspectives. Firstly, take full advantage of ma

4、terials of text books because they reflect affect of experiences from human beings in social practice, they also contain authors affect and their intentions; Secondly, teachers should guide and deal with teaching seriously to make it develop positive function of affect; Thirdly, teachers should opti

5、mize teaching of affect by changing ourselves in class. Generally speaking, competence-oriented education is a kind of modern education which full-scale education is harmonious with individual education. The teachers of high school should instruct and influence students with affect in English langua

6、ge teaching.Key Words: English language teaching, Cognition, AffectIntroductionNow, with the publication of English Curriculum Criteria of Ministry of Education, teaching material of high school has been changed from the past, which was only based on grammar and mechanical drill. On the contrary, it

7、 has become a kind of reading matter which is scientific, interesting and practical. English language teaching which only lays stress on grammar and vocabulary can no longer adapt to todays students who are creative, quick-witted and have an expansive field of vision; it also cant accord with requir

8、ements of the revolution of curriculum and competence-oriented education. As a result, as an English teacher of high school, what should we do? Or how can we adjust ourselves to the new situation? We need to have the capability of organizing teaching in class besides have the necessary knowledge of

9、specialized subject. However, the key to success will be limited to the factors of affect in language teaching.I. The Defects of Traditional English Language TeachingFor a long period of time, English language teaching commonly has paid much more attention to the aspect of cognition in our country b

10、ut has ignored the effect of affect in English language learning. What we take seriously is practical value of knowledge, our goal of teaching is only within the grasp and application of knowledge. We always set affect aside. It is well known that the activities of teaching are bilateral. As teacher

11、s, if we only pay attention to our own professional work and contents of class while lacking empathy (“putting yourself in someone elses shoes”), then, it is difficult for a teacher to be successful in his or her language teaching.II. The Necessity and Significance of Affect in English Language Teac

12、hingWith the development of humanistic psychology, the factors of affect in education are more and more attached importance to. In English language teaching, affect refers to the emotion, feeling, mood and attitude and so on of learners during the process of learning, which directly influences their

13、 behavior and results of study. Humanistic psychology highlights that cognition must be related to affect in order to promote the full development of people, that is, affect complements cognition each other. The lack of positive affect will discount cognition of learners. There are two significant m

14、eanings of researching affect, one is to help improve the effect of language learning, the other is just for peoples full-scale development. Classroom is a place of activities for teachers and students, and also a social environment for their communication. In class, there are complex human relation

15、ships between different learners or between teachers and students. Different educational thoughts and cultural background will result in different relationships. The success of language teaching mainly relies on their harmony, cooperation and support. In the meanwhile, affect plays an important role

16、 in it, therefore, affect in class is not only about the atmosphere of class, but also the way of activities and the results of learning.III. How to Develop Affect in English Language TeachingTeaching material, teachers and students are three elementary factors in English language teaching. The cont

17、ents of text books of high school are various and close to our real life. Teachers can enlighten students to being moved to comprehension and experiencing affect from teaching material. Students are principal part of learning, at the same time, they are targets of teaching. They often show the follo

18、wing factors of affect on account of their not being mature: interest and motivation; the state of relationships between teachers and students; psychology of learning and atmosphere in class, etc. So, we can take necessary measures of affect from the three different perspectives. Firstly, many mater

19、ials of text books of high school reflect affect of experiences from human beings in social practice, they also contain authors good or bad affect and their intentions. As teachers, we can take advantage of positive and healthy factors of affect, and make them collect with English teaching purposely

20、 and consciously. The purpose of doing this is to let students accept affect as well as grasp English language. For example, in one Lesson Great Women, the author expresses the hard of success according to introducing some outstanding women in the world, which encourages students and makes them unde

21、rstand the importance of efforts and perseverance if they expect to succeed. It also lets students have sympathetic responses after learning. Secondly, teachers should guide and deal with teaching seriously to make it develop positive function of affect. For an instance, we can lead our students to

22、discussing questions in groups or having role-plays in class. Thus it is beneficial to creating a happy and free atmosphere and transferring their initiative and the sense of creativity. Surely, it also can strengthen the effect of learning and improve their application of language. Thirdly, our tea

23、chers should optimize teaching of affect by changing ourselves. In class, our love and passion have a good effect on English language learning of students. “Children dont care how much we know until they know how much we care.” Affect has a function of promotion, adjustment and consolidation in Engl

24、ish language teaching. Usually, teachers soft voices, smiling faces and understanding facial expressions will always bring a happy atmosphere into class. Students also will feel teachers are friendly, easy-going and trustworthy, they will not be afraid in class even if they have difficulty in learni

25、ng. Sometimes, the praises from teachers really can give students endless confidence and happiness, especially for those who are not very good at English learning. Teachers had better use more encouraging words to stimulate students, such as “good”, “perfect”, “well done” or we can say “Youve done a

26、 good job” after they answer a question or finish a task in class. We should try to discover the advantages of our students, which can cultivate their courage to go on with learning to much degree.ConclusionIn short, competence-oriented education is a kind of modern education which full-scale educat

27、ion is harmonious with individual education. As an English language teacher of high school, we should make an effort to bring forth new ideas, renew the conception of education continuously and fully recognize the great effect of affect on students learning and their healthy growth. We need to instr

28、uct and influence them with affect. On the one hand, we can foster students positive affect in teaching and learning, which is also helpful to their cognition of knowledge, on the other hand, it will make the sense of morality and beauty of students raised to a higher level to the full.References1.
