3、mental reasons for human beings to learn language is to exchange information with others. English learning is a kind of synthetically ability improvement; generally it includes listening; speaking; reading and writing. Among the four basic skills, listening is always regarded as the most important s

4、kill; its the foundation for us to communicate. According to the research that W.M.River and M.S.Temperly had done, listening skills occupy about 45% when we do social activities. It is the most important skills among listening skills; speaking skills; reading skills and writing skills. Through inve

5、stigation the author find that non-English majors in Ankang University have many problems in learning listening. These problems are both caused by students learning strategies and the atmosphere in Ankang University. This thesis analyzed the problems according to the survey on the problems, and then

6、 tried to find the possible solutions for the problems. The aim of this paper is to explore how to use effective and correct approaches to guide students in their process of listening learning and training, so as to improve college students listening comprehension. 7、English majors; the studying of English listening; problems; solutions探究提高安康学院学生英语听力水平的策略罗正杰(安康学院外语系,陕西安康,725000) 摘要:语言是人类参与交际活动的工具,人类学习语言的目的是能跟别人交换信息。英语学习是一门综合技能的学习,它大体包括了听、说、读、写这四种基本技能。其中,听力是最基本的语言技能,是进行交流的基础。根据里弗斯和坦铂利(W. M. River and M. S. Temperly) 的统计, “听”在交际活动中所占比重45%, 是听、说、读、写四种基本技能中所占比重最大的。但

13、1. Introduction There are mainly four skills in English learning, they are listening, speaking, reading and writing. Through the surveys taken by educators both native and international, listening is proved to be the most important one among the four. Foreign linguists analyzed the statistical data

14、they have got, and drawn a conclusion that when we communicate with others, listening occupies about 45% of the total time, speaking occupies about 30%, reading occupies about 11%, and writing only occupies about 9%. But through the research the author taken in Ankang University, the author found th

15、at students in Ankang University have many problems in their process of listening learning and training. These problems are caused by three sidesschool, teachers and the students themselves. In order to improve Ankang University students listening level, this paper will first discuss the importance

16、of listening, and the current situation of listening learning in Ankang University; then introduced some theories concerning listening learning; finally give the possible solutions to these problem accordingly.1.1 The importance of English listening As technology advances and trade and exchanges bet

17、ween countries increase, our world is becoming smaller and smaller, and some people begin to call our world a global village. In order to communicate with people all over the world, English has become an international language. Nowadays, there are over one billion people learning English all over th

18、e world, and about 90% of the important electronic information is stored in English (Hasman, 2000). So, it is becoming more and more important to understand spoken English in many situations such as face-to-face, on the telephone, in business meetings, lectures, speeches, television, and so on.As is

19、 known to all, China has entered into the WTO and has held the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. successfully. China is now in great need of many different kinds of professionals with a super level of English language proficiency, and English has become a craze nowadays. I

20、n order to let college students adjust the globalization, Department of Higher Education in China appeal college students to learn English, and hope college students can cultivate their comprehensive ability to use English. The fact is that the basic four skills in English learning- listening, speak

21、ing, reading and writing have been greatly improved on the part of Chinese students. However, in Ankang University, the four skills have not developed at the same rate. For most students listening and speaking remain the most difficult skills to master. But foreign linguists analyzed the statistical

22、 data they have got, and drawn a conclusion that when we communicate with others, listening occupies about 45% of the total time, speaking occupies about 30%, reading occupies about 11%, and writing only occupies about 9%. Besides listening plays a key role in second language acquisition. But in the

23、 past English learners do not pay much attention to listening and speaking, the result is that they learned English for a life time but still deaf and dumb.The author sees the importance of listening from the following reasons. First, the function of language is communication, listening skills is an

24、 important aspect of peoples communicative competence, Carl Weaver said, Listening is the core of the communication activities.” Second, learn a language from the language itself, if you do not have the listening ability, the language skills would not be complete, it will have a direct impact on our

25、 communication and it will also severely restrict the development of other language skills. Third, With the rapid development of science and technology, English language teaching methods and learning conditions have improved greatly, English radio and television programs, a wide range of audio and v

26、ideo materials in English provide learners with more learning opportunities and more convenient means of learning, to master listening is not only the purpose of learning English, but also an important skill that learners should have if they want to learn good English. Fourth, in China English is le

27、arned by students in all the colleges, its one of the most important subjects that is learned in college. College students learning English is not only because it is an international language but also because they need to learned it well to pass examinations such as CET-4, CET-6, TEM-4 etc. In some

28、colleges, if students fail to pass CET-4 or TEM-4, they may cant get their degree. And Ankang University is a good example. So, learning English well is extremely important for college students. Listening is the most important skills in English learning, and it also plays an important role in examin

29、ations such as CET-4, and CET-6. From the survey that have carried out, educators find that listening accounts for 25%-30% of the total points. If a college stud

31、ent does not have a good listening, how can they pass those exams? How can they get their degree? How can they communicate with foreigners who speak English? Fifth, English is an international language. As the world becomes “smaller” and “smaller”, people need to communicate with more and more forei

32、gners, but different people from different countries speak different languages, in order to solve this problem, some people even want to create a new kind of language used by people all around, but for all sort of reasons they failed. English has become a language used internationally, so it is nece

33、ssary for college students to grasp English, so as to communicate with foreigners. Sixth, English is the “language” of computer, the computer programs are nearly all written in English. Since computer plays a more and more important role in our daily life, its necessary for us to know something abou

34、t English. Listening is one of the most important parts of English studying, so we need to learn it. 1.2 Current situation of English listening learning in Ankang UniversityIn order to gain the first-hand information, and guarantee the authenticity of this thesis, a survey has been taken in Ankang U

35、niversity. This thesis mainly used interviews and questionnaires to collect information. All together 500 students and 15 teachers were involved, they were surveyed randomly. Totally 500 papers have been sent out and 485 pieces were collected back, the efficiency rate has reached 97%, and 350 studen

36、ts and 15 teachers were interviewed. The author made an in-depth and detailed analysis on the survey results, and got some useful data. From the data of the survey, the author got to know how students in Ankang University learn English listening in their daily life, and the actual situation of Ankan

37、g University.1.2.1The time they spend on learning English listeningFrom the data collected, the result is really surprising. Among the 500 students who were interviewed, about 15% of them never do English listening in their daily life, most of these students are boys, they said they dont like Englis

38、h at all, and they even cant understand the simple English conversation. They think that learning English is a torture for them. About 45% of them sometimes listen to English, but they mainly listen to English songs. They rarely listen to English news, such as, Voice of America and BBC. They dont li

39、sten to English materials on their text books, for they think its bored. They listen English songs is because it makes them very “cool”, and they think it makes them seem very “popular”. About 28% of them listen to English songs and listen to the listening materials on their books, but they do not l

40、isten to English everyday, they only listen to them before exams, such as, CET-4 and TEM-4. Only 12% of them listen English more than 3 times a week, they do that because they want to pass CET-4 and TEM-4, and because they want to get a Masters degree after graduation. As the old saying goes “practi

41、ce makes perfect”, because majority of the students in Ankang University dont practice English listening very often, their English listening is poor.1.2.2The listening materials which students in Ankang University listened toSuitable listening materials have great help for students, but the survey s

42、hows that the listening materials which the students in Ankang University listened are not suitable. About 80% of those who listen to English, they mainly listen to the listening materials from examination papers. Whats the reason? The reason is that in Ankang University, if students failed to pass

43、examinations such as CET-4 or TEM-4, they may cant get their degree. In order to get their degree, they have no choice but to listen to listening materials from CET-4 or TEM-4. Its a common phenomenon in some colleges in China. The other 18% of the students listen to English songs; from the intervie

44、w the author find they do that just for relaxation. Only 2% of the students listen to English news. But a good thing is that nearly all of them watch English movies, its a good way to improve their listening ability. 1.2.3Students attitude towards English listeningHere is the data gets from the stud

45、ents in Ankang University. About 10% of the students think English is a “burden”, they think its totally unnecessary for them to learn English, because once they graduate from school, they will never use it again, They just dont have the interests to learn English. The other 90% of the students inve

46、stigated think English listening is difficult, and the reasons given by them are as follows:First, different speakers produce the same sounds in different ways, e.g. different dialects and accents, stresses, rhythms, intonations, mispronunciations, etc; The survey shows that students in Ankang Unive

47、rsity rarely listen to various of listening materials in their daily life, without enough practice, they find its difficult to understand foreigners in their real life communication. Second, the listener has little or no control over the speed of the input of the spoken materials in their examination papers;Third, Spoken material is often heard only once and in most cases, the listener cannot go back and listen again. It is especially true in examinations such as CET-4 and CET-6.Fo
