、967. BS 1133 was originally issued in December 1943 and was intended primarily to give guidance on the packaging of Service and other Government supplies. In practice, however, the code was used not only by Government departments and contractors, but also by civilian packers and accordingly it was a

、mended to suit commercial requirements. The Parts were later issued separately and new Sections were added as necessary. Since Section 7 covered many different types of packaging materials it was decided to subdivide it into a number of separately published Subsections. This Subsection of BS 1133 pr

、ovides information on composite containers manufactured from fibrous based materials in conjunction with other materials. The packaging code now consists of the following Sections all of which are published separately with the exception of Sections 1 to 3 which are published in one volume. Sections

、1 to 3: Introduction to packaging; Section 4: Mechanical aids in package handling; Section 5: Protection against spoilage of packages and their contents by micro-organisms, insects, mites and rodents; Section 6: Temporary protection of metal surfaces against corrosion (during transport and storage);

、 Section 7: Paper and board wrappers, bags and containers; Subsection 7.1: Wrapping papers; Subsection 7.2: Bags and envelopes; Subsection 7.3: Cartons and boxes; Subsection 7.4: Fibreboard drums; Chapter 7.5: Fibreboard cases; Subsection 7.6: Moulded pulp packaging; Subsection 7.7: Composite contai

、containers having sidewalls of fibrous based material, e.g. paper or paperboard and ends of a different material. NOTEThe title of the publication referred to in this standard is given on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Subsection of BS 1133 the definitions given in BS

、3130-2 apply, together with the following. gang label a multiple label applied convolutely to a length of the tube which is subsequently cut into unit container lengths. 3 Materials and construction 3.1 Sidewalls The sidewalls of composite containers are normally made of paper or paperboard and usua

、lly consist of a number of plies, the number and thickness of these plies depending on the method of construction and the intended purpose of the container. Materials such as films, metal foil, lacquer, waxes and other treatments can be incorporated in the walls to provide water resistance, oil resi

、stance or such specific properties as may be required for a particular product. The sidewalls are normally constructed by winding paper or paperboard to form a tube. The method of winding may be either convolute, i.e. straight winding from a single reel with each layer superimposed on the previous o

、ne until the required thickness is obtained or spiral, i.e. spiral winding from two or more reels to obtain the required thickness with each layer covering the spiral butt joint of the previous layer. Convolute winding is used to produce both circular and non-circular tubes whereas spiral winding is

、 used only to produce a continuous circular tube. 3.2 Ends The ends and closures of composite containers are normally made from tinplate, blackplate, aluminium or plastics. 4 Types of composite container The following are the more commonly used types of composite container. a) Sealed type (see Figur

、e 1). One end is left open and is seamed on after filling. It is essential that the packer has the requisite machinery available for this closure. b) Slip lid type (see Figure 2). c) Lever lid type (see Figure 3). This type can also be made with a diaphragm inserted under the lid ring. The diaphragm

、 can be made of paper or foil providing a tamper evident seal and additional protection against moisture. The container is then supplied with the bottom left open and it is seamed on after filling by the packer. d) Snap-in lid type (see Figure 4). e) Plug lid or push-in lid type (see Figure 5). NOTE

、One end is left open for filling and seamed on when full. A

、thread can be formed on the board of the sidewall to accept a screw cap, or the thread may be in the form of a metal rim crimped on to the sidewall. g) Butt jointed (sleeved) type (see Figure 7). This type can be made from built up tubes as shown in Figure 7 or made from a single piece of board, par

、tially serrated at one point and with a string inserted under a label at this point. By pulling the string, the composite container can be broken in two and opened without any risk to the contents. A reclosable composite container can also be made from a single piece of board or laminate with a simi

、lar string opening device under the label. h) Mastic cartridges (see Figure 8). This specialized type has a spout assembly seamed on one end. The spout assembly normally consists of three parts, i.e. a specially designed tinplate end into which is fitted a plastic spout (open or closed end) the insi

、de of which is sealed with a foil diaphragm. After filling by the packer a tinplate or plastic plunger is incorporated in the open end. Composite containers of cross section other than circular, i.e. rectangular, square, triangular and other shapes, are obtainable in the majority of the basic types

、illustrated. There are many variations of these basic types with different dispensing devices such as sprinkler perforations, hinged closing spouts, plugs and so on. Various kinds of puffer composites are also available for dispensing insecticide and other powders. 5 Dimensions Composite containers

、of circular cross section are generally available in diameters from 19 mm to 203 mm. Rectangular composite containers are manufactured with diagonal measurements between corners of from 25 mm to 203 mm. The height of composite containers does not normally exceed 390 mm. Unless otherwise specified th

、e dimensions of composite containers are quoted in relation to the internal cross section and external height. The capacity is usually stated separately. Plastics and metal lids may also be embossed. Overall labelling of the sidewa

、lls may be carried out using either a gang label (see clause 2), or a spiral label applied from a reel during the spiral winding operation. 7 Typical uses Composite containers are suitable for a variety of uses where a rigid pack is required for contents up to a maximum mass of approximately 6 kg. I

、tems packed range from powdered, granular, paste and semi-liquid products such as scouring powders, fertilizers, lubricating oils, dry and frozen foods to items as varied as tennis balls, shuttlecocks, decorative maps and scrolls and bottles of spirits where the composite container can provide appro
