It supersedes BS 6034:1990, which is withdrawn. The reason for the publication of

、this British Standard is the increasing use of non-verbal presentation of information in buildings and other places, and for services, used by the public. The use of graphical symbols is important to assist understanding by all, including those whose first language is not English and those who have

、disabilities. This British Standard is related to ISO 7001:1990 but is not equivalent in technical content. This British Standard differs from ISO 7001 in two main ways. Firstly, it is more comprehensive and contains a much greater number of graphical symbols. Secondly, it is the image that is stand

、ardized instead of the written description. Proposals for symbols for consideration for inclusion in a future edition of this standard should be submitted to the Secretary of Subcommittee PH/8/2 at BSI, 389 Chiswick High Road, London W4 4AL. This publication does not purport to include all the neces

、sary provisions of a contract. Users are responsible for its correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. 17、itish Standard presents a compilation of public information symbols and gives recommendations for their use. NOTE 1For the convenience of users, the graphical symbols have been grouped according to the areas where they are normally expected to be used. However, these groupings are not intended to be

、 exclusive and use of the graphical symbols in other areas, where this is considered appropriate, is not precluded. This standard is not applicable to safety signs, including fire safety signs, or to traffic signs for use on the public highway which are governed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and

、General Directions 1994 1 or specially authorized by the Secretary of State under Section 64 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 2. NOTE 2Safety signs, including fire safety signs, are covered by BS 5499. Water safety signs are covered by BS 5499-11. 2 Terms and definitions For the purposes of t

、his British Standard the following terms and definitions apply. 2.1 graphical symbol visually perceptible figure with a particular meaning used to transmit information independently of language NOTEIt may be produced by drawing, printing or other means. 2.2 public information symbol graphical symbol

、 intended to give information to the general public, the understanding of which is independent of specialist or occupational training 2.3 negation indication of the absence or opposite of something actual or positive 2.4 negation element element of a graphical symbol intended to negate the original

、intended message given by the symbol 3 General 3.1 Size The public information symbols given in this standard are designed to be reproduced in a variety of sizes to suit different applications from, for example, small-scale orientation notices to large-scale wayfinding signs. For the convenience of

、the user of the standard, a smaller version of each symbol is given. 3.2 Text The graphical symbols have been designed with the intention that they can be used on their own to convey the information described in the meaning (except the direction arrow, symbol number 4119, which cannot be used on its

、 own, see 3.3). However, they may be combined with the relevant text on a sign or notice etc., if considered appropriate. This might be an advantage with less well established symbols to aid understanding. BSI 2007 Licensed Copy: London South Bank University, London South Bank University, Thu Mar 01

、 06:25:37 GMT+00:00 2007, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 8501:2002 2 3.3 Arrows The direction arrow (symbol number 4119) should only be used in conjunction with another symbol (or a symbol and text) to indicate movement towards an object. An example is shown in Figure 1. Figure 1 Use of the direction

、00 2007, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 8501:2002 4 3.4 Colour and contrast With the exception of the countryside waymarking arrows (symbol numbers 4201, 4202 and 4203), the public information symbols given in this standard may be reproduced in any colour. However, the safety colours specified in BS

、5378-2 should be avoided to ensure there is no confusion between public information symbols and safety signs and symbols. Adequate contrast between the symbol and its background is essential and the symbol should be given a sufficiently large surrounding area to ensure readability. Guidance on the u

、se of colour and contrast is given in the Sign design guide 3. The illustrations given in Clause 4 to Clause 9 show the graphical symbols in squares to give an indication of the minimum area required. 3.5 Negation Public information symbols may be negated for comfort or convenience reasons. In order

、 to ensure that there is no confusion with safety signs, the negation element should be a diagonal bar running from top left to bottom right without a surrounding circle. An example is shown in Figure 3. The diagonal bar should always be placed over the symbol and should normally be red. Figure 3 Ex

、 with the guidance given in ISO/TR 7239. In graphical symbols for activities involving an action by a person, a standardized representation of the human figure has been used as shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5. 36、ons have been used, as illustrated in Figure 6 and Figure 7. NOTEThe surface of water is normally represented by two wavy lines. 37、South Bank University, Thu Mar 01 06:25:37 GMT+00:00 2007, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 8501:2002 7 Other standardized features include the use of a pound sign “” to indicate for hire, the use of an upper case “P” to indicate parking, and standardized representations of cycles, cars, buses, horsesh

、oes, dogs, water supply and baggage. 3.7 Additions to the standard Any future designs of symbols for possible inclusion in future editions of this standard should be in accordance with the design principles given in this standard and should be submitted to BSI for approval and standardization (see f

、oreword). Where an element conveying a particular meaning is given in this standard (see, for example, Figure 6 and Figure 7) that element should be used. A new symbol should not be designed for an existing meaning. Conversely, an existing symbol should not be used for a new meaning. 3.8 Variations

、The public information symbols given in this standard should be reproduced as published in the standard and should not normally be altered. However, minor variations for cultural or other reasons may be made providing they do not compromise the key elements and design intent of the standardized symb
