May be they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think they are above being supported by the town; but it often happens that they are
4、not above supporting themselves by dishonest means，which should be more disreputable. Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends, turning the old, return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and k
5、eep your thoughts. Three Days To SeeMost of us, however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant health, death is all but all unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. S
6、o we go about our petty tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life.I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would tea
7、ch him the joys of sound.Now and then, I have tested my seeing friends to discover what they see. Recently I was visited by a very good friend who had just returned from a long walk in the woods, and I asked her what she had observed. “Nothing in particular,” she replied. I might have been incredulo
8、us had I not been accustomed to such reposes, for long ago I became convinced that the seeing see little.How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me through mere touch. I feel the d
9、elicate symmetry of a leaf. I pass my hands lovingly about the smooth skin of a silver birch, or the rough, shaggy bark of a pine. In the spring I touch the branches of trees hopefullyin search of a bud, the first sign of awakening Nature after her winters sleep. I feel the delightful, velvety textu
10、re of a flower, and discover its remarkable convolutions; and something of the miracle of Nature is revealed to me. Occasionally, if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently on a small tree and feel the happy quiver of a bird in full song. I am delighted to have the cool waters of a brook rush th
11、ought my open finger. To me a lush carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug. To me the page ant of seasons is a thrilling and unending drama, the action of which streams through my finger tips. A Tribute To The Dog1. The best friend a man has in this
12、 world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith.2. The money that a man has he may los
13、e. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A mans reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon
14、 our heads. The one absolute, unselfish friend a man may have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog.3. A mans dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground w
15、hen the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he can be near his masters side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer. He will lick the sores and wounds that come in the encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a pri
16、nce.4. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher
17、privilege than that of accompanying him to guard him against danger, to fight against his enemies.
