1、精品翻译欣赏THREE DAYS TO SEEHelen KellerAll of us have read thrilling stories in which the hero had only a limited and specified time to live. Sometimes as short as twenty four hours. But always we were interested in discovering just how the doomed man chose to spend his last days or his last hours. I sp

2、eak, of course, of free man who have a choice, not condemned criminals whose sphere of activities is strictly delimited.Such stories set us thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstances. What events, what experiences, what associations should we crowd into those last hours as mor

3、tal beings? What happiness should we find in reviewing the past, what regrets?Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow. Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life. We should live each day with a gentleness, a vigor, and a k

4、eenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretches before us in the constant panorama of more days and months and years to come. There are those, of course, who would adopt the epicurean motto of 'Eat, drink, and be merry, ' but most people would be chastened by the certainty o

5、f impending death.Most of us, however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our pett

6、y tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life.The same lethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of all our faculties and senses. Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation apply to those who h

7、ave lost sight and hearing in adult life. But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties. Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily, without concentration, and with little appreciation. It is the same old story o

8、f not being grateful for what we have until we lose it, of not being conscious of health until we are ill.I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of

9、 sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound.At times my heart cries out with longing to see all these things. If I can get so much pleasure from mere touch, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight. Yet, those who have eyes apparently see little. The panorama of color and action which fi

10、lls the world is taken for granted. It is human, perhaps, to appreciate little that which we have and to long for that which we have not, but it is a great pity that in the would of light the gift of sight is used only as a mere convenience rather than as a means of adding fullness to life.Oh, the t

12、的最后一天来过,也许是一种极好的生活准则。这种态度会使生命的价值印章有突出,使我们以优雅的风度、旺盛的精力和高度珍异的心情度过每一天;而当我们觉得岁月延绵不断,来日方长时,往往失掉这种态度。当然,有人会因而 奉行亨乐主义的信条,一味吃喝玩乐,但更多的人却因为行将就木而变得严肃纯洁。我们大多数人把生命视若等闲。只有聋子才珍惜听觉,只有盲人才领悟光明所赐给人们 的难以计数地幸福。成年时未受到损伤的人却很少运用他们的天赋。他们视而不见,充耳不闻,对其所闻漫不经心,毫无鉴赏珍惜之意。事情往往是这样,失却之物,方知珍惜;生了 病才知道健康之可贵。我时常在想,倘若让每一个人在刚刚成年的某个时期尝一点苦头,

14、 bookshop can be most enjoyable. whether you are a book-lover or merely there to buy a book as a prese nt. You may even have en tered the shop just to find shelter from a sudde n shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. The desire to pick up a book with

15、an attractive dust-jacket is irresistible, although this method of select ion ought not to be followed, as you might end up with a rather dull book. You soon become absorbed in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time there and must dash

16、 off to keep some forgotte n appo in tme nt without buying a book, of course.This opport unity to escape the realities of everyday life is, perhaps, the main attract ion of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can wande

17、r round such places to your heart s content. If it is a good shop, no assista nt will approach you with the in evitable greeti ng:Can I help you, sir?” Youtneyd nanything you don t want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have fini shed brows ing. Then, and only the

Of course, you may want to find out where a particular sect ion is ,but whe n he has led you there, the assista nt should go away politely and look as if he is not in terested in selli ng a sin gle book.You have to be careful not to be attracted by the variety of boo

19、ks in a bookshop. It is very easy to en ter the shop look ing for a book on, say, ancient coins and to come out carry ing a book about modern weapons something which has only vaguely interested you up till then. This volume on the subject, however, happe ned to be so well illustrated and the part of

20、 the text you read proved so in teresti ng, that you just had to buy it. This sort of thi ng can be very dan gerous. Apart from running up a huge acco unt, you can waste a great deal of time wan deri ng room sect ion to secti on. Booksellers must be both Ion g-sufferi ng and in dulge nt.There is a s

21、tory which can illustrate this. A medical student had to read a text-book which was far too expe nsive for him to buy. He could n t obta in it from the library and the only copy he could find was in his bookshop. Every after noon, therefore, he would go along to the shop and read a little of the boo

22、k at a time. One day, however, he was dismayed to find the book missing from its usual place and was about to leave whe n he no ticed the owner of the shop beck oning to him. Expect ing to be told off, he went towards him. To his surprise, the owner poin ted to the book, which was tucked away in a c

27、eveloping at breakneck speed, the economy is going global and research in life sciences has also taken off, do the thoughts of Confucius and Mencius still have a place in society?The answer is yes. In terms of value, the core teachings of the two great minds are neither bounded by time nor space.It

28、is impossible to go into all the key thoughts of Confucius and Mencius here.I shall just touch on Confucius' simplest explanation of his concept of 仁” o“r "ren" (this has been translated as benevolence, love, kindness and humanity, etc) and Mencius' notion that "Man's natu

29、re is good at birth".It was said that Fan Chi, a student of Confucius, once asked the master what "ren" meant. Confucius' reply: "It means to love other people."Mencius, on the other hand, argued that "Man's nature is good at birth" because compassion is co

30、mmon to mankind. Everyone is capable of conduct in line with "ren", those who are not would cease to be members of humankind.Now, let us ask ourselves a simple question: "Could the benefit of such thoughts possibly be limited by time and space?"Confucius advocated the importance

31、to love other people. Is it not apparent that this idea is valuable and useful in helping people to live a life filled with happiness and warmth?Could this idea be relevant and useful only in ancient times and have lost its relevance and value in the 21st century?Could it be applicable only to peopl

32、e in the East and not people in the West?The answer to both questions is of course "No". And we can draw some useful conclusions from here.Since it is true that love is necessary for happiness and warmth in life, this makes the need for people to love and care for one another an idea that

35、in, we need only to ask ourselves a simple question: "Are values such as compassion, humanity and human dignity not valuable and beneficial?"And by the same token, these values are as much relevant in the past as they are today. They also apply to both people in the East and in the West. I

36、n short, they are timeless and beyond the constraint of space.By and large, core teachings of the two venerable sages have stood the test of time, and they will probably always have a role in human society.We have indeed progressedinto a new era, but so long as we are still keen in our pursuit to le

38、都加以叙述。 就姑且只以孔子对他 的所谓“仁”的一个最简单的解释, 和孟子认为人性是善的一个最为人所知的指 证,作例子来说说罢。有一次孔子的学生樊迟问孔子什么是“仁”, 孔子回答说“仁”就是“能够 爱人”。孟子指证人性是善的时候说人都有“恻隐之心”, 因而都有“仁”的行 为。否则,就不是人。我们试想想看, 孔、孟这种思想的用处, 有时间和空间的限制吗?孔子大力 鼓励人要好好的去爱人。这种思想,对营造人类生活的幸福、温馨等等,难道还 不是有价值的、有用的吗?难道这只是在古代才有价值、才有用,在进入 21 世纪的现代就没有价值、 没有用了吗?难道只是对东方地域的人, 才有价值、 才有用,对西方地域

39、的人就 没有价值、没有用了吗?这些问题的答案都不应是“没用”,而相反是“有用”的。这样,贝U :、 既然肯定人类生活的幸福、温馨,是需要的,是须要有爱来营造,要人能爱人才 行的,那么,人要好好的去爱人,便成为是营造幸福、温馨的人类生活的有价值 的、有用的思想了。二、既然肯定不只是古代人,纵令是现代人要有幸福、温馨的生活,也是要 有爱来营造,要人能爱人才行的,那么,人要好好的去爱人,便成为不受时间限 制,时代不同而还是一样有用的思想了。三、既然肯定不只是东方地域的人,纵令是西方地域的人要有幸福、温馨的 生活,也是要有爱来营造,要人能爱人才行的,那么,人要好好的去爱人,便也 成为不受空间限制,地域

40、不同而还是一样有用的思想了。孟子极力激励人要大发恻隐之心,做仁爱的行为,表现成有人格的人,以便 能构成一个真正是“人”的社会。我们又试想想看,孟子的这种思想一一人要有人格,能恻隐、能仁爱,构成 真是“人”的社会一一不也是有价值的、 有用的吗?不也是不只在古代,纵令在 现代,要人有人格,要构成真是“人”的社会,也须要有而一样是有价值的,有 用的吗?不也是不只对东方地域的人,纵令是对西方地域的人,要人有人格,要构成 真是“人”的社会,也须要有而一样是有价值的、有用的吗?所以,这些问题的答案,也都是在肯定孟子的这种思想是“有用”的。 它是 不受时、空的限制,是不论古今、不分东西的有用于任何时、空的。孔子和孟子的很多思想要点,大抵就都是这样的极具不朽的价值而永恒有用 的。如今,人类的新世纪虽然来临了,然而,人如果还要追求真正是人”的生活、是 人”的社会的确实获致与享有,则孔、孟的思想恐怕仍无例外,还是继续有用的罢!
