、w tool database (mdb) 1 Setting up a new tool database Creating a new tool database (mdb) We will open the tool database for the first time using the hyperMILL toolbar. To do this, click the Tool database button. If no tool databases have been created yet, the dialog appears as below, containing the

、 text: No Active Database. We will now create a new (blank) database by choosing File New. hyperMILL - 4 - Tool Database in hyperMILL hyper CAD Create tool class Opening an existing tool database2 If the tool database is successfully created, the path where the database is stored is displayed in the

、 top line. You can also view the preconfigured tool types in the Tools tab. Opening an existing tool database Existing databases are opened by clicking File Open. 2Create tool class We will begin by adding several tool classes. The tool classes can be viewed on the Tools tab. hyperMILL - 5 - Tool Da

、tabase in hyperMILL 2 Create tool class Opening an existing tool database You can create a new tool class by placing the cursor over an existing tool class, right-clicking (this opens the shortcut menu) and selecting New Tool Class. You can also do this by clicking in the New Items toolbar. An input

、 form now appears on the screen. Enter the name in the top field. In the field directly below it, you select the tool type that comes closest to the tool class. In this example, we will be selecting Drill Tool. You can optionally enter a comment if you want. Confirm with OK. Once the tool class is c

、reated, a new tool type (Centre Drill) appears in the selection list. hyperMILL - 6 - Tool Database in hyperMILL hyper CAD Create tool Opening an existing tool database3 3 Create tool You can create a new tool by moving the cursor over an existing tool class, right-clicking (this opens the shortcut

、menu) and clicking New Tool. You can also do this by clicking the icon on the New Items toolbar. An input form now appears on the screen. Enter the name in the top field. In the field directly below it, select the tool class under which the tool is saved. In the bottom field, choose either Metric or

、 Inch as the Measurement System. After confirming with OK, an input screen for the newly created tool appears on the screen. The full input screen is shown below. Each field in this screen is described in detail in the following pages. hyperMILL - 7 - Tool Database in hyperMILL 3 Create tool Opening

、 an existing tool database The key entries are the Length and Diameter fields and these are highlighted in yellow as shown to the left. You also need to enter the Tip Angle. On the right of the entry mask, this is displayed in the Geometry Preview . You can also select the Shank option. With this op

、tion, you can define a widened or tapered shank. hyperMILL - 8 - Tool Database in hyperMILL hyper CAD Create tool Technology3 You can optionally enter a new Chamfer Length. Technology In the Technology section, you can enter other data that is analysed according to need / use of the tool. Plunge Ang

Cutting Direction Cutting Length Spindle Orientation In the Geometry section, you can save your entries by right-clicking and choosing Save As Default from the shortcut menu. Workpiece materials To view the Technology values such as spindle speed and feed

、rate, you first need to specify the workpiece materials and, where applicable, cutting materials. To do this, we define several workpiece materials so that material-dependent technology data can be imported into hyperMILL. hyperMILL - 9 - Tool Database in hyperMILL 3 Create tool Workpiece materials

、To open this window, click in the Edit toolbar Or right-click in the Technology field and select New from the shortcut menu. The Workpiece Materials input form now appears on the screen. You can create a new material in this window by right- clicking and selecting New from the shortcut menu. hyperMI

、LL - 10 - Tool Database in hyperMILL hyper CAD Create tool Assigning materials to the tool 3 To enter the name, cutting speed factor (Vc) or comment, double-click the required field. This activates the field where you type in the number. You do not have to enter anything in the Comment field. The li

、st may contain any number of materials. You are free to use any characters (numbers or letters) for the name (examples: S42CrMo4V or 1.7225 or ?). Assigning materials to the tool You can assign material-dependent technology data to a single tool or a group of tools (tool classes, tool types or measu

、rement systems). In the example below, we are assigning the data to a single tool. As described above, we open the workpiece materials list for the tool to be linked with the material. To do this, we right-click the required material. The material is now added as you can see in the screenshot below.

、 hyperMILL - 11 - Tool Database in hyperMILL 3 Create tool Assigning materials to the tool You can naturally assign as many materials to the tool as required. However, technology data is still missing as shown below. Feedrate (FX), Infeed (FZ), Spindle speed S(n), F/edge (fz) = feedrate per edge of

、tool, T = Tool life To obtain the value for the Feedrate FX, we need to create a formula. To do this, we double-click the required value (FX 0) to be to be assigned to the formula. Then we open the Formulas selection dialog. You can either select a default formula or one you created yourself, e.g.,

、for the Z value with a factor of 3. We assign the formula fF (fz+z+n). hyperMILL - 12 - Tool Database in hyperMILL hyper CAD Create tool Assigning materials to the tool 3 We add the formula fFinfeed to FZ Infeed. We also assign the formula fS to Speed S (n). After we set the formula, the value is ca

、lculated immediately since all of the required data is available. The value Vc for the cutting speed factor is automatically imported from the workpiece materials. We enter the value for F/Edge (fz) (feedrate per tooth) directly in the field. Double-click the field to open it and enter the required

、feedrate. You can also enter a tool time (T). This is only for informational purposes and is not analysed. hyperMILL - 13 - Tool Database in hyperMILL 3 Create tool Assigning cutting materials to the tool As soon as we have entered F/Edge (fz), the values for FX and FZ are calculated. This requires,

、 that the formula and Cutting edges (z) have already been defined. Entries need to be made for each material that is assigned to the tool. Assigning cutting materials to the tool You can also add a Cutting Material to the technology data. Here you can employ a speed factor to calculate the cutting s

、peed for a technology data record by multiplying it by the cutting speed factor of the workpiece material. One such example involves tools equipped with plates that can be stocked with different cutting materials. To do this, simply click . hyperMILL - 14 - Tool Database in hyperMILL hyper CAD Creat

、e tool Assigning cutting materials to the tool3 We can create as many Cutting materials / Factors as required in the cutting materials list. We create these in the same way as with workpiece materials. We assign the cutting material to the material by double-clicking the cutting materials field or r

、ight- clicking to open the shortcut menu. Once the cutting material is added to the material list, the technology data is also automatically transferred with it. You may also enter a Comment for the tool. hyperMILL - 15 - Tool Database in hyperMILL 4 Import and modify tool geometry from an external

、file Assigning cutting materials to the tool Our tool is now finished. Other options are available for defining the tool geometries. An explanation on how to do this is provided below. The tool you have created is displayed, with its main attributes (diameter / length), in the tool browser. 4Import

、and modify tool geometry from an external file You are given the option of importing a tool geometry or an entire tool from an external file (DXF or OMX). The current version of hyperMill (version 9) does not support tool geometry visualisation within hyperMill. The upcoming hyperMill 9.5 will allow

、 you to display such geometries. ! At the moment, you can only read and load the relevant values from the imported geometry. The geometries for the holder and head can be imported. A more detailed explanation will be provided in the following chapter. hyperMILL - 16 - Tool Database in hyperMILL hype
