FOREWORD (This foreword is not a part of ANSI A156.8). -,-,- 3 The general classification of builders hardware includes a wide variety of items which are divided into several c

、ategories. To recognize this diversity, a sectional classification system has been established. Overhead Holders is one such section and this Standard is the result of the collective efforts of members of the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association who manufacture this product. The total Product

、 Standards effort is, therefore, a collection of sections, each covering a specific category of items. Performance tests have been established to insure safety, security and stability to which the public is entitled. There are no restrictions on design except as required to suit the type of product

、desired. The BHMA recognizes that errors will be found, items will become obsolete, and new products, methods and material will be developed. With this in mind, the Association plans to update, correct and revise these Standards on a regular basis. In most cases products have been described in grade

、 levels related to performance. Grade classifications indicate levels only within their own product category. Choice of grade and specific product should be made on the basis of utility, aesthetics, security objectives and end use desired. The BHMA numbers, which indicate types of hardware do not id

In actual usage, results vary because of installation, maintenance and environmental conditions. 1.2 Definitions 1.2.

、1 Overhead Holder A device surface mounted or concealed at the top of a door with a connecting arm attached to the door frame. It holds a door in a predetermined open position or positions and also limits the opening up to 110 degrees. 1.2.2 Overhead Stops A device surface mounted or concealed at th

、e top of a door with a connecting arm attached to the door frame which only limits the opening travel of a door. 1.3 General Requirements 1.3.1 SI Units All dimensions are expressed first in US units with SI unit (metric) equivalents given in parentheses. SI units are approximate. 1.3.2 Tolerances A

、ll values which do not carry specific tolerances or are not marked maximum or minimum shall have the following tolerances: Number of cycles shall be minimum. Linear dimensions shall be + 1/16 in. (1.6 mm). Pounds or pound force shall be + 2%. A tolerance of + 2 degrees F shall be applied to temperat

All g

、rades of overhead holders and stops are required to meet the applicable finish tests described in Section 3. 2. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS 2.1 Test Procedures 2.1.1 All tests shall be performed on doors 36 in x 84 in x 1-3/4 in (914 mm x 2134 mm x 44 mm) of either wood or metal and weighing 150 lbs (6

、8 kg). Use metal frames of heavy enough construction to withstand the abuse required by these tests. The center of gravity of the weighted door shall be 18 in (457 mm) from the center line of hinge or pivot. 2.1.2 Means for mechanically opening the door to the stop position and releasing and closing

、 the door shall be provided for the tests. Opening speed shall be 0 to 90 degrees in 3 to 6 seconds. 2.1.3 Doors shall be hung on heavy weight ball bearing hinges or pivots meeting Grade 1 requirements of ANSI/BHMA A156.1 for Butts and Hinges. Force required to overcome friction or out of balance co

、ndition shall be a 1/2 lbf (2.2 N) or less, measured in accordance with paragraph 2.1.4. -,-,- 6 2.1.4 All forces shall be applied to the door and readings shall be taken at a point 30 in (762 mm) from center line of hinge or pivot, at a height of 40 in (1016 mm) from the bottom of the door. 2.1.5 A

、ll tests shall be conducted using a single stop or holder. Failure of the stop or holder to complete or meet the requirements of any part of the test shall constitute failure of test. 2.1.6 The Force Tests (2.3) shall be performed following completion of the Cycle Tests (2.2) 2.1.7 No lubrication sh

Door

、s shall be mechanically pushed or pulled into hold open, and pulled or pushed back to a closed position for the requirements specified in 2.2.6. Adjustment shall be checked at 1/2 the total cycles required and readjusted to the 15 lbf (67 N), if necessary. At the end of the test, the force required

、to close the door shall be not less than a 10 lbf (44 N) nor more than a 20 lbf (89 N), and shall be capable of readjustment to a 15 lbf (67 N). 2.2.2 Single Point Non-Adjustable Hold Open Types Door holders shall be capable of withstanding a minimum of a 15 lbf (67 N) perpendicular to the door in t

、he direction of closing without releasing at the start of the test. Doors shall be mechanically pushed or pulled into hold open and pulled or pushed back to a closed position for the requirements specified in 2.2.6. At the end of one half the cycling period, they shall have a minimum holding force o

、f a 10 lbf (44 N). At the conclusion of the cycle test they shall not have lost more than 50% of the original holding force. 2.2.3 Positive Type Holders less Automatic Release Feature Doors shall be mechanically pushed or pulled into hold open and mechanically released and closed for the requirement

、s specified in 2.2.6. 2.2.4 Friction Slide Type Holders Frictional holders shall be adjusted to resist an 8 lbf (36 N) and readjusted to an 8 lbf (36 N) at the end of each 10,000 cycles. At the end of the test, holder shall be capable of readjustment to resist an 8 lbf (36 N) without the necessity o

、f renewing the friction unit. Apparatus shall operate at a 15 second cycle 2 seconds. Total cycle test for the friction holders is specified in 2.2.6. 2.2.5 Non-Friction Slide or Stop Only Types These types that are without the hold open feature are required only to complete the cycle test in the ap

、plicable grade. If they are of the same construction as single point or friction holders, they need not be tested separately. 2.2.6 Cycle Requirements Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade3 250,000 100,000 50,000 -,-,- 7 2.3 Force Tests 2.3.1 Door stops or holders shall be opened to the stop position and a static f
