This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of

、 an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by September 1997, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by September 1997. This standard is one of a series of standards for tests on tile adhesives including: EN 1308Adhesives for tiles Determination of slip EN 1322A

、 3 EN 12003 : 1997 BSI 1998 1 Scope This European Standard specifies the test method to be used to determine the shear adhesion strength of reaction resin ceramic tile adhesives. This standard is applicable to all reaction resin ceramic tile adhesives for internal and external tile installations on

、floors and walls. This European Standard does not contain performance requirements or recommendations for the design and installation of ceramic tiles. NOTE. Ceramic tile adhesives can also be used for other kinds of tiles (natural and agglomerated stones, etc.), where these do not adversely affect

、the stones. 2 Normative references This European Standard incorporates, by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. These references are cited at the appropriate places in the text and the publications are listed hereafter. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or re

、visions of any of these publications apply to this European Standard only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references the latest edition of the publication referred to applies. EN 176Dust-pressed ceramic tiles with low water absorption (E # 3 %) Group BI EN 1322Adhesives

、05) % R.H. and an air velocity in the working area of less than 0,2 m/s. 5 Test materials Condition all test materials for at least 24 h under standard conditions. The adhesive to be tested shall be within its shelf life, where this is specified. 5.1 Ceramic tiles The tiles shall be clean and dry. T

、he tiles used for this method shall be of the following type: type V2: fully vitrified tiles in accordance with EN 176, of water absorption (E) # 0,2 % by mass, unglazed with plane adhering surface with facial dimensions of (1001) mm 3 (1001) mm. 6 Apparatus 6.1 Template The template shall be of pol

、ytetrafluoroethylene and shall conform to the measurements shown in figure 1. 6.2 Spacers Spacer rods shall have a diameter of (0,80,1) mm and a length of approximately 40 mm. 6.3 Weight A weight of cross-section (973) mm 3 (973) mm capable of exerting a force of (700,15) N. 6.4 Test machine A test

、machine with suitable capacity and sensitivity for the test and with a variable testing speed. The machine shall be capable of applying the load to the tile through a suitable jig (see 6.5). 6.5 Shear test jig Any suitable jig used to transfer into shear from the compression or tensile load exerted

、by the testing machine. Examples of suitable jigs are shown in figure 2 and figure 3. 36、03 : 1997 BSI 1998 7 Test method 7.1 Mixing of adhesive Mix the adhesive in accordance with the adhesive manufacturers instructions. 7.2 Preparation of test pieces The test pieces shall be prepared with type V2 tiles. Draw a straight line on one tile 6 mm from the tile edge (to serve as a guide in o

、verlapping the tiles as explained below). Place the template (see 6.1) over the back of the standard test tile. Trowel sufficient adhesive across the template and then screed clean so as to neatly and completely fill the holes in the template. Carefully remove the template vertically. Insert spacer

、rods 0,8 mm thick (see 6.2) at each corner of the tile, approximately 20 mm into the test specimen. After 2 min place a second standard test tile over the coated tile, offset to provide an overlap between tiles of 6 mm, using the previously scribed line as a guide and ensuring that the edges of the

、tiles are parallel. Place the test pieces on a plane surface and carefully load with (700,15) N for 3 min. Carefully remove the spacer rods, without disturbing the relative position of the tiles in the test pieces. A total of ten test pieces is required per conditioning. Condition the test pieces in

、 the standard test conditions for seven days and then according to the test requirements. 7.3 Initial adhesion strength Place the test pieces in the shear test jig (see 6.5) and apply a shear force by moving the crosshead at a speed of 5 mm/min until failure occurs. Report the results in newtons. 7.

、4 Adhesion strength after water immersion Immerse the ten test pieces in water at (232) C for 21 days. Remove the test pieces, wipe with a cloth and test them as described in 7.3. Report the results in newtons. 7.5 Adhesion strength after thermal shock Place the ten test pieces in a water bath maint

、ained at (232) C for 30 min and then in a 100 C waterbath for a further 30 min. Repeat the cycle a total of four times and then place the test pieces in the (232) C bath for approximately 30 min for cooling. Remove each test piece from the water, wipe off the excess water and test as described in 7.

、3. Report the results in newtons. 8 Evaluation and expression of results Divide the individual values, in newtons, by the conventional area (1660 mm2) of adhesive contact. Determine the shear adhesion strength in the following way: determine the mean of ten values; discard the values falling outside

、 the range of 20 % from the mean value; if five or more values remain, determine the new mean value; if less than five values remain, repeat the test. 9 Test report The test report shall provide the following information: a) the name, number and issue of this European Standard; b) the place, date an

、d time of sampling; c) type of adhesive, commercial designation and manufacturer; d) identification of test sample; e) handling and storage of samples before testing; f) test conditions; g) date of test; h) test results (individual and mean values and the mode of failure); i) shear adhesion strength

、 for each condition in N/mm2; j) any other factor that could have affected the result.
