、 BSI EN 13677-1:2003 (E) 3 Foreword This document (EN 13677-1:2003) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 249 “Plastics“, the secretariat of which is held by IBN. This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endor

、sement, at the latest by August 2003, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by August 2003. EN 13677 consists of the following parts, under the general title, Reinforced thermoplastic moulding compounds Specification for GMT. Part 1: Designation Part 2: Methods of test

、and general requirements Part 3: Specific requirements According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standards organizations of the following countries are bound to implement this European Standard: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungar

、ard establishes a data-block system for the designation of glass mat reinforced thermoplastic sheet (GMT) using a format and coding system established by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) which is common to most fibre reinforced thermoset and thermoplastic moulding materials. The system

、 is intended to be applied only to materials ready for commercial use. The designation system is based on the premise that thermosets and long fibre reinforced thermo-plastics can be divided into generic families using basic polymers, values of selected designatory properties and additional qualitat

、ive information in order to describe a particular material as precisely as desired. The system is intended for the designation of a single material (or a small group of similar materials) within a generic family. It is not intended to specify by this system the chemical composition or the volumetric

、 recipe of the compound but to designate the material for identification purposes. It is the responsibility of the producer of the compound material to provide the appropriate designation. The data-block system is also the basis for specification given in Parts 2 and 3 of this standard. Licensed Cop

The types of thermoplastic composite sh

、eets are differentiated from each other by a classification system based on information about basic polymer parameters, fillers/reinforcement content and type, intended method of processing and/or manufacturing, specific characteristics and designatory properties. This European Standard is applicabl

、e to glass fibre mat reinforced polypropylene sheet materials only. It applies to materials ready for commercial use in the form of flat sheet or coil. This European Standard does not apply to: thermoplastic sheet moulding materials where the polymer is other than polypropylene or polypropylene allo

、y or a blend ; the reinforcement is other than glass fibre. It is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation give necessarily the same performance. This European Standard does not provide engineering data, performance data or data on processing conditions which may be required

、to specify a material for a particular application and/or method of processing. If such additional properties are required, when ever possible, they shall be determined in accordance with the test methods specified in Part 2 of this European Standard. Whenever technical properties required in the Pa

、rt 3 of this standard need to be indicated, this data block system is also the basis for it. To ensure that the meanings of codes remain unambiguous and to avoid conflicts within the system, codes and abbreviations have been co-ordinated within the relevant ISO technical sub-committees. 2 Normative

These normative references are cited at the appropriate places in the text, and the publications are listed hereafter. For dated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any

、 Designation system 3.1 General This designation system for thermoplastic sheet moulding compound is based on the following standardised pattern : Designation Description block (optional) Identity block European Standard Individual item block Number block Data block 1 Data block 2 Data block 3 Data

、block 4 Data block 5 The designation consists of an optional description block, reading “GMT“ and an identity block comprising the European Standard number and an individual-item block. For unambiguous coding, the individual-item block is subdivided into 5 data blocks comprising the following inform

、ation: the first character of the individual item block shall be a hyphen. The data blocks shall be separated from each other by commas; if a data block is not used, this shall be indicated by “X“ (=no indication) but only if another block follows; for labelling purposes and if no other blocks follo

、w the comma between block 1 and 2 can be omitted; the procedures for the selection and preparation of test specimens and the methods of test to determine the designatory properties are given in Part 2 of the standard. The designatory mechanical properties are determined from test specimens taken fro

、m moulded test plaques and not from the “as made“ GMT sheet. Data block 1 : Identification of the basic polymer or compositions by its symbol in accordance with EN ISO 1043-1. Data block 2 : Designatory reinforcing materials or fillers, its physical nature and form and if required combinations as we

、 Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI EN 13677-1:2003 (E) 7 3.2 Data block 1 In this data block, after the hyphen, polypropylene is identified by the symbol (PP), in accordance with EN ISO 1043-1. If designation of the different polymer variants is required, it shall be shown by a hyphen after the (PP) follow

、ed by one letter, coding the additional information about the polymer as specified in Table 1. Mixtures and modifications shall be coded in accordance with EN ISO 1043-1:2001 sub-clause 4 to 6. 3.3 Data block 2 The information in data block 2 shall be restricted to designatory fillers/reinforcement

、of the material in question. In this data block, the type of filler and/or reinforcing material, is represented by a code (letter and number) in position 1 and its physical form by a second code (letter and number) in position 2, according to EN ISO 1043-2. Subsequently (without a space), the mass c

、ontent is given by a two-figure number in position 3. The codes for the mass content are specified in Table 2. Note, in particular, the following : the codes have different meanings when used in position 1 or 2 ; whenever information needs to be indicated only in position 2 a “X“ (=no indication) is

、 required in Position 1. The letters in Table 2 are part of EN ISO 1043-2. Those letters combined with a number are additional and introduced to meet the special requirements of these materials (see sub-clause 1.6). Mixtures of materials and/or forms may be indicated by combining the relevant codes

、using the sign “+“ and placing the whole between parenthesis. For example a mixture of 20 % glass fibres (GF) and 20 % mineral dust (MD) would be indicated by (GF20+MD20) or (GF+MD)40.
